Synopsis

Speed Racer
The Matrix masterminds Andy and Larry Wachowski usher anime icon Tatsuo Yoshida's classic 1960s-era hit into the new millennium with this family-friendly story of a young racecar driver who takes on the mysterious Racer X in a custom-made, gadget-loaded speed machine named the Mach 5. Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is the kind of driver that every wheelman wishes he could be: a born winner whose unbeatable combination of aggression, instinct, and fearlessness always finds him crossing the checkered flag with a comfortable lead. In Speed Racer's mind, the only driver who could present him with any real challenge is his late brother -- the legendary Rex Racer. Rex died in a heated cross-country rally known as The Crucible many years ago, and now his younger sibling is driven to fulfill the legacy that Rex left behind. To this day, Speed Racer is fiercely loyal to family. It was Speed Racer's father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), who designed the unbeatable Mach 5, and even a lucrative offer from racing giants Royalton Industries isn't enough to get the young ace to break his family ties. Upon turning down Royalton's (Roger Allam) astronomical offer, Speed Racer makes the shocking discovery that the outcomes of the biggest races are being predetermined by a handful of powerful moguls who pad their profits by manipulating the drivers. Realizing that his career would be ruined if word of the fix gets out, Royalton vows that the Mach 5 will never make it to another finish line. Now, the only way for Speed Racer to save the family business and beat Royalton at his own game will be to win the very same race that claimed his brother's life so many years ago. In order to accomplish that formidable feat, however, Speed Racer will not only have to rely on his family and the aid of his longtime girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), but form a tenuous alliance with his longtime rival -- the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) -- as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

    Awesome Family Movie

This was a fantastic movie - and superbly filmed. Technologically everything you would expect from the W-brothers. I think this movie suffered in the theater for two reasons - one, it followed Iron Man out, but more impoortantly I think people expected a dark, twisted adventure like the Matrix. Anyone familiar with the old cartoon should know t that this simply wouldn't have been true to the original. IF you were a fan of the old saturday morning show, this was absolutely spot-ON! So many nuances I had forgotten. Most surprising was how they took a part of the plot (which I will omit so as not to spoil anything for younger fans) and turned it into a great father/son family message. Pops learns a hard lesson and the movie goes out of its way to drive that message home. I took my teenage daughter to this - she having never seen a SR cartoon, and I a long time fan...we both LOVED this movie. It's a roller coaster, with a light plot that demands you check your high-brow expectations at the opening credits...this is a good old fashioned summer fun movie.....oh, with unbelievable special effects. Enjoy this movie!

    Great Movie

There are many reviews on here bashing this movie's plot. For a movie originating from a Japanese cartoon, I think the movie plot is very adequate, and is not any worse than a movie like Transformers (also based off of a Japanese cartoon). The acting was also clearly altered to give the cartoony and overall feel of the original cartoon, so please refrain from using that as a con. Overall, I loved the movie... especially the great looking effects in the races. I thought it was very successful, and I wish that all of the movies based off of cartoons and video games were this good (Final Fantasy: Spirits Within being one of the poorer transitions). The comments were witty and humorous, and the overall dialogue of the movie was enjoyable. Great movie!

Caution: there is usually a lot of color and action in every scene, so it may seem overwhelming if you don't like so much happening. However, all of the scenes are a lot of fun! I never read/watched the original series, so I have no idea how close it is, but the modern spin makes an interesting story line that is ultimately a 'good guys win' and 'family and friendship conquer all' type message. All of the characters were well cast, making you dislike the bad guys, root for the good guys, and want to watch the movie again and again!

in most likelihood, you just purchased either an HDTV or a blu-ray player and you can't think of a movie to get to really enjoy your new hidef experience. this movie is made to be watched on Blu-Ray...the colors, the clarity, the special effects...it all makes for a very enjoyable experience. personally i did not find this as boring as others did...but i try not to be overly critical... its a movie everyone in the family can enjoy .. and it will make you proud of your new purchase.

I'm most often a very harsh critic, especially on plot, but when I stood up from the movie, I was absolutely stunned. I had never seen the cartoon; I had barely even heard of it. Yet the movie had a perfect mix of quick, witty, entertaining scenes, and a strong overall plot that pulls together very well. Add that to the amazingly well crafted effects during the intense racing scenes, and you have a phenomenal film.

Speed Racer is a fun, colorful and easy to watch movie that really shows off what home HD can do. The story is simple and often silly and the action is all very stylized but the vibrant colors and bold presentation make it a blast to watch. Of course, if you're not a fan of the style then you're going to struggle through the slightly overlong runtime and occasionally long-winded exposition.

This is a movie you will definitely want to have in your collection. It is kid and adult oriented. It does contains some bad words but is not littered with them. It is funny, has lots of action, and good actors. My wife, son and I all enjoyed the movie. My favorite parts of the movie were the video and surround sound. This movie is excellent at both. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

The Wachowski brothers manage to blow your mind away with amazing cinematography. A great deal of care went into preserving the Speed Racer elements in the film. If you are a Speed Racer cartoon fan you will not be disappointed. However, this becomes the movie major flaw. Too much is invested in the source material that the movie itself is not interesting.
