Stunning! Absolutely Stunning Video! I never thought in a million years that these old TV episodes would reveal so much detail. This is a must have set for any SciFi Fan! This Set has it all... High definition Video.. DTS Master Audio 7.1 Sound.. BD Live extras... Navigation thru the discs is really a cool task, showing up on the Enterprise screen, with some really neat graphics and sounds. The Video uses VC-1 Compression and the colors are vibrant and detail is crisp, while preserving the 4:3 original ratio. Audio is presented in 7.1 DTS Master Audio and will thrill the listener, with a superb balance, incorporating use of discrete effects with maximum results. The Intro theme with the Enterprise whisking by will leave you in goose bumps, overall the Sound has been scrubbed and perfected into an amazing soundtrack! Some of the Special effects in the original series are quite dated and Blu-Ray exploits the old technology, so included in this set is the capability to toggle to more modern cut scenes showing the planets and the orbiting Enterprise. Purist's will appreciate this capability.. I really have to convey to any Star Trek TOS fan, that this 1st season on Blu-ray is essential, it will make you feel like you are watching the series for the first time, with its beautiful 1080P high definition picture and 7.1 DTS MA sound track will leave you with a huge smile! I love this first set and will purchase the other 4 seasons with relish!

Watch Star Trek: The Original Series as it was meant to be. The new special effects really enchance the episodes. Instead of being distracted by the original limited special effects; the new special effects create a even flow throughout each episode and help enhance the story of each episode. The new special effects are great and are really exciting to watch. The drawback to this set is that it's in HD DVD. It seems like the DVD industry is going to Blue Ray, so in a few years it may be hard to find a HD DVD player to play this set. The other side of each disk plays on a regular DVD player. Each side of each disk plays the same episodes, but there are some special features that are only with HD DVD side and some with the regular DVD. The special features are NOT on one disk by itself, instead the special features are spread thoughout the set with some of the episodes. Also, some of the special features are out of date. They have a special features on both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, but both interviews were done in December 2003. I do believe that these special features were offered in the Regular Star Trek: TOS DVD set released in few years ago. It would have been nice to hear their opinions on the updates concerning the special effects. Overall, I would recommend on buying this set. Each episode is complete, not like the edited versions you see on television. The special effects are excellent. Maybe in a few years there will a DVD Player that can play both Blue Ray and HD DVD DVD's.

Pros: Transfer to Blu-ray makes it look better than ever; the DTS HD 7.1 surround sound adds nice "punch". Original mono is available as well. Hey, it is "Star Trek: The Original Series, Season 1"! Cons: Mostly minor: special effects not as "special" now, but, good for the time. The transfer of this series to Blu-ray has resulted in it being and looking better than it was when it was first shown on NBC back in the '60s(I am old enough to remember watching it then). While the special effects may not hold up to today's standards; they were pretty good for a rather unsophisticated audience. It was the story/plot that was the important part of the show. The late Gene Roddenberry used his show to talk about the issues of the day(which a lot of good and bad science fiction has done for over a century); and used the show to good advantage. The special features consist of a feature going over the re-mastering the video and audio of "Star Trek(all three seasons)"; "All Access(PIP interviews and commentary, etc.)", the home movies by Billy Blackburn, various 'Easter Eggs', interviews and profiles; these all help fill out what made ST:TOS work. Highly recommended!!

Considering the costs and various incarnations that Star Trek: TOS has gone through in last several years, this latest release of blu-ray discs will not disappoint, as digital technology has substantially catapulted the 60's iconic tv show into the current mainstream of realism - and in a format that appears to have some staying power. There's also an option to view the episodes in its original & modest special effects mode, preserving the old school ways for certain purists of the series. If you are a die-hard Trekkie, this is the evasive piece of sci-fi nostalgia you have been waiting for during the last four decades. Every facial nuance, uniform fabric fiber, and ship corridor floor stain is revealed in excruciatingly vivid detail as only blu-ray can deliver. Another bonus is that each episode is complete, unlike the various edits and chops that go on when watching the series in syndication. It's like watching the series fresh all over again. Plus, it's a bonus that Best Buy had a great sale on all three of the seasons. Live Long & Prosper. ;)

Star Trek TOS The Way it was ment to be seen

I reluctantly went along and bought the Blu Ray collection since I already owned the 2004 complete series and I could not believe that the source tapes from over 40 years ago could have been polished enough to warrant spending more , that’s why I said reluctant . I started out with The Menagerie since The Cage was NOT on this set . This is a typo on the Best Buy site and for all you non Trekkies out there the biggest difference in the both these films is the costumes were not perfected and some of the crew members were slightly different as Majel Barrett and Leonard Nimoy swapped roles. Beside this small flaw that Paramount decided not to add, there is a minimal amount of graininess at times which is for forgivable , again coming from source tapes over 40 years ago. For anyone out there that may doubt spending the money if you have all the DVDs already all I can say is you have to see this with your own eyes.

I love the original stories so I am pleased that all they have done is inhans the picture and plug in some shots of the ship were it makes sents to. Rather then pulling seines out like I have seen them do lately to make the show shorter and the commercial time longer. I think they would do good to leave the episodes alone as they are from this point on. If Mr.Roddenberry didn't think those seines needed to be in the show he would not have used them. So I am glad that in this release that they simply made a good thing better and left the storie itself alone. However on the disappointed side: The Episodes are recorded in origanal airing date and not in created sequence. Also the discs them selves are not laibuled as to which dics has which episodes. They also leave out the origianal pilate: The Cage In conclusion: a nice set over all but could use work I would like to see it rereleasted in order of created sequents and include the original pilate.

Great product - highly recommend for anyone who enjoys the Original Series. It brings a welcome newness to Star Trek. I've watched the original series episodes so many times I can't count, but now the blu ray version makes it all new and exciting again - especially the new cutscenes. You can easily see it's CGI, but they are way better than the original cutscenes. Got this on sale, so saved a lot of money. However, arrived with a severely damaged case. Had to return to Best Buy store. Store didn't have blu ray in stock, so had to re-order online again. Was backordered, so I'm still waiting for the replacement two weeks later. Best Buy had terrible packaging - very flimsy and little padding.

Overall its great seeing Star Trek on Blue Ray! One of the disappointments I have, other than the episode 'The Cage' not being on this set (as Best Buy states), is...has anyone noticed that the episodes are not in there correct order? For example: on Disc 2 episode 6 'Mudd's Women' is Stardate 1329.1, which would really make it episode 2 (if not counting 'The Cage'). But on Disc 1, the very first episode on it is Stardate 1513.1 which would really make it Episode 4 or so. And this goes on throughout the whole set. Otherwise, I am really glad I held out to buy this on Blue Ray, and definitaly worth the price!
