    Synopsis

    Strategic Air Command
Inspired in part by the true story of baseball great Ted Williams, who after serving in World War II was drafted to serve in the Korean War just as his baseball career was taking off, Strategic Air Command stars James Stewart as "Dutch" Holland, a star third baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals. "Dutch" served with distinction as a fighter pilot during World War II, and as the Air Force adds new B-36 and B-47 jets to their arsenal, they need experienced men to fly these new weapons in our atomic deterrent force, and Holland is called back to duty. He's not terribly happy about this development: he loves baseball, his team is doing well, and his wife Sally (June Allyson) is expecting a baby. But you can't fight Uncle Sam, and Holland becomes a reluctant but proud member of the S.A.C., where he and his fellow pilots man the jets that will be our first line of defense should the cold war turn hot. While Strategic Air Command's story hasn't dated well (and for a military drama, there's surprisingly little action), James Stewart and June Allyson make the most of their material, and the aerial footage remains impressive. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Olive produced this Blu Ray. Their earlier track record for BD transfer were once hit or miss. But that's been rapidly changing with their newer titles. Make no mistake, this review is not about the film's plot. This review is strictly about the quality of the picture. VistaVision can be a jaw-dropping experience if restored or transferred properly to a Blu Ray Disc. And this one delivers. It's not just VistaVision, its also in Technicolor, as well. A format long gone, but perfectly replicated and represented for your home screen. If done right, it can be a real treat. And this BD from Olive scores a Home-Run.

This is the second movie I've seen with Allyson and Stewart as leading couple and honestly the second best. The aerial photography is superb and all, but the home scenes are stilted and conventional. Ultimately it's yet another worried wife of a hero at home narrative. The release is average at best. No special features except for the trailer. But I will give it 3 for an excellent transfer.

I watched this movie the first time with my father. Originally I didn't realize it was based upon the life of a real baseball player. I think that is neat. It is interesting to see what kinds of things that the people in SAC endured to keep our country safe. Great old movie to watch and enjoyable!

I would rate this movie 3 stars out of 4 with Jimmy bumping it up from 2/12. He is excellent as usual & the flying scenes are terrific. The picture drags when it is on the ground. Not one of Stewart's or Anthony Mann's better efforts but still worthwhile.

Great acting & story line depicting a great Drama of SAC protecting our country. The long hours , physical exhaustion, elements, & lovers quarrels arising from training for what we all hope will never happen!
