Stripes [Extended Cut] [DVD] [1981]

After almost 15 years comes Stripes: The Extended Cut, featuring 18 minutes of deleted scenes long thought to be extinct in the Salt Mine archives of good old Hollywood. Columbia Home Entertainment presents Ivan Reitman's hilarious military comedy that boosted enlistments and provided Bill Murray with an early hit under his belt around the time of his SNL years. The movie itself has been given a needed face-lift, with an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen transfer and a high-definition 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack that is a step and a half up from the shoddy presentations of old. With the option of watching the theatrical cut or the extended cut, with onscreen pop-ups that signal each cut scene, the DVD goes a long way to present both versions in all their glory. Six deleted scenes are presented, including the infamous seven-minute Columbian airdrop scene along with another racy scene with Murray and none other than late-'70s/early-'80s heartthrob P.J. Soles. While most of the scenes are arguably unnecessary, it's good to see that they're all quite funny and work in and out of the finished film. Extra care was obviously put into them, with Reitman himself tackling a few scenes again in the editing room just to make sure the right takes and comedic rhythms were worked out this time. Those stories and many others are vividly told both in the fun commentary with the director and writer/producer Dan Goldberg and the hour-long documentary that's culled from interviews with much of the main cast, including Judge Reinhold and a bizarre black-lit interview with the usually reclusive Murray. With the original theatrical trailer rounding out the list of extras, the Stripes: Extended Cut DVD is a loving tribute to an '80s classic that has cemented its place in comedy history, and with this version, is now able to entertain in vastly new ways for the young and old alike.

    Synopsis

    Stripes
Bill Murray decides to be all that he can be -- and it ain't pretty -- in this hit comedy. John Winger (Murray) is a quick-witted but unambitious loser who comes home after getting fired to discover that his car has been repossessed and his girlfriend is leaving him. With no idea of what to do next, John and his best friend Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis) impulsively join the Army, more as a practical joke than a career goal. John and Russell find themselves in basic training under the hard-nosed and impatient Sgt. Hulka (Warren Oates), who is stuck with an outfit of goofballs, including overweight Ox (John Candy), naive Cruiser (John Deihl), perpetually stoned Elmo (Judge Reinhold), and the appropriately-nicknamed Psycho (Conrad Dunn). The platoon succeeds in impressing the generals spite of themselves, and John and Russell even find time to romance two pretty female MPs, Stella (P.J. Soles) and Louise (Sean Young). However, when John and Russell commandeer a high-tech military vehicle for a European weekend getaway with the girls, they happen into Soviet territory and stumble into an international incident. Remarkably, Stripes was made with the full cooperation of the U.S. Army, despite its less-than-rosy view of the all-volunteer armed forces. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I first saw this movie at the theater upon its release. For the most part it has aged well, some spots not so much. The main plus of this edition is the addition of 17 minutes of footage which makes it the definitive Version. Special Features include a commentary track and a two part documentary featuring interviews with the cast (including Bill Murray).. It's a real treat to see Murray, John Candy & Harold Ramis in their younger days and there are many laugh out loud moments. The Steeelbook itself has a very colorful, eye-catching look and is one of the Project Pop Art Limited edition series.

This movie is a classic. Heck, it's one of the ones that made me decide to join the military (others being Top Gun, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, Platoon, and of course watching Hogan's Heroes as a kid). You will be hard pressed to find any other movie with such suspense, intrigue, drama, oh and of course laugh till it hurts comedy. this is Bill "BFM" Murray at his all time best. Forget Caddy Shack and Ghostbusters, this is what a legend looks like. If you have never seen this movie, go watch it right now. If you have seen it, go watch it again. If you are watching it right now, stop it, rewind, and watch it from the beginning. It's that d@mn good.

If you haven't seen "Stripes" then you don't know what you have been missing. This is Bill Murray and Harold Ramis at the top of their game. Supporting players are (a very young) John Larroquette and John Candy. How can you go wrong. This version is to cash in on the steelbook craze, but it is inexpensive and the film is great so you really can't lose.

Stripes squanders at least an hour belaboring situations contradicted from the outset by Murray's personality. The premise and star remain out of whack until the rambling, diffuse screenplay finally struggles beyond basic training.Stripes will keep potential felons off the streets for two hours. Few people seem to be asking, these days, that movies do more.

another great Ivan Reitman comedy. One of Bill Murray's best roles. Great Cast. This blu-ray has the extended cut which runs about 19 minutes longer than the original cut. Just a great comedy, with great directing and very good supporting cast. Blu-ray is better than the previous DVD release in video and audio, but not the best transfer.

Stripes is a hilarious film, but I'm a little disappointed that this steelbook only contains the extended version of the film, the theatrical version is not included. I was aware when I purchased it because I wanted the movie in HD, still I feel it was a mistake not to let one choose between the two cuts.

My review isnt of the movie because everyone knows its a Bill Murray classic. I am reviewing the steelbook and it is amazing. I like when Steelbook art is creative and not just generic shots from the movie. These pop art steelbooks are all amazingly creative.

Another classic that gets the Blu Ray treatment. Felt like I was watching it for the first time. You can even watch the extended cut of the movie with the additional scenes highlighted by a small star on the top corner of the image!
