The story of Alice in Wonderland receives a hyper-violent makeover in Watchmen and 300 director Zack Snyder's fantastical tale of a young psychiatric patient who escapes into a vivid world of fantasy after being committed to a mental hospital by her abusive stepfather. Set in the 1950s, Sucker Punch takes viewers on an incredible journey into the mind of Babydoll (Emily Browning), who finds herself at the mercy of her malevolent stepfather after her mother passes away. With no remaining family and no friends to turn to, her stepfather has her committed to a bleak mental hospital, where she is scheduled to receive a lobotomy in five days. As the procedure draws near, Babydoll creates a phantasmagorical alternate reality in which she must seek out five items in order to secure her freedom. Should she fail, her mind isn't the only thing she stands to lose. Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Carla Gugino, and Jon Hamm co-star in a film co-written by Snyder and Steve Shibuya.~Jason Buchanan
I had bought the extended cut Blu-ray when it first came out, but it got lost lending it out. When I saw a section of steelbooks at Best Buy this one was on sale and I was concerned that the packaging didn't say which version was in the box and showed the shorter running time. But, when I got it home it did have the same extended version and features I remember.
About the actual movie, there's are about four fantasy sequences that are really must see action music videos. Very visually interesting and worth seeing on their own. The overall plot concerns a young girl who comes from a tragic abusive event to be placed in a mental ward. She then envisions a world in which she is held prisoner and trained to dance like other girls at a seedy club. To escape from the events there she envisions that she and her fellow inmates are part of an elite fighting unit in fantastical settings with zombie soldiers, orcs & dragons, giant samauri, and robots mixing genres and war machines.
The points that were problematic for people I know were the varying levels of reality and some subject matter. If you followed Inception and didn't get bogged down with questions, you'll handle the transitions here fine.
The second issue is the dark tone of the "reality" bookends, and the dancing club plot which is the majority of the screentime. Neither an old style mental hospital or the club is a pleasant place for the girls. While most of that plays out like prison break movie with them planning and gathering materials to effect their escape, there's certainly many references to forced activity and some violent events shown. Keep in mind, it did get a PG-13 as most of the battles involve non-human enemies. It's very much in line with Zack Snyder's other movies 300 and Watchmen as far as content and shares some of the aspects of Shutter island. My girlfriend really liked it, possibly more than I did.
If you're not easily offended I'd recommend seeing it at least once. If you are easily offended, I still recommend skipping to the fantasy action sequences.
I saw this flim in theaters and was blown away by the action! Theres a scene where shes fighting Giant Samuri Warriors and she looks as if she was about to go Super Sayin! The movie can be confusing at times and you'll feel like your brain hurts when its all over but the second time you watch it'll all make sense (Yeah, its one of those). The Chicks are hot, the action never stops, and the soundtrack is awesome. Minus the fact that you'll probably have to watch this movie 2 times to understand it, its so good action wise you won't mind!
First, let me sum up what I'm going to say. I enjoyed this film every second. When this came out in the theaters, Just about every critic review trashed it. They made this movie seem like it was the worst piece of garbage ever...
I watched it today for myself, almost reluctantly. My first thought..."What were they thinking!" This film is very deep in a bit of a more subtle approach. The story is capable of moving you, and even tugging on some of those tears you might have a problem letting go of. That's not to say this movie does not have flaws.
It's almost like watching three movies all at once. About the first third of the film is like a music video. No real dialogue, just a moving narrative given to you by motion and sound. It then moves on to the story. The action sequences are well done, and over the top. So the film does jump from drama/action/scif... I admit it can be jarring if you weren't expecting it. But...when you realize *why* these events are seen this way, you'll likely be more on board.
Some of the acting may not be the absolute best, but they give you the emotion that you want. The main character doesn't say much at all, and most times it relies on the surrounding cast to push the story. But again, the plot sums that reasoning up for you.
Do not pass up on this film. Ignore the bad reviews you may have heard.. Any person in real live that I know has enjoyed this movie. SuckerPunch is just one of those films that you have to experience for yourself.
Thank you for reading the review, I hope it helped you one way or another. Enjoy the show.

A Zack Snyder gem
Owned for 8 months when reviewed.
Great movie one of Zach Snyder's lesser known gems
Saw this movie awhile ago and I won't go into what it's about in detail. You're better off checking out a movie review site for the full blown breakdown. For me, the movie was a good price and had some cool extras. Not much of a 'hard media' purchaser these days but this is one of the few I haven't found available on streaming services (Hulu, Netflix, Sony Crackle), hence, why I bought it.
It also includes an Ultraviolet digital copy where you can stream to your devices or download it for use later on. Looking for something with some drama, martial artsy, super hero-ish, dark humor and ultimately ending with sacrifice and inspiration. Pop this Blu-ray in for an alternate movie watching experience.
Yes, is not an Oscar winning-movie, but a movie made just for entertainment, and does that for me
The idea and history are quite interesting. I remember watching this movie several years ago, and I enjoyed... So why not having it in the bluray collection??
