Summertime [Criterion Collection] [DVD] [1955]

  • SKU: 7142996
  • Release Date: 09/09/1998
  • Rating: NR
A lonely spinster discovers the seemingly perfect romance she has longed for is marked by a cruel secret in this romantically bittersweet addition to The Criterion Collection. Presented in 1.33:1 full-screen pan-and-scan only and accompanied by an English Dolby Digital Mono audio track, aside from the inclusion of a theatrical trailer this release is curiously lacking in the usual abundant extra features that have made The Criterion Collection one of the most respected DVD-releasing companies among film enthusiasts. Extra features are limited to a theatrical trailer.

    Synopsis

    Summertime
Katharine Hepburn stars as Jane Hudson, an Ohio secretary on the verge of spinsterhood. Carefully saving her money, Jane takes an extended trip to Venice, half hoping to find the romance that has always eluded her. Luck of luck, she meets handsome Renato Di Rossi (Rossano Brazzi), who sweeps her off her feet. Jane's flight on Cloud Nine comes to a flaming crash when she learns that Renato is married and the father of a large family. Picking herself up and dusting herself off, Jane is determined to keep her romance alive, and hang the consequences. She ultimately does what's best for everyone, and heads back to Ohio, wistfully clutching to the memory of the happiest summer of life. Gorgeously color-photographed on location by Jack Hildyard, Summertime was an adaptation of (and vast improvement upon) Arthur Laurents' play The Time of the Cuckoo. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

      Best Hepburn movie!

Hepburn is achingly vulnerable in her role as a "spinster" in her 50's, longing for love and romance on her solo European tour. The storyline might seem a bit outdated by modern standards, but most people can relate to loneliness and Jane Hudson is lonely. A "glorified secretary" (her description) from Akron, Ohio, she yearns for a romantic adventure during her stay in the most romantic of cities, the incomparable Venice, which she gets - with a twist. It is that twist and how the film addresses it that makes this movie very much ahead of its time. David Lean's direction is masterful, and Venice never looked lovelier - a must see, whether one is a Hepburn fan or not. I'm not a fan of some of her film portrayals, but this one is, I believe, her best.

The Golden Hollywood movie "Summertime" is magic, with the impeccable actors Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi. A definite must see movie, one that the whole family will enjoy. Beautiful scenery, amazing acting, wonderful story... You can't get any better than 1950's Hollywood.
