Synopsis

Sunshine
As the sun begins to dim along with humankind's hope for the future, it's up to a desperate crew of eight astronauts to reach the dying star and reignite the fire that will bring life back to planet Earth in this tense psychological sci-fi thriller that re-teams 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle with writer Alex Garland and producer Andrew Macdonald. The skies are darkening, and the outlook for planet Earth is grim. Though the encroaching darkness at first seems unstoppable, scientists have concocted one desperate last-ditch plan to buy the human race a temporary reprieve from the grim future that looms just past the horizon. A crew of eight men and women has been given a nuclear device designed to literally reignite the sun and sent hurtling through infinity on the most crucial space mission ever attempted. Suddenly, as the crew loses radio contact with mission control, everything begins to fall apart. Now, in the farthest reaches of the galaxy, the men and women who may hold the key to ultimate survival find themselves not only struggling for their lives, but their sanity as well. Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy, and Michelle Yeoh star in a film that asks audiences just what would become of humankind if the sky suddenly went black. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

    Simply, Amazing

Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008. Ground breaking director Danny Boyle has done it again with sci-fi action-adventure film "Sunshine." It is something you have never seen before. The film takes place in 2057. The sun is dying and mankind faces extinction. The Earth's last hope lies in the hands of the crew on Icarus II. Attempting to fly to the sun and launch a massive nuclear weapon into it to ignite the fading star. Out of the radio contact with Earth, the mission begins to unravel and they find themselves fighting for their lives and the future of us all. Fans of other Danny Boyle's films will not be disappointed. His fantastic films include; 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Transpotting, The Beach and Shallow Grave. The films delivers in every aspect. Unfortunately, the advertising campaign wasn't very strong for this round of Danny Boyle's film. And "Sunshine" only played in about 4000 screens. I luckily, found this on playing in a theatre near me when it was released in July 2007 and fell in love with it. Overall "Sunshine" was a great, great, sci-fi film that would be shown to anyone who enjoys a good movie. I wish the advertising campaign would have been better because this is one film that should not be missed. Film itself: ***** "Sunshine" uses a 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 which is a great choice for the Fox Classic. This film has great visuals, mainly scenes in outer space. Without giving too much away, the last 20 minutes of the film are amazingly done and the visuals should be nominated for an Academy Award. The transfer to Blu-ray is very well done. When I saw it in the theatre, I was worried about some of the segments of the film because they are darker and could cause the screen to be grainy. But Fox pulled through and did a great job in transferring all the great visuals that I saw in July onto my HD TV at home. Video: ***** "Sunshine" uses English DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit) audio format. It is an excellent choice and again, Fox pulled through. The audio on this film alone is Oscar worthy. The films soundtrack, soon to be released, is done by John Murphy in an amazing way. Each scene in this film is memorable with the help to John Murphy's soundtrack (OST). The Blu-ray transfer is great. The disc also features French Dolby Digital 5.1 and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound which are a little disappointing but didn't affect the overall outcome of the disc. I would have liked to see the same DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 in the French and Spanish languages. But overall, the audio delivers past my expectations and I still plan on purchasing the "Sunshine" OST when it is released. Audio: ***** "Sunshine" features a new Profile, called Profile 1.1 which is newly released in 2008. The Profile 1.1 allows you to view the film in PiP. The smaller screen being the director commentaries and the main screen being the actual movie. The PiP option allows you to switch back and forth between the screens without pausing the movie. Fortunately, Sony updated their PlayStation 3 to enable this option a few weeks ago. It works beyond imaginable and I really think that this will leave HD-DVD in the dust. The Blu-ray disc also features an Audio commentary with the Director Danny Boyle which is above par. 21 Video Diaries, all with the Director Introduction. 12 Deleted Scenes and an alternate ending. Two short films: "Dad's Dead," and "Mole Hills" which are mediocre. And the theatrical trailer. The High Definition Exclusive content on this disc are probably the best I have seen on a Blu-ray disc yet. The "Enhanced Viewing Mode" which in the picture-in-picture video commentary are well worth the Blu-ray disc purchase alone (Profile 1.1). It also features a "Surround Sound Mixer" which you can take audio from the movie and listen to it by itself, or take your favorite parts and put them together. A subtitle trivia track, which is loaded will tons and tons of information about the movie, production, and actors. And a search content index. These are probably the best HD and extra conent features that I have seen on a Blu-ray disc and are well worth the price. Extras: ***** "Sunshine" is my favorite movie of 2007 and could possibly be the best Blu-ray Disc of 2007/2008. I can't believe all the High Definition content on this disc and it is well worth the price. Profile 1.1, also known as "Enhanced Viewing Mode" is a great addition to Blu-ray disc and I believe this is what will bring Blu-ray out in the end (also the fact that blu-ray has Disney). I would highly recommend this Blu-ray disc to ANYONE who ones a Blu-ray disc player. A must buy. If I could rate this any higher I would. Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008. Overall: *****

Sunshine is the most remarkable and genuine science fiction film since 2001. It relies on feeling, tension, and heart to make it what it is. It's infinitely refreshing, hearkening back to the glory days of the genre with nods to the aforementioned 2001 and perhaps the greatest science fiction/horror film of all time, Alien. Danny Boyle's Sunshine and his previous film 28 Days Later are genuine masterpieces both inside and outside of their respective genres and with these two films he has catapulted into my list of favorite directors. This is a top-notch Blu-ray disc that offers superior image and sound quality. The supplements alone are worth the price of admission, though the lack of 1080p is the only fault I have with them. I cannot stress enough that Sunshine is essential viewing for science fiction fans, and as such it receives my highest recommendation.

    Danny Boyle acheived Magnificence

From start to finish Boyle captivates the imagination in any and everyone who watches the film with dazzling scenes so magnificent and outstreched that it blows the mind. Granted the movie is not for everyone, mostly to those who enjoy science fiction, this movie will dazzle you away. This movie is a rarity in my eyes, its Boyles emotion to his thrills, take 28 days and 28 weeks later, no emotion, only thrills and scary situations, now Sunshine has it all, the thrills, the frightening situations, although completely different from in his 28 series, they are more heart throbbing emotional thrill rides filled with great characters, and one amazing unforgetable ending that left me speechless, Danny Boyle out did himself with this film and he is on my list of directors who just keep giving...The movie is beyond 5 stars beyond any rating anyone could give, this is a movie that you need to see and judge with your own eyes.

this was only a limited release, which has both advantages and disadvantages. Advantage: if you are into independent/forgein films, then you would have seen this in its limited theatrical release, and gone to see it with friends of the same taste. Disadvantage: not alot of people knew about it, it wasnt marketed, only marketed by word of mouth. Review: this is one of danny boyles best films next to TRAINSPOTTING 28 Days Later, and MILLIONS. the direction, visuals, story, dialouge, and acting, is superb. this was an amazing story from begining to end. the cast was nothing short of perfect for this type of film. in short this was danny boyle's newest masterpeice. He has the midas touch, when given screenplays, he knows exactly what do to when it comes to changes. He is an incredible story teller and director. 5 STARS see SUNSHINE

I have seen only two movies this year that wowed me when I walked out of the theater. This was one of them. The visuals are so amazing that you don't even want to blink for fear of missing even one second of the film. The soundtrack is even better. This is honestly one of the best movies I've ever seen. The acting is amazing and the visuals are top notch. You see how people would truly react in the most difficult of situations. I would recommend buying this movie to everybody. For me it will go down as one of the best films ever made.....my opinion only.

This would have to be my favorite move of all times since seeing it.... This movie is a great example of many weaknesses in the human race. I would recommend Sunshine to any person who likes movies. When i first saw it and read the synopsis i was weary as to whether or not it would be worth an hour and 47 minutes of my time but once it was in the dvd player, those doubtful feelings completely vanished. I hope that this review will push many weary people to go out and buy or even rent Sunshine to watch it and erase all doubt from their minds like me.

This is a great movie, my wife and I loved it! My wife loves horror, but isn't into sci-fi movies that much, it has to be really good to grab her interest. This movie had both of us on the edge of our seats! This film had great acting, great special effects, and a great director (Danny Boyle- 28 Days Later). This is a fast paced thrill ride of a movie! I highly recommend! Also, some similar sci-fi horror films that are really good are Event Horizon, Dark City, and Dante 01.

4 of 5 stars for this exciting and suspenseful sci-fi movie. An unusual storyline with solid action and sci-fi special effects. A bit far-fetched (traveling to the Sun to explode a bomb to re-energize the Sun), but hey, its Sci-fi. Very dramatic photographic and editing style with extreme quick cuts during the action fight scenes. This is a great movie! Frankly, I am surprised I'd never heard of it before now. Highly recommended. Oh make sure your sub-woofer is cranked-up!
