Change is good!! Groove is good!! Ray does a good job changing it up and getting his groove on. Lets face it, his previous efforts are great, but if his more mellow fare is what you want, then by all means go back and listen to your previous purchases (emphasis on purchase...hope you paid...artists do deserve to make a living, but that's another topic for another time). Fact is, good artists evolve and take chances...and in this case Ray has done both. Successfully. Give it chance, open your mind, listen more than once, and you will enjoy this version of Ray's music. Good stuff!

While this new album on the surface sounds more produced and less gritty than his older albums, the style is still wholly-unique and channels some of the greatest sounding cultural nuances from the singer/songwriter and folk/rock heydays of the late-60s and early-70s. All this while keeping true to the originality and piercing complexity and depth that makes Ray a refreshing departure from all the noise masquerading as music out there today.

I first heard Ray LaMontagne on David Letterman and he caught my attention immediately....very skillful guitar player....awesome sound reminecent of Stevie Ray Vaughn....I wanted to hear more. His video for the song Supernova is quite entertaining as well....so animated....I would definately go to his concert if he came to my town. I highly recommend this album as your introduction to his music or for the avid fan.

It's unfortunate that a great artist like Ray lets one of the Black Keys pollute this album with Brit-pop garbage. Lesson learned here, just because you're successful on the pop charts doesn't mean you should try to produce a real artist's record. The Black Keys should stick to making their own terrible music and refrain from churning out uber-polished, pop candy for real musicians.

Yet another twist for Ray LaMantagne

I'm a Ray LaMontagne fan and like that each album takes a different direction. I bought this without listening to any of the songs first and right away noticed a sixties kind of low key spacey sound. I like it! Also love that he worked with Dan Auerbach on this, as I'm also a fan of Dan Auerbach's solo album. Yet another Ray LaMontagne success in my book.

You can definitely hear the influence of Dan Auerbach on this disc. I think he naturally extended some of Ray's strengths into a more refined sound. I do however miss Ray's smoky, raspy voice on this disc, as he sounds a bit "processed" at times. My favorite tracks are Supernova (love the bass lines) and Drive-in Movies. Enjoy...

Always soulful and sincere, Ray definitely wears his 70s influences proudly and maybe a little cliched-ly, sorta like he wasn't really "there" then (which he wasn't). Still nice to have a keeper of the classic rock flame that classic rock stations should actually try to work into their pathetic and worn-out playlists. B+

I have been a Ray LaMontagne fan for many years & own all of his studio CDs. This CD is different than his usual sound. Some of the tracks have a 1960's type sound. I would not rate this CD as one of his best works. I do think that the more one listens to it the more it will grow on him/her.
