No Strings Attached: Tips for Picking the Right Wireless Headphones

The days of twisted, tangled-up cords are quickly becoming a thing of the past as wireless headphones have emerged as one of the industry’s hottest trends.

While wireless technology has been around for a few years now, consumer adoption has surged as Bluetooth connectivity and sound quality have improved. The Consumer Technology Association reports that wireless headphones have become one of the fastest-growing tech device categories, with more than one-third of U.S. households now owning a pair. From phones to portable speakers, wireless is becoming the way to go.

From Beats and Bose® to Sony and Skullcandy, there are hundreds of options to choose from — and there’s a pair for every lifestyle and every budget.

Kevin Kwok, a Blue Shirt at Best Buy store 611 in Eden Prairie, Minnesota shared about the latest in wireless headphones.

Sports and Fitness

Whether you’re jogging or lifting weights, listening to your favorite jams can make any workout better — unless you get caught in the cords. Wireless headphones eliminate that hassle while still providing excellent sound quality.

“Most people who come into the store for wireless earbuds are looking for a good, secure fit,” Kevin said. “And sweatproof is one of the main must-haves, just so they don’t break or slip out of your ears when you’re moving around.”

Popular in-ear options include Bose® SoundSport®, Beats Powerbeats and JayBird Freedom. They’re all small, lightweight and easy to charge. Some wireless headphones even have Bluetooth ranges that extend far enough that you may be able to leave your phone in your locker at the gym while streaming tunes on the treadmill.

Business and Travel

Travel a lot? A good pair of on-ear or over-ear headphones will allow you to enjoy a podcast or watch a movie uninterrupted during a long flight. You might even be able to catch some z's if you go with a noise-reducing or noise-canceling option that can help drown out cabin noise (and crying babies).

Beats, Bose® and JBL are all good options for that,” Kevin said, noting that they’re also popular options for tuning out distractions at the office. “Some people don’t even use them for music, they just use the noise canceling part sometimes.”

The Bose® QuietComfort® 35 has quickly become a favorite active noise-canceling headphones. It features easy device pairing, a convenient fold-up design, and a rechargeable battery rated for 20 hours of use.

Style and Fashion

Looking for some stylish, high-quality headphones for listening to tunes before class, on the bus or just while relaxing at home? For everyday use, Best Buy offers a wide range of styles, colors and prices to choose from.

Kevin says over-ear headphones from Beats and Sony are some of the favorites, thanks to the wide array of bright colors they offer. Skullcandy, JBL, and SOL REPUBLIC also have some bold colors and patterns for an added sense of personal flair.

When choosing the right pair for you, Kevin recommends starting with the product specs, such as battery life and sound isolation. But, ultimately, the decision comes down to which look and feel is right for you.

“It’s really more about personal preference,” he said. “I always ask customers whether they’ve tried it out yet, and if they haven’t, I’ll have them try it out and see if they like it or not.”
