    Synopsis

    The American
In the aftermath of a job gone awry, an American hitman retreats to the Italian countryside, where he befriends a local priest and strikes up an unexpected romance while awaiting the details of his next assignment. Jack (George Clooney) is lucky to be alive after his Swedish assignment went sour, and he knows that it's only a matter of time before his luck runs out. Not eager to tempt fate again, Jack arrives in a small Italian town and takes a job assembling a weapon for the mysterious Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). During this uncharacteristically peaceful interlude, Jack befriends kindly clergyman Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli), and connects with pretty local Clara (Violante Placido). But in the process of reaching out for a little human contact, Jack is making himself more vulnerable than ever. The American was adapted for the screen from the novel A Very Private Gentleman by author Martin Booth. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Great Progressive Film. Refreshing for Clooney.

For the progressive film fans out there this is a beauty. Anton Corbijn's The American effortlessly strays away from Hollywood's predictable thriller genre plagued by its' tendency towards an easy closure. This film will keep the viewer guessing until the very last shot and will immediately invite a second screening. Clooney's performance is one of simplistic austerity and is genuinely refreshing from his recent role in the Ocean's series. The cinematography, excellent by any regards, includes breathtaking tracking shots through the streets of Italy's steep hillside town of Castel del Montel and extraordinary extreme wide shots of Sweden's wintry Jamtland Province. Not surprisingly a Focus Features film, this is easily one of the best films to challenge the thriller genre to date.

      Great Movie

The American was a great movie! It was a pleasure to watch a movie wihout a sappy melodramatic piece of music at every turn to cue us that something is about to happen. Some of the other reviewers complain about a lack of dialog but I think that's just a symptom of addiction to 30s soundbites. Clooney's character is a loner by necessity rather than choice. He's torn between the life he is living and his desire to change it. I think it was filled with suspense and beautiful cinematography.

This movie is really really really really bad. Main character chews gum in every scene dialogue and ending are nonsensical. Shoots his wife for no reason and admits it. Watch only If you want 2 hours sucked out of you and your eyes boiled. This movie breaks Geneva convention. Would recommend to an enemy. Rather drag toothbrush across my eyes. Electric toothbrush! If you want to watch the worst movie ever watch this. You have been warned.

      Not your typical action/thriller

For those expecting another "Oceans" movie you will be disappointed. For those looking for a decent thinker-thriller you will like this movie. The cinematography is excellent, and I think Clooney excels as the American spy who no longer trusts anyone, yet falls for a girl he knows he shouldn't. Not the best movie ever, but certainly not worth the one star some others have given it.

The film does not live up to the previews. Very slow developing story with no real rise to the climax. Its a nice story overall with some very nice scenes. Some sub plots develop with no reason or closure. Clooney is great as always, but the movie just left me saying "That was it?"

Good show. Not going to make my top one hundred, but a keeper. Glad I bought it. Picture quality could have been better. Specially considering it was a bluray film. Maybe just a cut above the westerns Clint Eastwood did in Italy.

Bad Movie. Almost no dialog. Most of this movie is watching George Clooney walk around with a sad look on his face. The ending is not satisfying at all. You could almost say that this film doesn't have an ending. It just stops.

This is a very slow unfolding plot. Why? Because it was so very simplistic. Millions of wasted consumer dollars will be spent on this DVD and BluRay. Better Luck next time George.
