A powerful and more realistic western

This is a beautiful movie that takes another aspect to the wild west. Instead of targeting primitive movie fans with short attention spans and a lust for action, this movie aims to please by cinematography, character development, and superb acting. Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck have as good of a performance as I've ever witnessed. Sam Rockwell also displays a solid performance. This movie spends the majority of its time letting you see an objective side to the lives of Jesse James and Bob Ford. Not just what the comics or newspapers propagandized. Both James and Ford were two highly complex individuals and this movie does a great job of portraying that. The movie gives each two distinct themes with the cinematography and soundtrack. I really felt connected with both characters as the movie was a dedication to them both. Instead of your typical western with off-the-wall gun fights, this movie takes a more realistic approach. And while the movie is developing its characters, the tension builds as the climax approaches. Although the movie takes about 2 and a half hours to get to the climax, I still didn't mind because I was still almost fooled that the inevitable couldn't happen. And even after the climax there is a continuation of the story which isn't hinted at in the title and makes the movie even more enjoyable. I recommend this film for those who enjoy great acting, cinematography, soundtracks, and a powerful connection with the characters of the movie.

A lyrical look at the legendary outlaw's destiny

This film tells the tale of young Robert Ford, a boy who joins Jesse James's gang, of which his brother is a member, hoping to take some of the legendary outlaw's fame and popularity for himself. As portrayed by Pitt, James is a solemn, pensive man who's occasional outbursts of paranoia and brutality are all the more shocking because of his ordinarily calm temperament. In the end, this is a film about what it is to be famous or to seek fame. This is above all a character study. Some have previously complained that the film is too long and does not fi the typical conventions of the western. It is fair to note that it is unfair to expect ANY film to simply follow a formula, and to judge this film for not being exactly what one expects is not fair to the film. With that said, this film, though excellent, will not please everyone. It is slow-paced, with a lot of emphasis placed upont the visuals, which are stunning, and the assassination of the title is long in coming. However, this is a beautiful piece, and for those who are willing to go into it without any overwhelming expectations will surely be won over by the acting and cinematography.

      Very Disapointing

This movie is not what i expected at all. Since it is a Western, I assumed it would be like Tombstone or Young Guns. There is no action at all in this movie. The same depressing music is played throughout the entire film. Robert Ford is a coward, but, just like the rest of the James Gang (exlcuding Jesse James), they are all uneducated and dumb. They are just a bunch of idiots! It's hard to believe that Jesse James had these men for his "gang". No wonder he got shot in the back of the head. Seriously, who dusts and straightens a picture on the wall when company is over? Is this really how the life of a famous legendary outlaw ended? How do we know Robert Ford isn't making this up to make himself look good (obviously he's not smart enough to begin with)? The entire film was slow, drab, and depressing. It was very hard not to fall asleep during this movie. Like I said before, it is very disapointing to find out that this legendary outlaw was not so great after all.

      Visually Stunning Movie

This movie is visually stunning to begin with. From the first scenes of the movie you grasp what it was like back in those days, what the Jesse Gang had to go through and what made their lives difficult. The movie is about Jesse James and his assassination by Robert Ford, his partner. Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck give breathtaking performences as Jesse James and Robert Ford. Brad Pitt plays his character with heart and complete devotion. Casey, as Robert Ford is perfect as Robert Ford is both shy and kind while also devious and idolizes his hero, Jesse James. Although the movie runs close to three hours, it is a great movie that should not be missed.

First of all, the cinematography was impecable and flawless. It is a beautiful movie and it is as close and accurate as it could get to the real life legend Jesse James. Casey Affleck is remarkable as Robert Ford, you just love him playing the envious coward, he is perfect. The Academy Awards failed to reward this one, for I think it should of been nominated for Best Picture, Director and Screenplay for Andrew Dominik, and the ones that it did get Supporting Actor for Affleck and of course the cinematography which only lost to the equally masterful work of Robert Elswit for There Will Be Blood.

One of the greatest movies EVER

I'm a film and video student in Grand Rapids and have taken various theory, study, and production classes so I can honestly say with confidence that this movie was amazing in every aspect (especially cinematography)! Anyone who thinks differently has no idea what a good movie is. It's not all about violence and explosions, if you want that go watch Transformers again.

A real yawner! Wake me when it's over!

Altho I am definitely a fan of Brad Pitt and Jeremy Renner, I am not that fond of Casey Affleck. I can't believe that he got an Academy Award noimnation for his wooden performance in this yawner. His dull, monotone voice really grated on me. This film was far too long and all the principle actors in this dredge seemed as bored as the audience. Knowing full well what the climax was, it was extremely diffucult to sit thru this trainwreck.

The WILD west just got SLOWER

I had some high hopes for this movie and yet, all I really got out of it was a little more knowledge of who Jesse James was. For someone that was so infamous, this movie fails to show you the reasons for how he came to be that way. The cinematography was very nice, but I was left wishing that there was more action and more substance to what I just watched.
