    Synopsis

    The Babadook
Amelia (Essie Davis), the heroine of Jennifer Kent's horror movie The Babadook, is an Australian single mother haunted by memories of her late husband's tragic death. He was in the midst of taking his very pregnant wife to the delivery room when the couple had a devastating car wreck. Mother and baby were saved; dad perished. That was six years ago. Now, as the story opens, Amelia is raising her young son Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a sweet-natured but very precocious and troubled little boy. On a nightly basis, Samuel grows convinced that monsters lurk beneath his bed, and he has even constructed homemade weapons, such as a miniature wooden catapult and crossbow, to fend off the invading enemies. His eccentric behavior alienates his schoolteachers, who insist on removing him from a group setting in the classroom in favor of a special-needs situation with a one-on-one tutor. Meanwhile, Samuel's conduct stresses Amelia to the breaking point. The situation at home grows much more bizarre when Samuel asks his mom to read to him, and produces a strange children's storybook from his bedroom shelf. Entitled "The Babadook," it's an eerie pop-up book with charcoal illustrations of a demonic figure that announces itself by knocking at the door of a house six times ("Ba-ba-ba-DOOK-DOOK-DOOK"), and then devours all who reside within. Neither Amelia nor Samuel have ever seen this volume before, nor do they know how it turned up in their home. Stranger still, it lacks an author and publishing information. The book instantly has Samuel in tears, and Amelia plans to dispose of it, but that same night, six knocks sound on the door and rattle the house... ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

The Best Horror Movie of 2014

Not only was The Babadook the best horror movie of 2014, it was one of the best movies to come out last year. I've read many reviews from people who did not like the movie, and the majority of them did not understand what the movie actually was. The Babadook is not the typical horror movie that studios endlessly spit out year after year; it does not rely on cheap jump scares to frighten you, and actually has good writing and direction, not to mention phenomenal acting from lead actress Essie Davis. If you go into this movie expecting the latest Insidious sequel, you might be disappointed. What The Babadook is, is a stark portrayal of grief and depression, and how they can take over a person's life and turn them into something ugly. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of horror, or movies in general. The Special Edition cover features a pop-out of The Babadook, which is cool if you don't mind spending a couple bucks more. Otherwise, the normal Blu-Ray is perfectly fine.

"If it's in a word... or in a look... you can't get rid of the Babadook!" Amelia (actress Essie Davis) is a single mother who, with her young son, experiences first hand the frightening entity that manifests itself in the eerie text of a mysterious book entitled 'Mr. Babadook.' The ominous pop-up illustrations from the pages of the book are but a harbinger of the gruesome presence that soon comes to shroud her home and her life with its evil darkness! Imaginative and creepy, "The Babadook' is a wicked journey into the darkness of the mind as well as the shadows of the supernatural world! Watch it with the lights turned off! But... beware of the shadows in the far corners of the room!

I have always been a fan of Best Buy’s movie Exclusive packs. They are my go to packaging when it comes to choosing where to pick up the latest movie. I can always count on Best Buy to be there for my family and I, to ensure that we got the best quality for our money. Even though lately Best Buy has on a few occasions let my family and I down. By either not having their Exclusive packs in stock or 95% of the packages are damaged. Which is a severe disappoint to me, because I’ve been a loyal customer of the Exclusive packs since Best Buy started offering their Exclusive packs. But still when the Exclusive packs are available, they are a great buy. All and all this product had the potential to be great if readily available, but in the end with the lack of quality control it was al’ight.

A haunting, legitimately unsettling film about many things (parenting, women's agency, grief) that, like any great horror film, focuses on building a terrifying atmosphere instead of relying on jump scares. Two amazing performances, anchored by first-time writer/director Jennifer Kent's confident direction. The Blu-ray has fantastic video/audio, and includes a handful of of behind-the-scenes featurettes, a lot of cast interviews, and most valuably, Kent's short film "Monster", which was the basis of many ideas she explores in The Babadook. Not a film for the easily disturbed, but not for the typical "blood-and-guts" horror junkie. Highly recommended.

Don't read this review. Just go out and buy this movie. All right, if you MUST know... "The Babadook" is an amazingly creepy and eerie story that does not rely on gruesome effects, on jump scare every three seconds, on every trick in the book. "The Babadook" rewrites the book altogether. It's spooky and stylish — supported by excellent and believable performances. Minimalistic as it is, it will make you shift position on the couch because you'll be genuinely freaked out. And, if someone knocks three times at your door... Good luck.

I highly recommend picking up this version of The Babadook. It is a horror film collectors dream! Me being one of course so I know what I'm talking about. The limited edition pop up slide cover is very creative and original. Both the acting and over all plot of the film is original and good. The actors and director did a great job in my opinion. Its definitely one of the best horror movies i have seen in 2014. its one of a kind and can't wait to see what future projects Jennifer Kent directs!

Rather than relying on gore or shock value, The Babadook brings tension to the screen via outstanding performances by the mother (played by the wonderful Essie Davis) and her incredibly annoying son. Without ever showing too much at once, this film manages to be both creepy and suspenseful. Honestly though, I was more frightened of Essie Davis than I was of Mr. Babadook! Blu-ray quality looks quite good, but it's the audio that conjurs nail biting tension. Very recommended!

The Babadook IS NOT a horror film. Now that that's out of the way what The Babadook is is psychological horror. It's a study of a woman who is on the verge of collapse both mentally and physically. Dealing with a young son and the memory of her deceased husband causes the Babadook to surface and terrorize her home. On the other hand the Babadook is great looking monster. Creepy and fast as it skitters across the ceiling. It's look owes a lot to Ceasar from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
