The Beast Must Die [DVD] [1972]

Release Date:07/25/2006
Dark Sky has assembled another solid DVD for an Amicus title with this edition of The Beast Must Die. The video transfer is an improvement over prior domestic editions of this title, boasting an anamorphic, letterboxed transfer with solid color and detail levels. It does a nice job of cleaning up the day-for-night scenes that were hard to see in past video versions of this title. In terms of audio, it sticks to the original mono mix for the film, and this soundtrack offers a good balance of dialogue, effects, and music. Dark Sky's release of this disc also imports some nice extras used on the U.K. disc of this film -- namely, a commentary and an interview featurette that both focus on director Paul Annett. There's an overlap of information in the two supplements, but Annett makes for an engaging subject, particularly on the commentary, where he lays out a lot of interesting trivia and on-the-set stories (genre fans will be amused by the tales of other actors considered for this film). The extras are rounded out by a set of trailers for other Dark Sky/Amicus DVDs and some concise bios of the cast and crew members. All in all, this DVD offers a great way for horror fans to acquaint themselves with this horror oddity.

    The Beast Must Die
In this little horror film, a wealthy sportsman (Calvin Lockhart) invites a house full of guests to a big-game hunt that he's devised. He's sure that one of the guests is a werewolf, and he intends to stalk it, find it, and kill it. As a film viewer, you are alerted at the outset that a mystery awaits and that clues will be unveiled that can point to the identity of the werewolf. In fact, near the conclusion, the film has inserted a 30-second interlude during which you must decide, once and for all, who the hunted beast is. This film is based upon a story by James Blish titled There Shall Be No Darkness. ~ Phillip Erlewine, Rovi
