The Best of the 80s: Magnum, P.I. [2 Discs] [DVD]

Anything with Tom Selleck is great to me. I know it's from the 80's but it's still great.

Just picked up this 2 disc set today. For the most part, the episodes are exactly identintical to the season sets that they are from. I tend to disagree with some of the selections for best episodes but they are still very good. What's different about this set is that for the first time, the two hour pilot and the 2 hour 2nd season episodes are actually presented in their 2 part syndicated 2 parts, including recaps from the previous part. The final episodes Resolutions Parts 1 and 2 also seems to be from the syndicated airing as on the original 8th season, I believe there is no recap from part 1 as both part 1 and part 2, though shown in 2 parts on the same night, whearas on this set the there is a recap. The episodes are: Pilot (Don't Eat The Snow in Hawaii, Part 1 and 2) in 2 parts, Season 2 - Memories Are Forever in 2 parts, and from Season 4 Home from the Sea, on disk 2, From Seasons 5 - 7, respectively Blind Justice, Kona Winds, and the final season episode Limbo (which was at one time thought to be the final episode) The final 2 episodes of this 10 episode set is the 2 part finale from Season 8. I kind of wished they would have instead put the syndicated version of the crossover episode, Novel Connection (crossed over with Murder She Wrote) where they re-edited the story to finish in 1 hour as opposed to concluding the next weekt on Murder She Wrote. The single version is only available on a now, rare hard to find VHS copy. There were 2 crossover stories, Season 1 has the 2 part story beginning as Ki'is Don't Lie on Magnum (from season 3) concluding as Diamonds Aren't a Girl's Best Friend on season 2 of Simon and Simon. The 3rd season set of Magnum P.I. includes the alternate version that told the story in 1 hour. Maybe these best of collections will sell well and Universal will release a 2nd volume with the missing version of Novel Connnection and the remaining syndicated versions of the 2 part versions of the 2 hour episodes. Other shows in the best of series are: A-Team, Knight Rider, and Miami Vice, all of which feature the pilot and final episodes of those series. Maybe they will do a 70's version where we can finally get a copy of the actual Buck Rogers pilot, and not the movie version. Video and Sound quality are excellent. The disk is absent of extras but they are not really necessary for this set thus I gave it an average score.
