    It's the Dead . . . Need I Say More?

Only the second major career-spanning retrospective of the Dead, The Best of the Grateful Dead -- released in the spring of 2015, just before a series of farewell shows in the summer -- takes advantage of the extra disc 2003's The Very Best of Grateful Dead lacked. Weighing in at 32 tracks -- a full 16 cuts longer than Very Best -- The Best of the Grateful Dead also follows a strict chronological sequence, so it takes a little while for the psychedelic haze to lift and the Dead to settle into the rangy, rootsy groove that characterized so much of their existence -- right around "St. Stephen" and "China Cat Sunflower," both from 1969's Aoxomoxoa. From there, many -- but by no means all -- of the group's warhorses are marched out, all in their studio incarnations. This structure perhaps invites some griping about their sometimes ill-advised attempts to ride commercial waves -- there's no disguising the disco diversion of "Shakedown Street" -- but by celebrating the warts and providing space for that unexpected late-'80s commercial comeback, The Best of the Grateful Dead is a good capsule history of a band that usually defies such straightforward narratives.

Remastered versions of the Dead's best studio work. Comprehensive and deep - covers all eras, unlike earlier collections, and includes multiple cuts from each album. By far the best sounding Dead best of collection, the remastered versions used here sound terrific. Only complaint: I would have loved to have the Dark Star from Live/Dead instead of the (really rather dismal) 2 minute studio version, perhaps by using an edited version of Terrapin Station to allow the much longer live Dark Star to fit

All their best songs, I have a few live from their website but they are kind of muddled and a bit long. Having 700+ CD's. I like to put my music on my Flash Drive and JAM rolling down the Road on my Harley, this selection was great to round out my collection of road music!

    Missing a couple critical songs

Overall this is a great collection for Dead fans. However it is missing a couple of what I consider to be critical songs in the Dead Anthology. US Blues and Alabama Getaway are just two of the ones that come to my mind. If you love the Dead and want "most" of their best songs collected in one place this is the choice for you. Great packaging and liner notes!

This CD set is very well packaged with an embossed cover and booklet. The music is a small sample of their best works. Even if you're not a big fan of their music there are many familiar songs that will grow on you and introduce you to their (vast) catalog if you want more.

I really enjoy "greatest hits & best of" music compilations because you can get a mixed bag of your favorite artists. Sometimes it's a hit, other times it's a miss. This time it was definitely a hit. The cd was on sale but I would've bought it at regular price!

Even if you're not a deadhead, there's a lot to appreciate here. A superb roundup of the long, strange trip.
