One of my favorite films ever
||Posted .Owned for 3 months when reviewed. My guilty pleasure in films, are Indie Dramedies, or Romantic Comedies. This falls more in the former category of a Dramedy(Drama/Comedy). You may or may not know this film is based on the true story of actor Kumail Nanjiani(in the film) and his real wife Emily Gordon(not in the film) and the hardship they went through after meeting and falling in love. Partially due to his ethnicity, and partially due to some unforeseen medical issues that fall on them. This film is so well written, and acted and both makes you laugh and tear up and the same time. Such a poignant film handled with an everyday man approach to the subject matter. You never lose touch of the heart that is in this film. And don't get me wrong the film is filled with funny lines, and interesting situations, and there really is something here for everyone. I saw this film in the theater three times, and so of course I had to purchase it. One of the best films I've seen of any genre. I can't recommend this film highly enough. Just watch it. Totally worth the purchases and re-watch value is off the charts.

||Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed.Movie was good. Simple story line but some cultural issues (interracial dating and arranged marriage) that some viewers may experience first hand...

Can love survive outside a vacuum
||Posted .Nature loves diversity, but cultures don't seem to. Guilt trips, and worse, assault non-linear people - those who do not follow in someone else's footsteps. Pressures may help us follow a healthier path, but they can confuse us as to what path we really want to take for ourselves. America's ethnic, economic and age diverse culture offers individuals many opportunities, but there are also many challenges to those wanting to take advantage of the opportunities. "The Big Sick" did a good job giving a glimpse of one version of this conundrum and how difficult a non-linear path can be once one reveals their conundrum to others. For individuals, cultures or nations, their biggest strength can, under different circumstances, be their biggest weakness. Diversity in ourselves or in a nation, can be a delicate flower, wilted by closed minds, like bigotry, but can lead to great strength if allowed to blossom. The movie felt like a real experience of a person evolving and discovering the strength to be himself.

Good Story taken from real life
||Posted .Though i'ts billed as a comedy, it's more of a real life style humor. The couple who wrote the movie took it from their real life. I don't think it would be a spoiler to say that it covers their relationship and their relationships with their parents while she is put into a medical coma to try and save her life. They did find a way to find some humor into the events that closely mirror what happened (according to the extras). There is a lot of drama to go with the laughs as it is anchored very well into a real story that should keep anyone who likes in depth character pieces. Definitely worthy of the hype that went on around this film when it came out in the theaters. Even the dvd has a fair amount of extras that help add to the movie for those who like to get more for their money than just a movie.

The Little Things
||Posted .What “The Big Sick” ends up accomplishing, is -- in my mind -- perfect romantic comedy. It’s funny, touching, and perceptive. The way in which it deals with cultural/religious differences is timely, as is the reminder of how much of a melting pot the United States has become. Kumail and Emily have infused the screenplay with genuine details. These little things are one reason why “The Big Sick” works. We sense from the beginning that, although the framework is that of a romantic comedy, there’s something true-to-life going on here.

Different and funny
||Posted .People had reasons for disliking this movie, like the idea that it is another in a line of films and shows that make beautiful the idea of leaving behind your religious background for an Americanized foreigner, but this was based on the real couple behind the movie, so it sounds a bit unfair to throw it in with the rest. That being said, many comedians I love were in this doing both dramatic and comedic scenes, and the characters were all people I feel I'd met before. A sweet story with enough funny to not require devastatingly cruel scenes or holy sh_t moments.
