Long a cult favorite with enthusiasts of 1970s exploitation cinema, The Candy Snatchers finally gets an authorized home-video release with this lovingly assembled special edition DVD from Subversive Cinema. The Candy Snatchers has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, as well as being enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The liner notes claim that this disc was sourced from the film's original negative, and the clarity of the image and the vivid, ruddy 1970s Eastmancolor suggest this is true; even if this film had a long history on video, it's doubtful it would ever look better than this. The audio has been mastered in two formats: the original mix in Dolby Digital Mono and a new stereo version in Dolby Digital Stereo. The sound is crisp and sharp, though it shows its age just a bit more than the visuals. The disc has also been loaded with bonus materials, including a commentary track featuring actresses Tiffany Bolling and Susan Sennett, film fan Mark Edward Heuck, and Norm Hill of Subversive Cinema. Sennett and Bolling also appear in a short feature "The Women of The Candy Snatchers," in which they discuss their experiences (positive and negative) while making the movie and what they're doing today. Two trailers for the picture are included, as well as previews of other Subversive releases; bios for the cast and creative team also appear, along with a gallery of stills. In short, this is a superlative release of a movie that's long been on the want list of fans of strange cinema (even if the package does misspell Susan Sennett's name), and Subversive Cinema is to be congratulated for pulling out the stops on this project.
