    Synopsis

    The Conjuring
A demonic entity lays claim to family living in a secluded farmhouse, prompting them to seek the aid of two renowned paranormal researchers in this tale of possession inspired by actual events. The story gets underway as paranormal researchers Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) evaluate a mysterious doll discovered by a trio of young roommates in 1968. Believing their house to be haunted by the wayward spirit of a deceased young girl, they give the girl permission to inhabit the doll, and soon their lives become a waking nightmare. Informed by Ed and Lorraine that they have fallen victim to an inhuman spirit (aka a demon) seeking a human host, the roommates entrust the doll to the Warrens, who place it in their personal museum for safekeeping. Flash forward three years to Harrisville, RI, where the Perron family have just moved into their country dream home -- an 18th century farmhouse that offers plenty of space for parents Carolyn (Lili Taylor) and Roger (Ron Livingston), as well as their five daughters Andrea (Shanley Caswell), Nancy (Hayley McFarland), Christine (Joey King), Cindy (Mackenzie Foy), and April (Kyla Deaver). It seems like the ideal place to raise a family until a series of unsettling events leave the Perron family convinced they are not alone. Terrified, Carolyn reaches out to the Warrens for help, and learns that a demonic entity has attached itself to her family, and has no intentions of letting them go. Meanwhile, the deeper the Warrens delve into the farmhouse's history, the clearer it becomes that this spirit has a murderous agenda, and that no one will be safe until it is driven back into darkness. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I was thoroughly impressed by this movie. Supposedly this did insanely well when they ran this through test screenings and I can see why. The Conjuring had a lot to offer and didn't try to fill its running time by checking off every box on the horror movie cliche checklist. There are some tried and true formats here to be sure, but they're fairly well executed. The movie makes use of a lot of jump scares, so if you're irritated by those I would probably wait until this hits the rental sites. They're all done in good fun and are for the most part genuinely spooky, although I'll say that the jump scares were far more effective in the beginning of the movie. The acting was excellent in this and whomever thought to hire Lili Taylor should get a huge pat on the back. She's probably the strongest actor in this piece, second only to Vera Farmiga. The ladies genuinely rocked this movie fairly hard. The guys were good as well, but let's not pretend that they were there for anything other than to be played off the women. Now as far as story goes, this was decent. It's actually a fairly simplistic story line when you get down to it. There wasn't a lot of gussying up of the subject matter, although there was somewhat of a side story that surrounded the Warrens' daughter, the demon, and a doll from the beginning of the movie. I do have to admit that I'm not sure what I felt about that part. The doll's acquisition was shown at the beginning of the movie and largely had nothing to do with what the Perrons went through, except for showing up in one scene. The scare surrounding this scene was decent, but I kind of feel that it was one of the two weakest scenes in the film. The other weakest scene? I hate to say it, but it was the showdown in the end. I liked it well enough and it was entertaining, but it also felt slightly anticlimactic. Most viewers won't feel let down by the scene, although my friends and I all agreed that although this was an incredibly strong horror movie, the ending did sort of leave a little to be desired in comparison with the rest of the film. In the end though, the concerns are all fairly minor quibbles. This will still be an excellent film to go see in the theaters and something that I'd recommend for horror fans- especially those who love the older stuff. The director took great pains to make the opening and ending feel like something you'd have seen in the older days of horror, which I greatly appreciated. I'd say that this film is good enough to where it's something I'd outright own when it releases on DVD and assuming that the sequel will be as well done as this was, I'll be there on the opening weekend for whatever other movie they make.

James Wan is a horror director that might have finally peaked with this one. His first SAW film was the best of the bunch and while Insidious had flaws, it also had some great scare moments and visuals. The Conjuring is a near perfect ghost/demonic possession movie. The scares are not cheap and they are 90% effective. A couple felt a little forced, but overall this is one the creepiest movies I have seen in theaters. Based on a "true story" that takes place in 1971, a family becomes the victim of some evil forces in their new house. Two paranormal investigators are brought in to gather evidence. They are based on the famous couple that also investigated The Amityville Horror years later. The acting is great all around from the kids and adults. I like how they didn't use any big name actors. Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson and Ron Livingston are relatively well known, but thankfully no huge star power here to completely take you out of the film. Very little gore, no foul language or nudity in a horror movie? Believe it or not, this thing earned the R rating for pure scares alone. Now don't get too overhyped or anything. I personally didn't jump in my seat or want to cover my eyes (though many scenes are quite chilling), but plenty of people around me did. The Conjuring is my favorite film so far this year. Let's leave it at that.

I am really picky with my horror movies. I prefer things with ghosts, demons, and otherworldly creatures. Slasher flicks are NOT my idea of "horror". This movie brings me back to getting the chills watching horror flicks as a kid (Like the original Poltergeist and, my favorite: The Entity -which I'm surprised no one has tried to remake.) and being afraid of the dark or what was hiding in my closet. The music sets the atmosphere and I love the story telling. It also flows well and doesn't lag with the creepiness. You can understand the characters and motivations. I LOVE that it included actual photos of the families involved to remind viewers that the haunting DID happen to a REAL family. I'll be watching this again and again!

As the first in the conjuring films this one leads the future of the franchise if there's one. After seeing the conjuring 2 I wanted to see what was the first movie about. I found this too was a surprise at every corner as you could sense something was going to happen to scare the wits out of you. Sometimes it did and other times it didn't thanks to a very smart director who made this movie very suspenseful from beginning to end. Some scenes are scary but overall it was worth the price I paid which was on sale. Definitely recommend this one if you like movies dealing with ghosts and evil spirits.

Anxiety and terror felt. That about sums up what this genre is all about. It's been awhile where a movie doesn't depend on gore, and violence to get the audience involved. Conjuring takes a step back from all the current trend of scare movies and puts fear back into film by not only sound effects but the lack there of. Sometimes silence in film can be just a scary as the POP OUT of nowhere scream or boom, Seriously it's worth a watch and if your a fan of the genre it is most definitely worth adding to your collection.

This movie kept my interest and definitely had some "scary" scenes; it's worth watching if you love scary movies.Believe it or not, this thing earned the R rating; now don't get too overhyped or anything, the R rating was for suspenseful and intensely "scary" scenes; not usual gore scenes, not really for language either. Personally didn't jump in my seat or want to cover my eyes (though many scenes are quite chilling), but plenty of people around me did. Acting was ok to pretty good, Cinematics were about the same. Not anything visually stunning. All in all if you like scary movies, definately see this movie.

Phenomenal horror movie. Eery sets, great utilization of the dark, phenomenal sound (must be experienced in surround sound or with quality head phones). There are very few "cheap scares" and barely any blood/gore. There is a constant state of trepidation throughout the film, and the true horror comes from your imagination conjuring up images of what's happening off of the screen (which is often a result of the terrific audio). If you're a horror buff, this is a must see. If you can appreciate a good film in general, this is still a great movie. Don't think it can't be a quality film just because it's a horror movie.

This movie has all scares that a good horror movie needs to be a classic ... this film is very well made by the guy that brought you Saw [James Wan] he has become a master of horror with this entry ... the movie itself is about a family that moves into a house and strange things start to happen ... but this is not the same old story ... It is a real good ride of a movie a lot of edge of your seat moments and also a lot of jumps ... the blu ray has a ton of extras that help tell the true story behind the movie ... well worth a look ... if your a fan of real horror you wont be dissatisfied ... Highly Recommended !!!
