While much of today's popular country seems dumbed-down and almost ridiculous, Mary Chapin Carpenter brings back the old-school heart of country with her music. While her voice is in no way spectacular, the messages of her songs are relevant and meaningful. An especially important and innovative track is "He Thinks He'll Keep Her," a song that criticizes marrying young and living the "American Dream/Family" kind of life. Mary Chapin Carpenter is one of the few comtemporary artists that is keeping me from giving up on country music completely.
