Lousy bland Hollywood script writing has ruined a fantastic science fiction book series (have read all seven books published so far). Sadly, the only way to save the Expanse series is to replace the director, produce, and script writers with a new team who can follow the book series. The special effects are well done, but wasted in background scenes, rather than main plot scenes or action sequences.
The main plot is that humans have expanded across the solar system and divided into three main factors. Earth is overcrowded but still has the largest space fleet and corporations. An independent Mars is trying to terra form the planet but has a more advanced space fleet than Earth. The third faction are the Belters, who are the humans living and working in lower gravity space stations and colonies.
In Season 3 an independent crew is caught between all three factions after an Earth corporation unleashed a biological science experiment that killed and transformed tens of thousands of Belters. This season starts part way through the second book and crams the third book into the second half of the season.
--- Spoiler alert ---
An example of how the script writers messed up is the final episode that has Martian Marines fighting against the independent crew. In the book, the Martian Marines join the crew against a rogue Belter and his Earth supporters. This is a huge change from the book and significant plot mess.
Another example is how the tv script had Clarissa Mao killing a family friend. In the book, the person is a life long family friend who helps convert Clarissa from her path of revenge and eventually helps the independent crew. Instead, we have an illogical sudden conversion of Clarissa, along with a missed battle between her and Amos (one of the independent crew). This is a big point in the book series, as it plays out in later books.
A third example is how the tv show splits up the independent crew in season three. The break up doesn’t occur until later in the book series. Again, a huge mess to clean up in character development and plot.
--- End spoilers ---
The third book describes a lot of the science involved in travelling in space and creating life support. The tv series did not portray it fully, but wasted their budget on background computer graphics scenes, rather than more exciting action scenes.
Am hoping that Amazon’s producer and writers for Season 4 are a different team and have learned from the mistakes made in Seasons 2 and 3. Follow the well written books, rather than bland stereo-typical Hollywood writing.
