The second season makes significant changes from the second book, that is really irritating. The show producers and writers made several bad decisions in changing the characters’ chemistry, teamwork, and trust. Season 2 completes the first book and carries through most of the second book (currently seven books in the series by James Corey).
The original books are well written and it makes no sense for the tv show to make drastic changes. One bad tv series change is having Avasarala best friends with Errinwright. In the book they are rivals and having them friends results in the tv show writers have to make additional changes in Season 3 to keep the main plot going.
Another bad tv series change is that they wasted their budget in a Martian marine squad training sequence, which did not exist in the book. The money spent on the CGI would have been better spent in following the second book and the opening Martian marine battle scene with 20+ marines and a battle mech, not just four marines shown in the tv series. A complete let down, along with the massive space battle that ended up being a short 10 second sequence.
For some reason, the producers and writers decided to deviate from the books and add their very bad spin to the series. This resulted in a disjointed story that dragged on with side characters, rather than the main plot.
Have been watching Season 3 on tv and understand why SyFy decided to cancel the tv series. Amazon will be taking over Season 4, but hopefully with new producers and writers who will follow the book series more closely, and prioritize the budget for exciting scenes that advance the plot, rather than “look cool”. This is the only way to "save" the Expanse series.
Sadly, the pacing, action, and storytelling went down the tubes in Season 2 and further down the septic tank in Season 3. Am glad to have read all seven books that have been published to date, rather than watching season 3.
Season started good but became a let-down in the 2nd half of season 2. Season 1 however, was fantastic.
