Graphics from Xbox 360/PS3 era, bad controls

      Posted

First off, the graphics. This is supposed to be the most realistic golf game out there but the visuals are just not good. The graphics are good when the sun is shining and creating dynamic lighting effects, but when it is overcast in the game, the visuals seem to step back to something you would have seen on an Xbox 360/PS3 5-10 years ago. The crowd models look like they may have been taken from a PS2 game. Aside from just the graphics themselves, there are tons of visual glitches. Textures occasionally don't load onto surfaces. I had a green that looked like one giant patch of rough and made any sort of putting unattainable because you could not read it or the grid. You will also see lots of popup trees as the camera is following a shot, your ball will not make a trail as it rolls through a bunker. From a comparison of YouTube videos, it appears that the PS4 version is really bad off graphically in comparison to the PC version and possibly the Xbox One. Its almost like PS4 was an afterthought version compared to the other two. Just a lot of issues. The gameplay itself seems pretty accurate. It is incredibly difficult to get your swing right. I could only just barely manage with the standard clubs. Player and Tour were hooks and slices non-stop for me. The putts with something else though. You cannot step down max power while putting on the green. It will always hit 100+ feet with a full swing. So its up to you to play a bunch to learn your golfer's animation enough to be able to step down a 15 feet putt out of the 100+ feet it gives for the putter. I don't mind the challenge though. It's up to me to get better. Not the game to water itself down in that department, just could be a little more forgiving. I will say this, however. There seems to be an issue with how accurately calibrated your controller's analog sticks are and how well you will do with this swing mechanic. I had the worst time with the PS4 controller I normally play with, but when I switched to a newer one I have never really used much, I was nailing the swings dead on. So just be aware, the same may happen to you and with new controllers being $50 a piece, you may be at a disadvantage in the game if your controller has some mileage on it and isn't as "true" as this game demands for swings. There are an outrageous amount of bugs and the servers for the game are crashing nonstop. Which means you will not be able to do much in the game besides practicing driving, putting, etc. For some reason, you cannot play career mode unless the servers are up and running. Given the server issues, the issues with the analog sticks and the sub-par graphics for a game in 2017, I personally would not recommend this game to anyone unless you are absolutely desperate for a golf game. I returned the game after two days of it being unplayable due to server issues and all of the glitches. I will wait for Everybody's Golf on the PS4. Surely it has to be better.

I purchased the original Golf Club game for the PC from a bargain bin and enjoyed it quite a bit. I have a fairly high-end computer and was able to enjoy it with maximum details at 1080p resolution at a steady 60 fps. The graphics were great and it was surprisingly easy to pick up and play. The gameplay itself was definitely more in the simulation camp versus the arcade style of Everybody's Golf or mid-2000s EA Sports Tiger Woods titles. The robust course editor was a bonus. Golf Club 2 on PS4 is a noticeable step backward. It uses the same Unity engine as the original, but it is horribly unoptimized on console. Its base frame rate is only 30 fps, and it struggles mightily to maintain that. It stutters like crazy, and there's a ton of texture pop-in. Some of the physics were improved over the original - the ball now "bites" on the green much more realistically. However, to say the putting is inconsistent is an understatement. A light touch will either result in a 3-foot squib or the ball rushing 20 feet past the hole. This aspect of golf wasn't outstanding in the first game either, but it was light years better than the sequel. Save your money and see if The Golf Club 2019 is any better. The developers entered into a partnership with the PGA Tour, which means there will be real courses in addition to the selection of user-generated content. Hopefully they will optimize performance and address the gameplay shortcomings of the first two.

The Golf Club 2 is a great game with lots of replay value. Setup like TGC1, this game has improved graphics, thousands of user-created courses, online/offline career modes, increased creation options for your golfer and an all-new training area to hone your golf skills. I’ve had this game for nearly a week and cannot put it down. There are few golf games for PS4 and The Golf Club 2 is the top golf simulation in my opinion. This game beats out Rory McIlroy (again) and I would recommend it for any diehard golf fan. There is a small learning curve, however most should get the hang of the game after 5-10 practice rounds.

I downloaded Golf Club 1 from the PS store... not so great graphics, nice course designer, HORRIBLE putting mechanics. That said, Tiger Woods games had the putting made too simple. When I bought the Golf Club 2, I thought that the putting issue would have been addressed. Well, it wasn't... the WORST feature I have ever encountered in a sim. It attempts to be realistic by "feel" or "touch", but a 12 foot putt goes 30+ feet- then try to lighten up on a 5 footer, and it goes 1 foot. Graphics still sub par- variety of courses are pretty good. Sorry that I took a chance and bought this game

before you judge, I am a real life golfer, and I have played virtually EVERY golf game ever made...and in every format- ps1, ps2, ps3, ps4, Xbox, Nintendo (ALL) and PC. I DL'd Golf Club 1 on the PS4- great concept, however the graphics were sub-par, NO official courses and OMG, the putting was the WORST in any golf sim. YES, Tiger Woods putting was WAY too easy. But this is ridiculous... Bought Golf Club 2 in a leap of faith- what a mistake- I tried it for about 1 week and took it to Gamestop unload this awful game...

I'm a little disappointed so far. As someone who likes to casually play a round, this game is a bit more frustrating than its predecessor. That is mostly due to the added sensitivity of the controller. Suddenly, I'm sending puts shooting horizontally away from me for no apparent reason. Maybe I'll adjust but it doesn't seem a big enough improvement in other areas for me to stick with it. I do like having new courses from which to choose, though.

The golf part of the game is great. It's fun and intuitive. But the "extra" feature where you can upgrade to better clubhouses is weird. It's not good. They could do so many cool things with this game like make a very detailed career mode where you could move up in the ranks and make money, buy cars/house, etc but they don't, which is fine. But they shouldn't have even attempted anything past just the golf part of the game.

I really enjoy playing golf... when I'm not playing golf! The Golf Club is not stunningly amazing... but it's really graphically and technically a heck of a challenge and a lot of fun to play. The single player if fun for a way to blow off the evening steam... and the social play if you like to get into the group challenges is very well integrated. All around... the best new game in town for rainy day duffers!
