First of all this is a movie about fighting monsters - not a fact based historical epic. Don't take it that seriously and you'll have a good time. The Great Wall tells the story of a group of Western mercenaries, searching for a powerful substance known as black powder, in China. Soon, they get involved in protecting the Great Wall of China against an army of monsters, known as the Taotie. Overall, there is a good balance between East and West. A Western screenplay by Max Brooks keeps things going quickly without the irritating self sacrifice and slow dialog of the recent Dragon Blade movie (Jackie Chan, Adrien Brody). Director Zhang Yimou is known for extravaganzas and sometimes the action does look acrobatic but it's not too bad. The excessive slow motion deaths and explosions that plague some Chinese movies isn't such a problem here. This was an all-out action movie that explored the themes of greed and sacrifice, nobility and savagery. Yimou's masterful direction elevates the movie above standard action fare, giving moments of truly astounding visuals. His use of color not only adds to the visual flair, but also helps to add coherence to the movie while the editing is never confusing. With a running time of less than 2 hours, viewers expecting in-depth characterization along the lines of "Hero" and "Curse of the Golden Flower" will be disappointed. The quiet scenes were a bit lacking, leaving the audience emotionally cold. Nevertheless, it’s not a bad movie and certainly not ambitious enough to deserve any of the vitriol people read into the story without ever watching the movie. I was entertained but not awestruck.

This movie, which is Real 4K, looks and sounds great in a home theater that has a Dolby Atmos setup. I enjoyed this one way more at home than I did in the theater. I'm not reviewing the story line. The 5 stars are for the format and quality of the movie. When I purchase 4K Ultra HD discs, I only select movies that will utilize the full Dolby Atmos experience. The resolution and colors of this movie are very vivid and look amazing, but the Dolby Atmos soundtrack is my favorite part. The sound during the battle sequences are intense and immersive. There are several scenes where you can hear arrows, fire balls, and creatures above you. My entire room shook from all of the explosions throughout the movie! Also, the sound levels are well balanced throughout, so I didn't need to constantly adjust the volume between action and dialogue scenes.

I went into this having heard all the negative press. I hadn't even seen the trailer. I like Matt Damon, I like Chinese/HK action, fantasy, drama films so I didn't see any reason why it would be bad. It wasn't. Is Matt Damon out of place? Sure. Is Willem Dafoe out of place, sure. I will say it sort of takes you out of the story but that's OK. It's a beautiful film! Watching it on Blu on my 70" Sony with 7.1 THX sound it was an enjoyable film. I will say it was A LOT better then LEGEND OF TARZAN or even KONG SKULL ISLAND. If you are expecting a Matt Damon action film you WILL be disappointed. If you are expecting a great Chinese fantasy film with Matt Damon in it you are in for a treat. The legend of why the wall was built is based on legend. The monsters were as good as the ones in KONG SKULL ISLAND. The colors looked vibrant which is worth noting. I get this movie isn't for all. You have to accept it for what it is NOT what you think it should be. Enjoy the movie as it was made and learn about other cultures film making styles (with U.S. actors - to try and sell it in the U.S.)

I wasn't sure how this movie would work with Matt Damon and some HK stars, so I didn't expect much. I loved this movie! With many Chinese/HK movies, the editing is usually sporadic, like ADD, where it's hard to follow the storyline. With this movie, the editing was well done and the pace of the movie was consistent. I was never bored. It was directed by Zhang Yimou who has also directed many of the movies I like such as House of Flying Daggers, Raise the Red Lantern, etc. His movies are always cinematically spectacular with great emphasis on color, scenery, and music to help with the story. The creature designs were original and impressive, and the CG was even better. The costumes were gorgeous (a cosplayer's dream). The weapons and arsenal were also very creative. Matt Damon's sidekick reminded me of Inigo Montoya--he was funny, but not overly done. Oh, and Andy Lau is in this. Anything he's in, automatically gets 5 stars.

Searching for the secret of gunpowder a group of European mercenaries go to China during the 11th century, but are pursued by bandits, they flee from the treat and hide in a cave but are attacked by a monster, leaving only two of them, William & Tovar are alive, they slash off the monster's arm and decide to bring the arm with them, but while traveling come upon the Great Wall and are taken prisoner by Chinese soldiers called the Nameless Order, led by General Shao. William and Tovar's battle skills earn the respect of General Shao. The mercenary warrior is imprisoned in the Great Wall where he discovers the mystery behind one of the greatest wonders of the world. As marauding beasts attack the massive structure, he joins the huge army of elite soldiers to confront the unimaginable and unstoppable monster. With a massive cast of soldiers and battles, and with panaramic views that overwelm you visually, the storyline comes up short in the end.

The Great Wall isn't so much about the history of how the Great Wall was built (although some historical info was thrown in) but more a movie of beautiful imagery and direction. The colors are so vibrant and the costumes were spectacular. of course the costumes worn in the movie weren't really worn back then in China, but it was still wonderful to see. It's basically a story about a man who had to redeem himself by helping out the Chinese fight off the enemy, who was a mythical monster.. Matt Damon was okay in the movie, but the female general was really the best in my opinion. The special military order called, The Nameless are a group of specially trained warriors without specific skills used to guard the gates of The Great Wall. It's a spectacular martial arts movie with one main plot and a couple of sub plots. Definitely worth watching for some good old martial arts, acrobatic, and warrior fighting!

I really liked this film, the costumes were amazing. The special features stacked to the roof!Ok when I watch films I do so on a 180" movie theater screen with full 7.1 surround sound and the Buttkicker transducer system. This is not to Boast but to give an idea of the clarity that I rate both 4k and 1080p films. 1st off regardless if you are huge into 4k or still collect Blu-ray; I will add that with today's (Oppo) upscaling technology along with upscaling technology on theater projectors that the difference between Blu-ray & 4k is minimal. I will say that going over 180" that you will likely see a difference and recommend 4k for 150"+ screens. I found the film To be fun, enjoyable and the perfect film to drop in my popcorn film section!

This film is a pure popcorn flick, don't expect any high concepts or anything that requires too much thought. There's nothing wrong with that though. Sometimes it's nice to turn off your brain and enjoy some mindless action. The picture, apart from the CGI of the main monster is reference quantity. In 4k the colors and high dynamic range really take the picture to the next level compared to the standard Blu-ray. The Audio is also of reference quality. The surround mix is immersive even on a well setup and calibrated 5.1 home theater system.
