Synopsis

The Host
When a young girl is snatched away from her father by a horrifying giant monster that emerges from the River Han to wreak havoc on Seoul, her entire family sets out to locate the beast and bring their little girl back home to safety in South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's big-budget creature feature. Hee-bong is a man of modest means who runs a snack bar on the banks of the River Han. Along with his slow-witted eldest son, Gang-du; Gang-du's young daughter, Hyun-seo; archery champion daughter Nam-joo; and unemployed, shirker son, Nam-il, Hee-bong has managed to maintain a close relationship with his family despite the hardships that come with being a single father. When a rampaging fiend erupts from the Han and throws the city of Seoul into a state of emergency, Gang-du is heartbroken to see his precious little girl scooped up by the scaly creature and spirited away to an unknown destination. This is one family that always sticks together, though, and as the rest of the city denizens scramble to take cover, Hee-bong, Gang-du, Nam-joo, and Nam-il set out to prove that they're not letting their little girl go without a fight. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Movie: The Host is a fantastic South Korean film which is easy to go into with the wrong expectations. It looks like a horror-monster film, with a creature terrorizing a small city and the people must rise to stop it. Well, that is in the film, but it's much more than that. It focuses on a family and their troubles with each other and the outside world, and in this case the outside world includes a creature born from toxic chemicals poured down the drains at an American army base (don't let that worry you, the movie is not preachy or anti-American). Despite the premise, the film has many comedic moments which translate much better than the humor I've seen in other Asian films and I don't think will be off putting to anyone. The Disc: The blu-ray comes with a fantastic sounding Korean audio track, and it is truly top quality. Both DTS-HD MA and PCM tracks are included. The subtitles are fine and completely readable and understandable. And English dub is present as well, but I recommend skipping it because too much of the film's enjoyment rests in the performances. Even though this is an early blu-ray release, the picture quality holds up very well and is one of the better looking imports I've seen, about on par with other releases by this company like I Saw The Devil. The extras are plentiful enough for anyone wanting to dig deeper into the film, including a great commentary, however there are a few things left off that were on the 2-disc DVD edition. Their exclusion is disappointing. Overall, it's easy to recommend this release, as long as you don't mind subtitles and are open to something a little different.

Saw this in the store last week and had to do a retake. Foreign film with a tentacle on the front..."I've seen enough hentai to know where this is headed!" That little meme popped into my head but after reading the back and a couple reviews of the movie, I figured that for only $5 it was a pretty good buy. Sadly, the first one I got was a defective disc. PS3 and XBOX couldn't read it and it took my PC 5 minutes to play 2 seconds. Had a horrible feeling that they sent the store Region 2 DVDs or something. Took it back and had it exchanged for a new one which played just fine. Basic synopsis for the movie is already posted but there's a bit more to it than that. You can definitely feel the American influence on the film and with it there's a bit of anti-American sentiment. The more you watch Korean/Japanese films, the more you'll notice it. The story was decent but I wouldn't call it amazing. It didn't flow really well in my opinion. The characters were all a wreck which I suppose is what makes them such a dysfunctional family. Was never really sure which part of the movie was supposed to be a comedy, drama, or horror scene. That being said, the movie is definitely rewatchable. I found myself rewinding at points to see if I had missed something in prior scenes. I even went ahead and ordered a copy of the Blu-ray to see it in higher quality. CG was done pretty well throughout the movie, too. Can tell that they had a decent budget to work with. Also, I enjoyed the English voicing and I think I recognized a voice or two from various anime series.

Quite a bit of Extras included in this one including some director/cast commentaries, gag reels, trailers, and more. Watched through about half of them and found them entertaining.

    Not your usual monster movie

The Host is a very unusual monster movie. The monster is awesome. The scene when it first appears is one of the best entrances I have ever seen. However, this movie is really about a dysfunctional family that gets hooked in with the monster. The direction, action, special effects and script are all outstanding. When you watch it you can decide if the monster represents the Iraq War. The movie is from South Korea and you can view it dubbed or subtitled in English (which I think is the way to go). This movie is surprisingly deep and will keep you on the edge of your seat right to the end. This is definitely a five star film and the best monster movie in years.

    Outstanding Monster Movie (and More)

This movie has been defined "Little Miss Sunshine" meets "Godzilla," and it is the best way to describe it: "The Host" is a great, scary, humorous, sweet-and-sour misadventure of a dysfunctional family who go on a quest to find a huge monster that has snatched the little daughter of the protagonist, whom everyone believes is still alive. But there's so much more to it, that you really have to watch the movie to appreciate all of the nuances of this Korean masterpiece. I recommend to watch it with the Korean audio track -- it adds much more to its charm. A real gem, who will surprise everyone who will watch it.

If you enjoy horror movies - you have to see The Host!! This is cheesy horror at it's best!! Seriously, the special effects are AMAZING; the plot is superb for a horror movie; acting is passable, the little girl steals the movie. This is a Korean made movie, so the whole thing is dubbed in English, mostly with hilarious results, but that really adds to the movie's charm and surprisingly doesn't detract from the scariness. I first rented this movie as a joke, but my whole family loved it, and I was thrilled to find it on Blu-ray.

As a fan of sci-fi/fantasy and horror, I tend to ignore most reviews of movies in these genres. The reviewer who wrote the review that appears on the movie must have been payed alot. The plot is bad by karate movie standards, it has no funny moments, and when it tries to deliver a heart felt moment it completely misses. A total waste of time and money.

Definitely not the type of movie we are used to watch, but it is its uniqueness, and it's tone what makes it so enjoyable. The quality of the CGI used in the movie, specially the monster is not great, but oddly enough it adds up with the entire tone of the movie
