    The House of the Devil
A coed struggling to pay her rent ends up taking the wrong part-time job in writer-director Ti West's old-school 1980s-set horror flick, The House of the Devil. Samantha (Jocelin Donahue) is a sweet-natured and retiring young woman, unlike her rambunctious, loud, and self-assured best buddy, Megan (mumblecore stalwart Greta Gerwig). After moving into a new apartment, Samantha is desperate for a way to make a few more bucks. When Mr. Ulman (Tom Noonan) comes on campus looking for a babysitter, Samantha jumps at the opportunity. Once she convinces Megan to give her a ride to the creepy old Ulman house, Samantha learns that the job is not quite what was advertised. Ulman and his wife (Mary Woronov) don't even have a child. He tells Samantha that she just has to stay in the house with his elderly mother-in-law while he and the missus go out to celebrate the lunar eclipse. When she balks at the change of plans, he offers her more money. As the night goes on, it becomes clear that Samantha is a much bigger part of the Ulmans' plans for the evening than she would ever want to be. West established his genre credentials with low-budget cult favorites The Roost (which also starred Noonan) and Trigger Man. The House of the Devil also stars A.J. Bowen and Dee Wallace. The movie had its world premiere in the Midnight section of the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

HORROR: The Way It Was, The Way It Should Be

This was a brilliant throw-back to the way horror used to be (before Hollywood took it over and completely drained the life from it). It had the look and feel of a 1980s movie but the awkward lines and pauses between lines are nowhere to be found. The effects are also pretty good as well. There is not really that much gore but at the brief moments that there is, it’s very detailed. A suspenseful masterpiece that deserves more attention from others. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is a true horror fan. If you see this and thought you were a horror fan but end up not liking it then obviously you were not one to begin with. As far as the actual product, the special features are great but there could have been more. However, considering most DVDs now just have audio commentary it is definitely better than most. The cover art is amazing and you wont regret buying this movie. It truly is a worthy addition to any horror collection. This film has some content that (in my opinion) is not appropriate for children under the age of 15 years.

      Top-notch effort from Ti West

      • My Best Buy® MemberMember

I watched The Innkeepers, another Ti West film, before deciding to check this one out. West does not disappoint. He somehow achieves that creepy, eery feeling that the horror films of old managed to cast on the audience, without an overabundance of gore and torture. I said this in my review of The Innkeepers as well, and it holds true here. If you knew nothing about this film and saw it on TV late at night, you would probably think this movie was made in the early 80s. That's how accurate and spot-on West's portrayal of the time period is. He wrangles up a great group of actors, including some cameos that horror aficionados should appreciate, and the lead actress is phenomenal. The suspense builds and builds, and West prepares you for one heck of a crescendo. I will leave it at that. The best part about this film is its ability to surprise you. The ability to lull an audience into a false sense of security is a bedrock principle in successful horror stories, and this one knocks it out of the park. High recommended, especially at the current $9.99 sale price!

      Quality Retro-Horror Flick!

      • My Best Buy® MemberMember

Fans of 70's/80's horror will appreciate House of the Devil, not because it forces a retro vibe on you a la Rob Zombie, but because it manages to do so without being obvious. You could probably trick the average Hollywood movie goer into thinking this is an older movie. Don't get me wrong, it's not a great movie, but it is very very good. IMO, much better than Ti West's "Innkeepers", which everyone seems to like and I hate. I prefer the look of film, grain and all, as opposed to something that looks like it was shot on a camcorder. HOTD definitely captures that "film" look of the past. Despite the dated look, the Blu-ray looks great. It is light on extras if that's important to you.

      Great slow-burn horror

Been waiting to pull the trigger on this product, and Best Buy finally lowered the price to what I was willing to pay. I really liked this movie, but be aware that it's not for everyone. It's creepy, slow-burn horror where it seems like nothing happens until the last 10 minutes or so. But if you've ever been alone in someone else's house, you know how creepy it can be!

      good throwback horror

This movie is a good warning to those who go around on campus and pick up random flyers thinking they'll make some fast cash. Scary situation. It's one of those old horror movies that makes you scream at the lead actor on the tv: "why are you going in there? look at how freaky/scary that guy looks! are you stupid?!"

      Vintage Horror

      • My Best Buy® MemberMember

House of the Devil is a modern day throwback to the early horror movies of the 70's. The opening credits are incredibly old-school and awesome and set up the movie perfectly. Director Ti West knows the horror genre very well and if you enjoy this film, checkout The Innkeepers.

Still my favorite Ti West film

This is the first Ti West film I saw and I instantly became a fan. It's still my favorite of his too. It's simple but a very well made, very suspenseful throwback horror flick. It looks great and does so much for being so simple.

This film has a lot of style and should be way more enjoyable, sadly nothing really happens until the last 10 mins.
