The Invisible Frame/Cycling the Frame [DVD]

In 1988, director Cynthia Beatt teamed up with then-neophyte Scottish actress Tilda Swinton, on a short documentary entitled Cycling the Frame. Designed as a meditation on the oppression of the Iron Curtain, it found Swinton mounting a bicycle and riding along the outskirts of the Berlin Wall - from Brandenburg Gate to the Berlin suburbs, through fields and neighborhoods and past key buildings. One year later, the Wall toppled. Then, in 2009, after nearly two decades had passed, Beatt and Swinton reunited for a sequel. Entitled Cycling the Frame, in found Swinton remounting her bicycle and retracing the same path now that the wall had fallen - but this time, weaving back and forth through both sides of the former structure. The second film features a series of reflections on such concepts as freedom, memory, and history, delivered by Swinton and intermingled with passages from such writers as Yeats, Stevenson and Akhmetova, and a score by Simon Fisher Turner. This box set contains both documentaries.
