Synopsis

The Jerk
Carl Reiner directs Steve Martin (who co-wrote the script with Carl Gottlieb) in this gag-laden comedy about an idiotic white man, raised by a poor family of black sharecroppers, who doesn't realize he's not black. Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin) is told the horrible truth when he finds himself instinctively tapping his feet to an easy listening tune on the radio, instead of a low-down blues. His mother (Mabel King) tells him he's white and Navin takes to the road (in a World War II bomber helmet and goggles) to start a new life in St. Louis. A filling station owner, Harry Hartounian (Jackie Mason), give Navin his first break, hiring him to pump gas. One day at the station, Navin has a brainstorm, concocting an invention called "The Opti-grab," a combination handle and nose-brace for eyeglasses. But Navin runs into trouble when a crazed killer (M. Emmet Walsh) picks out his name at random from the telephone book and tries to kill him. Navin escapes to a traveling carnival, where he wrangles a job as the "guess-your-weight" man. At the carnival, he discovers his sexual nature, thanks to stunt rider and S&M enthusiast Patty Bernstein (Catlin Adams). But Navin meets the beautiful Marie (Bernadette Peters) and he quickly falls in love. In the meantime, the "Opti-grab" has taken off and soon Navin is a millionaire. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

    Classic Steve Martin comedy

The film debut of the already phenomenally successful stand-up comedian Steve Martin. Co-written by Martin, the film really showcases his talent and natural ease in front of the camera that hinted at what comedy gold was yet to come. Steve Martin as naive rube Navin Johnson, bumbles through life stubbornly optimistic from one (mis)adventure to another. From "finding his purpose in life", to love, to going from rags to riches to rags again, nothing will stop Navin Johnson's optimism. Gust stars include the incredible Bernadette Peters, Jackie Mason and Carl Reiner.

Steve Martin is a master of comedy. I watched this movie two days ago, but it seems like six days ago. The first day seemed like two days. The second day like just a day. The third day like a half day, but the fourth day like one and a half days. The fifth day seemed like two days, and the sixth day like just a day. I have it written down. I can show it to you if you want. If you don't get that reference, then buy this movie! It is the single greatest UNCUT shot I have ever seen in comedy. Amazing.

This movie could not, and certainly would not, be made today. It is a low budget introduction of Steve Martin to the big screen. There is language and situations that honestly I'm surprised haven't had picket lines formed over it. Taken for what it is, just a movie, it's so bad it's hilarious. That is part of the charm, it's just such a weird, uncool movie, that it becomes cool.

I like Steve Martin, but I've never been as big a fan of The Jerk as some are. Even so, the movie definitely has its moments (and gets a 4 out of 5 from me). The plus for this edition is that it's Blu-ray for a really good price and is packaged with DVD and Ultraviolet versions. In addition, the "Best of the Decade" packaging has some nice trivia from the 1970s. The bonus features are limited for this version, but you can't beat it for the sale price.

I happened upon this item in the store after finding it on Amazon for the same price. I already have the dvd, but I'm starting to gather my movies by digital copy. I didn't have the blu ray or the digital copy so we picked up this movie since it included both formats. After opening it, there was no code nor any indication that there ever was one. So, ultimately, I returned it.

I saw this in the theater when it came out, and enjoyed it. Had it in video-VHS/DVD and was hoping the Blu-ray would have improved picture. Actually, for what it is, it is okay, but the Blu-ray mastering exposed how weak the production values were-the carnival scenes must have cost them about 12 bucks. The best part of the show? Bernadette Peters-she was gorgeous in this, and deserved a better movie.

Although certain parts of the movie are a little slow, the fact that the majority of the film is so off-the-wall random and ridiculously funny more than makes up for it. In addition, surprisingly the quality of the blu-ray is top notch for a 70's film. They must have digitally enhanced the heck out of this to make it look so good.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Steve Martin is a comedic genius. This movie was made before political correctness was a big thing, so if you are easily offended, you may not like it and you are probably also not much fun at parties. This is just as good as it was the first time I saw it over 20 years ago.
