Synopsis

The Last Waltz
Martin Scorsese's documentary of the 1976 final performance of the legendary Sixties rock group The Band is at once a show featuring some of the greatest rock performers of their generation and a bittersweet look back at an era that was just beginning to fade. As Scorsese guides the group through interview segments discussing their 15 years together, these relatively young men sound like battle-weary survivors. But The Band were in splendid form for this show, and their multiple guest stars pulled out all the stops, especially Muddy Waters, whose "Mannish Boy" is so powerful it nearly burns a hole in the screen; Van Morrison, with a rousing performance of "Caravan;" and Bob Dylan, whose "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" displays the brilliant cockiness of his barnstorming days with this band. The all-star camera crew and superb stereo sound mix create what is considered to be of the best-looking and sounding rock films ever (as the opening credit says, play this movie loud!), and two studio-shot sequences with Emmylou Harris and The Staple Singers stand on their own. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Yes friends there was a time before swillfests such as American Idol, The Voice, etc, blighted the musical landscape, where we had true MUSICIANS who ACTUALLY had talent and a passion for their craft, played live and well without lipsyncing, and really cared about doing music well...............this is a beautiful testimonial to this truth! I've seen this film several times throughout my life, and each viewing is a treat, from my original copy, to a well worn DVD, to (finally!) a Blu ray, this thing just ROCKS from start to finish. Reads like a Who's Who of great musicians, an absolute must for any fan of timeless music! This Blu is a generation back, as the 40th Anniversary was issued late in 2016, but still very clean sound and video and a bargain to boot...................I highly recommend this disc

I partly checked this movie out due to being a huge Martin Scorcese fan. I was familiar with the song The Weight but that was about it. I have to say after viewing the film I became a big fan of The Band. Audio/Video quality on the blu ray are excellent. Video is not pristine quality due to age and source elements, but a major upgrade over the DVD.

This is a great film, deserving of Blu-ray treatment. However, the original DVD release contained two commentaries, including one with members of the band. It's not on the Blu-ray, presumably because of the content. I'd recommend hardcore fans buy the Blu-ray for the sound and picture quality, but seek out the DVD for the commentary.

Martin Scorsese one of films greatest directors helms this remarkable following of one of the true classic rock bands The Band . Follow The Band on one of their last tours and see the reaction from the crowds as they soak in the moment.
