Synopsis

The Man Who Knew Too Little
Jon Amiel directed this satire on mistaken-identity thrillers and the spy genre, scripted by Robert Farrar, Tim John, and Oliver Butcher from Farrar's unpublished novel, Watch That Man. In the female lead, Joanne Whalley returned to films after a three-year absence, choosing to do so with director Amiel. Farrar's Hitchcockian-style story focuses on naive Blockbuster Video clerk Wallace Ritchie (Bill Murray) who travels from Des Moines, Iowa, to London to celebrate his birthday with his wealthy younger brother, James (Peter Gallagher). When he turns up on the same night that James has plans to attend a high-profile client dinner party (that he hopes will bring him millions from a German investment firm), James needs to keep Wallace away during the evening, so he gives Wallace a ticket to the participatory Theater of Life. The theater game requires Wallace to assume a character and interact with actors portraying people in dramatic situations. At the corner phone booth, the initial call should begin the evening of innocent fun. However, the phone instructions Wallace receives are actually intended for an assassin, part of a scheme to end the current UK regime and revive the Cold War. The real assassin gets the call from the Theater of Life. Blissfully unaware, Wallace walks without fear into a complex web of intrigue involving defense ministers, call girls, and Russian hitmen. For Wallace, all the world's a stage, and he's amazed at the skill of the actors, including beautiful enigmatic Lori (Joanne Whalley) -- while Wallace's pursuers are mystified by their adversary's fearlessness in the face of threats, torture and bullets. Farrar got the idea for this comedy from a chance remark at a party: "The inspiration came from a dinner party, when somebody told me about these strange live theater performances which were all the rage in England in the '80s. The idea was to telephone for instructions if you wanted to take part. My immediate reaction was, 'Wouldn't it be fabulous if somebody got the wrong number, and it all went hopelessly wrong?'" Filming took place in London's East End (Three Mills Studios), at a variety of London locations, and just outside London at the Elstree Film Studios. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

I love his style of comedy! This story is brilliant and fun! Another four classics of his are Ghostbusters, What About Bob? Groundhog Day & Scrooged in my opinion... Buy! you won't be dissatisfied. Read Rovi's Review to see what it is about, my review is based on opinion based on quality of movie and quality of movie... It is double sided however, but that is far better than other copy... DVD-R... This is the original... WB is at it again!

I love Bill Murray and this movie helps prove the why. His character thinks he is in a theatre of life drama not realizing that he is actually involved with people having criminal intent. Bill Murray delivers his usual style of comedy with a plot as funny to me as the movie "What about Bob?". So, if you are a fan of Bill Murray film comedy you will probably enjoy this one.

This movie seems to have a bad rap for some reason and I have no idea why. Bill Murray is hilarious and this film really plays to some of his comic genius. A spy movie about a man who has no idea that he's a spy. Very funny. The state of the disc and packaging was perfect upon arrival, so no problems with a bad shipment. Overall a very good experience.

Bill Murray is very good in this still relatively unknown comedy. Good perfomances by the entire cast and well written dialogue are solid bases for the movie, presented here in both anamorphic widescreen and full-screen, with an informative director's commentary track. Recommended.

This movie is a classic... Why DVD-R it WB? Because the original is also still sold here, it is an example that WB is trying to rip us off with on demand DVD-R... Movie gets 4 stars... Otherwise... Read original version review by me to see what I am saying

I love Bill Murray, so if you are a fan of him you may just love this movie as much as I do. It's not as well known as some of his others but to me it was so good I bought the movie to watch over and over.

I've always liked Bill Murray in this movie. Light-hearted comedy that spoofs The Man Who Knew Too Much. Blu-ray video is much better than the DVD. Recommended.
