Synopsis

The Naturalist
The prolific nonfiction filmmaker and natural rights activist Doug Hawes-Davis (responsible for the critically championed efforts Varmints and Killing Coyote) writes and directs his latest documentary, The Naturalist. A co-effort of The National Endowment for the Arts, The Montana Arts Council, and High Plains Films (Davis' production house), the 32-minute work etches out a biographical sketch of Kent Bonar -- a self-proclaimed naturalist and a walking encyclopedia on orinthology, entymology, botany, and zoology, who inhabits the forest and makes his living "becoming one" with the natural world. Hawes-Davis follows Bonar on a journey through the woods, camera in tow. Through his lens, Hawes-Davis unveils the jaw-dropping depth and breadth of Bonar's factual knowledge and reveals the man's wisdom, as Bonar espouses his philosophies on the essentiality of communion with nature. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
