    Synopsis

    The Neverending Story
Wolfgang Petersen adapted Michael Ende's children's story for this charming fantasy film that spawned several sequels. Bastian (Barret Oliver) is dealing with his mother's recent death. His father (Gerald McRaney) is an imperious sort who continually lambastes Bastian for daydreaming and falling behind in school. On top of his father's badgering, he has to contend with a bunch of school bullies waiting for him in the schoolyard. One day he decides to play hooky and walks into a strange bookstore, where in the attic, he discovers a book called "The Neverending Story". As Bastian reads the book, he's enveloped in the unfolding tale. A sickly child-like empress (Tami Stronach) from a land called Fantasia is concerned about who will take over the land if she dies. She decides it is best for Fantasia if she remains alive, so she dispatches a young warrior named Atreju (Noah Hathaway) to find a cure for the empress's malady. It turns out the land is consumed with a plague called The Nothing, generated by blighted dreams and hopeless fantasies. As Atreju continues onward to search for a cure for The Nothing, he encounters an assortment of strange creatures. Bastian is so consumed with the tale that he finds himself catapulted into the land of Fantasia himself. Atreju realizes that the only way to save the land from its blight is with the help of this strange earth boy, Bastian. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

I first saw the Never Ending Story on HBO when I was young and I loved this movie. I think that I saw this when I was in the 7th or 8th grade (or around the time when HBO first aired this back in the 1980s). I liked the monsters and the creatures in the Never Ending Story and that is because it reminded me of Jim Henson's work. Ever since I was young, I have wanted to work for Jim Henson Studios. Jim Henson's Company did not work on this film though, but the Never Ending Story is still very visually amazing. It's definitely a very wonderful movie to me!

Not really "restored", but still worth a look.

The Neverending Story looks all right, so if you're only here because of the promise of "restored video", this might not be what you hoped for. It's exactly the same picture quality as the old disc, despite the fact a "restoration demonstration" is included in the extras. If you're a fan who has the old disc, the only real added value comes from the extras: a commentary from Wolfgang Peterson, a retrospective documentary, and a vintage documentary. Oh, and the restoration demonstration, prepared for a foreign release. If you don't have a copy, this is the edition to get stateside, but it could look better...

The Never ending story is one of my favorite fantasy movies and I have owned it on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray. I was a bit hesitant to upgrade to the Anniversary edition of the Blu-ray until I saw that it had loads of extras features like a "Making Of". The original Blu-ray has zero bonus features. Nothing. That already made it worth re-buying, but the film transfer has also been cleaned up and looks the best I've ever seen it with no film specs or scratches. If you own the plain version of the Blu-ray, do yourself a favor and upgrade, you'll be glad you did.

'The Neverending Story' is one of those magical fantasy films that just never gets old and is suitable for all ages. Its rich story, strong musical score, and beautiful production design make it a one-of-a-kind timeless masterpiece. Highest recommendation for this film, but don't bother wasting your time watching any of the sequels. This dvd offers both a beautiful anamorphic widescreen transfer and a cropped full-screen version, but not much along the lines of extras other than the original trailer and some brief character bios.

This is a great modern classic fairy tale that is supposed to show children the power of opening a book and letting it take you to fantastic world's beyond the normal world. There are some adult themes in play here, but for the most part it's perfectly safe for older children because of the intensity of some scenes.

There are no words to describe how great this classic from my childhood is. Special effects hold up, the characters are memorable and the message of how powerful imagination is still sends an impact. This edition is packed with bonus features from documentaries, an audio commentary and a one hour special made for German TV is included. Worth getting.

The great thing about this movie is that it can be enjoyed by all ages. Honestly even with the creepier scenes kids will enjoy it and it will be memorable due to the moral of the story. Also the special effects and the characters will make it memorable too. I definitely recommend it for adults too since it'll also make you realize how our childhood can be forgotten.
