The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak [DVD] [1984]

After years of obscurity, Just Jaeckin's R-rated adventure The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik-Yak is released in its American theatrical version to DVD. Newcomers on the block Severin Films deliver the goods with an interview and special extras that help explain the film's troubled history. Much of the backstory can be found in Jaeckin's interview segment of the disc, where he explains both his involvement and some of the cuts that were demanded of him when bringing his original French version of the film to the States. Also included is a steamy LUI magazine photo spread featuring star Tawny Kitaen in the film's sleek costumes in addition to the U.S. and international trailers. Technical specs are impressive on this disc, which includes a 2.0 Dolby Digital track accompanied by a stellar anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen picture. Severin also released the original cut in a separate release as Gwendoline, which reinstates almost 18 minutes of missing footage and adds more features to the disc's weight (including two 5.1 Dolby Digital audio tracks). To be fair, the extra running time actually doesn't heat up the screen as much as it adds to the silly vibe of the picture's first half, though one comparison of the two releases should give the viewer an easy idea on which to go with.

Based on a popular French comic strip, this lavish and erotic adventure fantasy (said to be one of the most expensive films in the history of French cinema) chronicles the exploits of a sexy young girl who escapes from a convent to go looking for the father she has not seen in many years. forget indiana jones

perils of gwendoline was said to one of the most expensive films to ever come from france. hmmm, how about that? the props & sets didn't look to be of a high budget to me but i still enjoyed this film anyway. the creator of emmanuelle & the story of O brought us this cute adventure in the early eighties. rather than picking up where he left off on those two films, jaeckin gives us a film with more of a jake speed or indiana jones atmosphere. tawn kitaen plays a nun who is searching for her missing father in the land of yik yak. she hires a man to lead her & a friend through the wild jungles in hopes of finding the lost father & a butterfly which is said to be extinct. if you were searching for this film, you probably already know the rest or have a basic understanding of the film. gwendoline is campy, cute, & silly all at once but it makes a great film if you are serving nachos with jalapeno velveeta sauce. have fun with this one.
