In this science fiction thriller, a spaceship is transporting a disparate group of people to a far-away galactic outpost called New Mecca. Mechanical failures cause the craft to crash-land on an abandoned planet that has three suns and no night. The only member of the crew to survive is junior pilot Carolyn Fry (Radha Mitchell), while the passengers who climb from the wreckage include a police officer (Cole Hauser) and the prisoner he's transporting, Riddick (Vin Diesel). As Fry and the other survivors survey the abandoned dwellings of the desert world while trying to decide what to do next, one of them is killed by a mutant creature living in an abandoned mining site. The vicious and bloodthirsty mutants, who live underground, have killed all previous inhabitants of the planet; they cannot stand sunlight, but research reveals that the planet has a total eclipse every 22 years, and the latest one is due any moment. Pitch Black was directed by David N. Twohy, who also made the sci-fi cult item, The Arrival.~Mark Deming
David Twohy's first chapter of the Riddick series arrives on 4K courtesy of Arrow Video.
A small but fantastic Sc-Fi film.
Arrow's release is somewhat disappointing, yes you get a brand new 4K master of the film on an UHD, the legacy features + The following NEW special features:
Nightfall: The Making of Pitch Black
Black Box: Jackie's Journey
Black Box: Shazza's Last Stand
Black Box: Bleach Bypassed
Black Box: Cryo-Locked
Black Box: Primal Sounds
What you don't get:
A Blu-ray disc. (Only an UHD disc is included)
I would still recommend this product, and Best Buy had the lowest price in town!!
Arrow's first 4k didn't disappoint. The video is in Dolby Vision and this is the best Pitch Black has ever looked including it's theatrical run 20 yrs ago. This disc has both the rated and unrated editions in 4k. The Audio is only DTS 5.1 Master Audio. A DTS:X mix with been nice, but it does decode nicely to X with a receiver.
The real gem in this collection is the new special features and archival special features. This is Criterion level special features. Included is the anime movie which bridges Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick
I'm a 4k collector and a bit of a SNOB. This was Arrows first 4k releasing and they did amazing! It is a big big big upgrade from its previously released blu ray. Some 4k movies have a small difference from blu ray to 4k and it may not be worth the upgrade. But that is not the case here. The audio mix is the same as blu ray. Wish they would have upgraded that as well. With that said the audio was the forte of its blu ray release. So the audio mix still shakes your system just not that true surround 4k new sound like others are formatting
Where to begin? One thing I will mention AWESOME JOB to bring this movie to 4k HDR!!! This is where the infamous Riddick all started. Overall movie has an interesting plot. Vin Diesel plays an amazing role as a convict with these eyes that let him see things in the dark no one else can see. I recommend anyone who has not seen this to watch it. For those who already have, watch it again in AMAZING 4K HDR it looks so much better. STEELBOOK EDITION BEST BUY!!
first off lets get this out of the way!
to me this IS vin disels best performance of all time! his acting is great. the movie on 4k is dark and gorgeous as its meant to be. i havent seen this movie in years and man the gore on this is nuts.the story is plain and simple, a transportation ship gets destroyed and stranded on an abandoned planet and they have to find refuge or escape before the suns go down. on the night there are dark creatures that feast on the flesh and use sonar as a way to get around
if that doesn't sound interesting to you then i don't know what will.
this movie HAS to be seen on 4k
It's not until repeat viewings that I really came to appreciate this remarkable film. Such a well made and involving piece of cinema for what was suppose to be a low budget B-movie. The Terrain, the unique cinematography makes this film a standout watch.
The 4K transfer is noticeably sharper and the colors are more natural and tight. The audio is even better. I swear it's even louder than the 1080. The low end and the dialogue are all more obvious. Replace your 1080 with this 4K transfer. You won't be disappointed
When I saw this movie years ago I absolutely loved it. There was a little bit of everything. But the main thing I liked is that it had horror movie vibes, but wasn't over the top (compared to the jump scare filled gore feats that are everywhere now). The creepiest part of the movie was the audio. When the light would disappear and the movement and alien noises began was a little freaky, but also exciting. Only a few characters really feel fleshed out, but the obvious draw to this movie is Riddick. It's his movie and everyone else is along for the ride. The 4k transfer looks great and it appears to be a lot more crisp. I would definitely recommend this movie.
Picture quality on this disc is top tier. Every 4K media fan should buy this, and definitely every Riddick fan. This disc is LOADED with special features in fact half of the back cover of the case lists all the special features. Included in the case is a very nice booklet with reviews, director introduction, and character information from the film. My only gripe is the lack of a dolby atmos audio track that would've served this movie well with alien creatures flying around. Definitely buy this and hopefully we get the other two Riddick films on 4K.
