The Private Eyes [DVD] [1980]

  • SKU: 4266699
  • Release Date: 10/10/2000
  • Rating: PG
Wacky comedy doesn't come any broader than The Private Eyes, featuring '80s favorites Don Knotts and Tim Conway as bumbling detectives attempting to find out who killed Lord and Lady Morley. The small distributor Hen's Tooth Entertainment brings The Private Eyes to DVD for fans of this low-budget comedy. The bad news is that The Private Eyes is presented in a very grainy full-frame transfer. The blacks were not always solid, though the colors were usually bright and clear. Certainly a widescreen version is preferred, or even a cleaned-up version of the print. The audio for The Private Eyes is presented in a less than stellar Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono track. No subtitles are included, though the Dolby 2.0 track is clear of any distortion. Extra features include a scratchy full-frame theatrical trailer for The Private Eyes, as well as a commentary track featuring Tim Conway and producer/director Lang Elliott. The track is a lot of fun, including zingers and production information from both men. The Private Eyes is not as up to par as it should be, but it could have been much worse.

    Synopsis

    The Private Eyes
Tim Conway and Don Knotts play two bumbling Scotland Yard investigators out to solve a double murder in this silly send-up of vintage, "old dark house" films. The intrepid Winship (Knotts) and his assistant Tart (Conway) arrive at a Gothic mansion occupied by the grieving heiress Phyllis (Tricia Noble), whose parents have just perished under suspicious circumstances. Meanwhile, a quirky crew of servants ranging from a butler with serious rage issues to a samurai warrior cook and busty maid with a bubbly personality all display likely motives for murder. As a mysterious, black-cloaked killer methodically dispatches with the help, the inept investigators search for clues while being watched by paintings with moving eyes, exploring a frightful a torture chamber, and attempting to communicate with their superiors at Scotland Yard via carrier pigeons who never seem to reach their intended destination. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

We showed this to our kids years ago when they were little (the film was already about 20 years old, I suppose). They loved it! And now that they are in their 20's, they still love it and want it for Christmas on DVD. We've watched it many times on VHS. It's a clean, classic comedy with one of the greatest duo teams of all time. Don Knotts pretty much plays the straight man and Tim Conway is typically hysterical. It's murder mystery filmed at the Biltmore mansion in Ashville, NC. If you've ever visited there, you'll recognize many of the settings. If only today's "comedy" were like this genre, we'd be better off today. Buy it and enjoy it!

What a one of a kind & rare movie. Classic Don Knotts & Tim Conway humor at their best. A must see movie for those who like this duo in what was one of my all time favorites. From begining to end, with the introduction of the staff to the conclussion of the movie where an acual 'wokalar' appears in the back of the vehicle. Who else can make up such a creature other than Tim Conway? If your the type of person who has a dvd night at home, this would be a perfect movie for the entire family!

This movie was one of my favorites growing up. It didn't age incredibly well, but I watch it because I have such a great history with it. I was disappointed when I saw that the DVD version was cropped to 4:3. This Blu Ray version fixed that. You can now enjoy this movie in full 16:9 framing, the way it was meant to be seen.

This takes me back. These two were a classic duo, a-la Hot Lead, Cold Feet, Apple Dumpling Gang, etc. "... And by the way, you're standing in bull ca-ca". Just CLASSIC. Wanna re-live a time when things were simple, including your comedy. When the genius of it was in the delivery timing and facial expressions and not the swear words and CGI? Buy this DVD!

I like the fact that my movie was delivered about a week sooner than expected. This is one of the best films Don Knotts and Tim Conway made. Extremely funny!
