The Prowler [DVD] [1981]

Release Date:09/30/2003
Blue Underground's DVD edition of The Prowler is a good example of how this format can enhance the value of a minor film through a quality presentation and nice supplements. The sharp, anamorphically enhanced video transfer does a nice job of capturing the photography's muted colors and glossy texture. The audio is limited to the original mono mix, but it is a nice, sharp mix that delivers a clean soundtrack. The supplement area is where The Prowler really shines. First up is a nice commentary track featuring writer/director Joseph Zito and effects wizard Tom Savini. Both men have worked together several times since The Prowler so they have developed a jokey, easygoing camaraderie that makes the track a truly enjoyable listen for horror fans. Zito and Savini discuss the film in a breezy, unpretentious fashion that delivers plenty of interesting info about the financial inner workings of the project and how Savini pulled off his spectacularly gruesome makeup effects. They also throw in plenty of fun trivia, the most memorable fact being that the screenwriter's day job was writing dialogue for The Smurfs. The disc also includes a trailer and a comprehensive photo and poster gallery that also throws in plenty of fascinating ad mats. However, the feature that horror fans will love best is a ten-minute collection of home video excerpts depicting the filming of the makeup effects. This bonus gives a fascinating fly-on-the-wall depiction of how the effects were achieved and the difficulties involved in capturing them on film. All in all, Blue Underground's DVD of The Prowler provides a definitive edition of this film that is guaranteed to please the hardcore horror audience.

    The Prowler
In this gory (the special effects are especially well done) slice-n-dicer, the happiness and the sanity of a W.W.II vet is destroyed when he returns home and finds his girl in the arms of another at the town's annual dance. Outraged, he kills both with a pitchfork and the town does not hold the dance again for the next 35 years. The story jumps to the future and the town prepares to hold the dance again. Unfortunately, the vet hears about the dance and comes back to do a little more killing. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
