Synopsis

The Rock
The sophomore film from former music video and commercial director Michael Bay, this fast-paced action yarn featured rapid-fire editing, a cutting-edge rock soundtrack and liberal use of shots awash in a haze of burnished hues, all trademarks of producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. Nicolas Cage stars as Stanley Goodspeed, an FBI chemical weapons expert handed a unique assignment. Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris), an insane Marine Corps general, has taken 81 tourists hostage on the abandoned island prison of Alcatraz. He and his men are threatening to bomb San Francisco with deadly gas unless $100 million is paid in war reparations to the families of servicemen killed in covert operations. Goodspeed is teamed with former British spy John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), the only man ever to escape "The Rock," as well as a Navy SEAL team. When their military escorts are ambushed, it's up to odd couple Goodspeed and Mason to break into Alcatraz and stop Hummel. The Rock was the last film produced by Simpson, who died of a drug overdose before the film's release. Solo, his partner Bruckheimer continued making the sort of glossy, frenetic films for which the duo was famed. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Before Michael Bay became a joke with his almost comedic style over substance films of the last decade or so, he was actually showing signs of being a pretty great action director. Which is why the Rock, for any faults it does have, is on just about anyones short list of greatest action flicks of the 1990's. The blu-ray should also be on anyone's shortlist for how good a 1990's catalogue title can look and sound. Supported with a high-bitrate encode, the film pops with resolution and depth in contrast and black levels. Even more than that, the lossless LPCM surround track will be like taking off tinfoil off your surround sound speakers when compared to the DVD. Definitely worth a pickup, especially since it's often at the right price.

this was a pretty good action movie from explosive master michael bay. and it doesnt feel like nicholas cage is mis-casted in any way. everyone does a good job especially ed harris(even though he plays every bad guy in every movie just about). even for today, the action is still great even if you can see the strings on a stunt man towards the ending. its funny, charming, thrilling, violent, and makes since. it does however fell a little drug out towards the end but i barely had a problem with it. overall, its one of michael bays best.

One of my fav's of all time

This movie is one of my all time fav's. Action all through the movie and drama as well. Crank up your surround sound system and enjoy. Coming across this movie on here is making me want to go home and watch it again. Blu Ray makes everything look crystal clear and better than the theatre. I just with Michael Bay paid closer attention to little details. (ex: how many F18's fly twards the island, windshield of the Ferrari while chasing the hummer) Little stuff but it broke the flow of the movie in my opinion. Worth BUYING for sure.

The Rock is about a group of soldiers who set up on Alcatraz Island and threaten to use a weapon of mass destruction on Fransisco unless the families of a group of fallen soldiers gets paid for their loss. Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage team up for an unlikely duo, a man who spent most of his life in prison without ever being charged with a crime and a government chemist, to prevent any civilian casualties. Even though the ending was extremely predictable, the movie is well worth watching.

Lock 'n load entertainment with lot's of exciting small arms exchange and heart beating suspense! Sean Connery plays a mean role, but an excellent one as usual. The plot was about an average '' action flick '' type, but it had alot of unusual ways to get around it so the good guys could win. The movie itself was one of a kind and really exciting as was the music thruout the whole thing. I would definatly recommend this movie to anybody!

Very entertaining popcorn movie and one of the best Bay-Bruckheimer collaborations. If you are looking for high art, this one isn't for you, but if you are looking to be entertained for an hour and a half, it is. As with all these types of movies you have to suspend disbelief for some of the plot points and some of the obvious problems with physics and geography, but that is easy enough given the fast-paced action.

    Awesome blu-ray title!

If you have blu-ray and like this movie, I definitely recommend you buy it; especially with the sale going on now. I'd even recommend this movie as a blind buy if you're an action movie fan. The picture quality is fantastic for a 10 year old movie, and the uncompressed sound is equally great. The only problem with it is that most of the extras are not in 1080p. Not that big of a deal though.

To say the least it's one of Sean Connery's best performances ever. Along with that Nick Cage is outstanding. Best seen in Blu-ray was a treat. Not all older movies do well in Blu-ray but this one was great. If you're looking for a movie with suspense, thrills like in The Temple of Doom, scraping by by your fingernails and wits, then this is it. I'd recommend it to everyone.
