    Synopsis

    The Sand Pebbles
Steve McQueen received his only Academy Award nomination for his performance in this epic-scale war drama, based on the novel by Richard McKenna. In 1926, as China teeters on the edge of political revolution in the midst of a civil war, the USS San Pablo, is ordered to patrol the Yangtze River to represent and protect American interests. While the San Pablo may be an American ship, much of the labor is actually performed by Chinese locals willing to work for American money, while stern but inexperienced commanding officer Captain Collins (Richard Crenna) frequently drills his charges, unsure what else to do. A machinist's mate with just under a decade of navy service behind him, Jake Holman (Steve McQueen) is assigned to the San Pablo and immediately makes enemies among the crew -- he prefers to do his own work rather than farm it out to others, and the one Chinese man who works by his side, Po Han (Mako), is treated as an apprentice rather than a servant. Holman also falls in love with an idealistic American missionary (Candice Bergen), while his shipmate Frenchy (Richard Attenborough) falls for a Chinese girl and - with marriage plans in mind - kidnaps her to prevent her from being auctioned off. As Holman's methods and attitudes continue to anger his comrades, they find themselves increasingly at odds with the Chinese, especially after Frenchy's girlfriend becomes pregnant and Po Han is captured by revolutionary forces and branded a traitor. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I've always felt that certain actors, no matter how good they are, get lumped into a "unoscar worthy" column simply because of the types of films they're commonly associated with. It's sad, but Steve McQueen was one of these guys. He was an amazing talent that added a whole new level of cool to the silver screen. Yet, somehow he was able to finally convince those people who put him in that column to reconsider and here he finally wins his first and only oscar for best actor. Unfortunately, this BR has a bit too much DNR for the purists. If that doesn't matter to you, grabs this one up while you can.

I first watched the Sand Pebbles at the movies back in 1966 when I wasn't even a teenager yet. I can now better appreciate the great acting performance by Steve McQueen because the movie allows for him to show his wide range in playing the character of Jake Holman. The drama takes place in a turbulent 1926 China aboard a USA gunboat, the USS San Pablo. The story is about how Jake Holman and the crew cope with the changing political climate and what action to take when in many cases there are no "good" choices. The Blu-ray release shows the beautiful cinematography, and includes special features.

Steve McQueen was always considered Mr. Cool, and he doesn't let us down in this movie. Richard Crenna, Richard Attenborough, Candice Bergen and Mako turned in excellent performances. Setting, China during its 1926 revolution. Sailors in the American China Sea service face a clash of cultures as they sail up the Yangtze to rescue American missionaries (Bergen). The movie seems to ask, what is morally right?.

Steve McQueen delivers the performance of his life in this movie. While the movie is very long (over 3 hrs), it does accurately portray what life was like in 1920's revolutionary China. With a terrific cast, this movie should have won the 1966 Oscar for Best Picture over A Man For All Seasons.

Definitely Steve McQueen's best performance of his life. The movie is not light fare, but is so very compelling. Great cast, great acting, very moving. Candice Bergen's first film -- young woman. This is one of my all-time favorite dramas. Picture and sound on blu-ray are excellent.

This is a great movie that I had never known about before. It is a rather long movie, so plan for a full evening of entertainment, but it's a great movie that any Steve McQueen fan should add to his collection.

A great movie that all can enjoy. Steve McQueen did an excellent job and didn't overplay his character. A good cast of actors. A movie without a lot of action is a good chance to enjoy character development.

I have watched this movie more than once and it is great to see what goes on in other countries during the 60's. I really enjoyed the plot and story of this movie.
