    Synopsis

The first season of The Shield almost instantly establishes Detective Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) as "Not Your Typical TV Cop." The leader of the Farmington District Strike Force, Mackey is mean, profane, violent, and some distance removed from honest. And it is not simply that Mackey is willing to beat a confession out of a perpetrator or plant false evidence to get a conviction: Our "hero" and several of his subordinates have strong ties with the Underworld -- and, as vividly demonstrated in the opening episode, Vic is perfectly capable of shooting down a "snitch" in cold blood to keep his peccadilloes from becoming public. Throughout season one, Mackey wages a battle of nerves with his superior officer, Captain Aceveda (Benito Martinez), who regards the detective as nothing more than a hoodlum with a badge and is determined to gather enough evidence to bring Mackey down for good. At the same time, Acevada knows that Mackey is "good copy" for the pro-police press, and he isn't about to ruin his most successful detective's career at the risk of destroying his own political ambitions. Also introduced during The Shield's Emmy-winning inaugural season are Cathy Cahlin Ryan as Vic Mackey's wife, Corrine, and Joel Rosenthal as his austitic son, Matthew; Walton Goggins as Mackey's unpredictably dangerous second-in-command Det. Shane Vendrell; Kenneth Johnson as Det. Curtis "Lemonhead" Lemansky, who never speaks when cracking skulls will do; no-nonsense veteran detective Claudette Wyms (CCH Pounder) and her trepidatious partner Holland "Dutch" Wagenbach (Jay Karnes); Officer Danielle "Danny" Sofer (Catherine Dent), an ally and sometimes "mole" for Captain Aceveda; Sofer's gay partner Officer Julian Lowe (Michael Jace); and long-suffering Assistant Chief Ben Gilroy (John Diehl), whose principal job seems to be to cover Mackey's butt. Season one ends with the Farmington PD under siege from ambush shooters after a riot, forcing Mackey and Aceveda to work together to locate the assailants -- while the fed-up Gilroy schemes to use the situation to rid himself of both men! ~ Hal Erickson

Back in 2001, we had a slew of TV shows featuring anti-heroes. "The Sopranos" had mob-boss Tony Soprano. "24" had Jack Bauer, a Federal agent who didn't even read the rulebook. And "The Shield" has Vic Mackey, who is referred to in the show as "Al Capone with a badge." Mackey and his anti-gang squad known as "The Strike Team" police the streets of LA's Farmington district with an iron fist. And they've gotten away with it so far because Mackey's in tight with the police chief and because they get results. But now criminals are crying police brutality, and Mackey's Strike Force is coming under scrutiny from Farmington's over-zealous, career-minded captain, a detective with a conscience, and a community afraid of the power the police have. This is a very well-written series, with great characters and amazing character arcs. It seldom sags, and features superb performances by Michael Chiklis ("The Commish", and soon "Gotham"), Walton Goggins ("Justified"), CCH Pounder, and season-long "guest" appearances by Glenn Close and Forrest Whittaker. The only drawback is the packaging. It looks like a great, shelf-friendly package, but once you open it, you find the series split up between two very flimsy plastic crush that easily crush. Despite the packaging, do yourself a favor: pick this up for a ridiculously low price, and strap yourself in: you will find yourself mesmerized.

"The Shield" is proclaimed to be one of the best crime dramas on cable TV for a reason. The complexity found with a large number of cast, the writing that manages to be sharp and repugnant at the same time, and the fact that it never wavers on the dark undercurrent behind those who enforce the law. It's a series that can't easily be explained why it's fantastic; with several streaming options providing the entire series, it's worth testing the waters to prove it. I appreciate a more compact packaging of the original complete series set, although it would be much better had they just place the discs in several season-categorized cases instead of stacking the 29 discs in two hubs; scratches will be apparent this way, and it's cumbersome to remove certain discs. The quality of the packaging is my only issue with it, but for less than $50 at BestBuy (and it includes the bonus disc), that's an offshoot.

I recently finished all 7 seasons of The Shield. This series has to be in my top 5 TV series of all time. The show is very character driven. Each one usually has a typical "cop show" subplot, but the broad arcs are about the characters. Make no mistake, this is a very dark show. I would find my moods affected by watching it often times. I like how "real" the characters are. Even the moral centers of the show do bad things and have human failings. In my view a large part of the series is a meditation on morality. Vic Mackey does some horrible things but is also in many ways a good and sometimes even heroic character. It embraces the shades of gray that real people are made up of. It's also very unusual for a series to remain strong over such a long run. That's especially the case when it is a coherent story and not an episodic show like a comedy.

I just purchased all the seasons in a DVD box set and were worth every penny. Few TV shows are able to maintain an excellent level of writing, acting and direction. The Shield did it for all their seasons! New shows come and go but, few live up to a series like this. No cliché lines. No over explaining every thing to you like you're an idiot. No clear good guy / bad guy. Everyone is human. The action is there, the suspense is there, they shoot it as if you are there. Vic Mackey and his strike team are a force for the gangs of Farmington to contend with. But, sometimes the cops find themselves on the wrong side of a gun.

One of the Greatest Shows of All Time

For 7 seasons of one of the greatest television shows of all time, this is a steal for the price. All episodes are in Widescreen even though the first 5 seasons were originally released in a cropped, 4:3 fullscreen format. I have to say the packaging leaves a bit to be desired even if it is attractive. All the discs are spread across 2 disc spindles. However, with the cardboard flaps holding the discs in place, they are much more protective that some complete series sets I've seen that use cardboard sleeves that end up scratching the discs when you pull them out. Could be worse, I guess.

I saw a few episodes of The Shield and decided to purchase it. I am so glad that I did. This is a cutting edge show of good cop and bad cop. This is adult content but it's so cutting edge and I love The Shield. This comes with 29 DVD's and I work over 12 hour days and have already seen 15 of the DVD's. Watching season 5 now. Never knew Glen Close was in season 4 and now Forrest Whittaker is on season 5. Great, amazing, and addicting show.

Finally- the complete 7 season series in its entirety!! This emotionally charged drama will take you on a ride of emotions from episode to episode. It keeps you on the edge of your seat as you watch intensely each character development/change. You will be divided on which side to chose to root for. Must see drama that you wont be able to keep your eyes off. Michael Chiklis gives award winning performance as the good cop turned bad.

the price was right....the packaging and picture quality were good......the series itself.....first 3 years were exciting, they ran out of ideas.....and reworked and streched it out.....oh well....i would recommend to a friend and tell them to only watch the first 3 years worth.....they won't be able to make up the lost time if they watch the whole thing....
