The Sure Thing [Special Edition] [DVD] [1985]

Rob Reiner directed this clever teen-centric comedy, which has been given a solid presentation for this Special Edition DVD release. The Sure Thing has been given two transfers for this disc: a letterboxed version in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which has been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors, and a pan-and-scan version in the full-screen ratio of 1.33:1. The English-language soundtrack appears in its original mix in Dolby Digital Mono, as well as in a version remixed for Dolby Digital 5.1, while this edition also features optional subtitles in English, French, and Spanish. Bonus materials include a commentary track featuring Rob Reiner, three short documentaries on the making of the picture, and an optional trivia track which features fun facts about the movie.

    Synopsis

    The Sure Thing
Director Rob Reiner's The Sure Thing is essentially It Happened One Night for the 1980s, but its lack of surprise in no way impedes its entertainment value. John Cusack plays Walter "Gib" Gibson, a self-involved college freshman who makes plans to head to California, there to touch base (and a few other things) with a "sure thing" played by Nicollette Sheridan. Likewise planning a westward journey is coed Alison Bradbury (Daphne Zuniga), a control freak who has a wealthy, stuffy fiancé over there. Gib and Alison despise one another on sight -- so naturally, they are compelled to travel to California together. The fact that everyone in the audience knows precisely how this one will end up is inconsequential; Cusack and Zuniga deliver such engaging performances that we're pulling for them to wise up and discover one another from the very first scene. One of the best bits: the mismatched couple being bombarded with an ear-piercing rendition of "The Age of Aquarius" by their dippy traveling companions. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

What makes The Sure Thing a good film and worth purchasing is the ability to rewatch many times over. Some great films (Requiem for a Dream is the first that comes to mind) are made superbly and you love them, but you just don't feel like watching them ever again after the first time. I will say that The Sure Thing is not a great movie. You may be dissapointed the first time you watch it, but each time you watch it the quality does not seem to diminish and it does not seem to get old. I own a lot of movies, and though it is nowhere near the best one I own, I have probably watched it the most times. The movie is worth the purchase because every few months you will watch it and be entertained.

I was very enthusiastic upon this viewing this film, thinking it would be good. Well, it wasn't, but the dvd presentation is, and the nice bonus features will most likely be enjoyed and appreciated by those who liked the film.
