    Synopsis

    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
Over ten years after making the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Tobe Hooper returns to his deranged family of reclusive cannibals for another round of chainsaw chases and non-stop screaming. Hooper brings a real budget this time (having recently directed Poltergeist for Steven Spielberg) and the talents of veteran make-up artist Tom Savini. This means he can make things bigger, louder, and gorier than ever before -- and they are. He also brings a wacky, self-deprecating sense of humor, as if deliberately flaunting Texas Chainsaw Massacre's status as one of the first and still greatest "splatter" movies. The result is an impish take-off on the original film (and contemporary horror movies in general) that elevates its own clichés -- buckets of blood and gore, droll dialogue, the screaming female lead -- to the level of high camp. The movie is loosely concerned with a small-town disc jockey named "Stretch" (Caroline Williams, who does most of the screaming) and an embittered Texas Ranger named "Lefty" (Dennis Hopper). They team up and decide to put an end to the murderous activities of the Sawyer family once and for all (that is, of course, until Texas Chainsaw Massacre III). The real highlight of the film is when Stretch and Lefty find their way into the Sawyer family hideout -- a ruinous, winding abattoir underneath an abandoned amusement park -- and engage in a chainsaw-battle-to-the-death with Leatherface (Bill Johnson) and the rest of the clan. Jim Siedow is back from the first film as the acerbic Drayton Sawyer, the family cook and owner of the Last Roundup Rolling Grill. Chop-Top (Bill Moseley) and Leatherface do most of the movie's dirty work. ~ Anthony Reed, Rovi

If you are a serious fan of horror films or you already have the bare-bones DVD version of TCM 2 then you need to buy the Gruesome Edition now. Comparing Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 to the original or the other sequels/remakes is pointless because this film is a beast all its own. It was made to be different than the first and Tobe Hooper lived up to it. It is quite obvious that this film is camp, but thats what makes it so great. The absurdness, the heavy gore(lovingly provided by legend Tom Savini), the rockin' soundtrack, and the action just makes this one of my favorite horror movies ever. The performances are completley memorable. Bill Mosley's Chop-Top character is one of the funniest and most iconic roles ever. Caroline Williams is one heck of a shrieker and plays the part of Stretch to a T. The locations and set pieces really gives this film an epic feel, especially the amazing underground lair of the Sawyer Family. The only horror fans that I can imagine that wouldnt like TCM II are those who like "serious" horror only or purists of the original. This was made for the American horror fan. I mean come on, dueling chainsaw battles between Dennis Hopper and Leatherface? This is the stuff dreams are made of. The original carries the "classic" disturbing value, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 takes the cake as far as entertainment value is concerned.

I was surprised by how good this film was. I consider the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre to be one of the greatest horror films of all-time. I think that filmmakers made a great choice by going with a different (darkly comic) tone to the sequel, and choosing not to just make a retread of the first film in the series. For a film that spends much of its time in a small radio station, the soundtrack is also great. The Blu-ray release presents a very good video and audio presentation, along with a couple hours worth of interesting special features. Like its predecessor, this is a low-budget film, so it will never looking amazing (even on BD). But, I think that this release is probably the best that the film will ever look.

This movie is very funny, and its violence is over-the-top; it's one of the most ridiculous horror movies I've seen that I've enjoyed thoroughly. Leatherface is back in this absurd sequel, and Chop Top and Cook join him to kill innocent victims to make their literal cannibal soup. Dennis Hopper's performance is great and one of his best (along with his roles in "Apocalypse Now" and "Speed"). The DVD's multi-part documentary is great, and the deleted scenes, mostly consisting of the cannibal family's night hunt, are exceptional (their picture quality is bad, but that's forgivable because of the age of the film). Highly recommended.

Making a sequel is a tough thing to do. Do you change the formula or make the sequel much in the same vein as the original? With TCM2, it's obvious that this film and the first are 2 completely different animals. Where TCM was a gritty horror film, TCM2 is a comedy-horror with bizarre characters. This does not make it bad, far from it because as it turns out, it's a great movie to watch! So long as you're not expecting the same type of film as the first. It's also never looked better than it does on this Scream Factory release!

They took a less serious approach with the sequel to TCM. It's basically a horror comedy mixed in with insanity. Dennis Hopper performance alone is worth the admission price of the movie. He plays a sheriff who eventually loses his mind and grabs a pair of chainsaws and goes on a chainsaw cutting spree. They could have made the entire movie based on Dennis Hopper going crazy with a chainsaw and it will be worth seeing. Bill Moseley also gives a great performance as one of the family psychopaths. If you're a fan of the TCM series this is one of the better ones.

Redneck frat boys on the way to the big football game?! Dennis Hopper as a chainsaw-wielding Texas lawman? Cannibalistic chili cook-offs?! So many intriguing premises this movie sets up and then abandons. It ends up competing with its inferior imitators and settles for being a lackluster rehash of the breakthrough original. Sad to see it become just another forgettable Eighties slasher sequel.

This brilliant sequel swaps the original film's gritty realism for vivid, over-the-top horror comedy. Forget about the various other sequels and remakes (and sequels to remakes), all you need are the 1974 original and this 1986 follow-up. The version I purchased has limited-edition alternate cover art.
