    Synopsis

    The Town
Boston bank robber Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) falls for a woman his gang had previously taken hostage after feigning a chance meeting with her to ensure that she can't identify them in Affleck's adaptation of author Chuck Hogan's novel Prince of Thieves. The son of a tough Charlestown, MA thief, Doug passed on his chance to walk the straight and narrow in favor of becoming a career bank robber. Not only is Doug's crew one of the most ruthless in Boston, but they're also one of the best; they never leave a trace of evidence, and always make a clean break. Over the years, Doug's fearless partners in crime have become something of a surrogate family to him; Jem (Jeremy Renner), the most dangerous of the bunch, is the closest thing Doug has ever had to a brother. But a divide begins to open between the two career criminals when Jem takes bank manager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall) hostage during a particularly tense heist, and the group subsequently discovers that she hails from their own tight-knit suburb. When Jem proposes that the gang make an effort to find out just how much Claire recalls about the crime, Doug fears that his volatile partner may do more harm than good and volunteers himself for the job. Later, Doug turns on the charm while pretending to bump into Claire by chance, and becomes convinced that she doesn't suspect him of being the same man who just robbed her bank. As the feds turn up the heat on the gang, Doug finds himself falling for Claire, and searching desperately for a means of cutting his ties to his criminal past. But with each passing day, Jem grows increasingly suspicious of Doug's true motivations. Now caught between two worlds with no chance of turning back, Doug realizes that his only hope for finding a happy future is to betray the only family he's ever known. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A good script, a good cast, lead to a great movie! Ben Affleck proves he knows how to make a movie leaving film lovers glued to the screen. Ben plays a criminal mastermind with a crew that works very well together. Jon Hamm plays an FBI agent who swears to bring him down. When the opening scene of Ben and his crew taking a bank down goes wrong, they take a hostage, an employee from the bank. When they release her they learn she talks to the cops and lives in the vicinity where the crew lives. Fearing she will lead the FBI to them, the crew wants to take her out, but Ben says no. He courts her, dines her, tries to get the feel for what her plans are. Jon Hamm diligently does everything his power allows him to find out who this crew is and bring them down. When Ben tries to get out of town before it's too late, his crew threaten him. He must pull off one last heist before being given his freedom.

This was another of the discounted 4K pickups I came across once I picked up my4K HDR player. I was looking for movies I love and have a tendency to rewatch frequently and The Town is on that list. That being said: this was a release I wasn't fully satisfied with. While the movie itself is still amazing, I was disappointed to see that the HDR version we're given is the Theatrical release and not the Extended Cut. I know the extended cut doesn't add all that much more action, but I just feel that for the money and the experience we all buy the movie for to see it in 4K, I would have preferred that WB give us the extended cut in 4K. I'm not all that surprised since they didn't release Argo or Suicide Squad extended cuts in 4K. The 4K upgrade isn't all that noticeable in terms of picture. There are a couple of color enriched scenes, but the biggest benefit is the audio upgrade.

first off, long movies dont bother me, my fav movie is lord of the rings, and whenever i watch it, i watch all 3 back to back, i make an event out of it. this movie though, was long and didnt have enough story to fill the time. i read the original cut was over 4 hours long. theatrical was cut to about 2:15 and the extended cut comes in at almost 3. it was a good story though, the acting was great, the action was exciting and it kept you on your toes. the blu ray looks magnificent and the aduo sounnds wonderful with surround sound. i most likely wont ever watch the extended cut again just because some of those scenes shouldve been left out, but i will gladly watch the theatrical version.

While 'The Town' doesn't break any new boundaries, it takes a standard formula about a bank robbing crew and executes it perfectly. The action is raw, intense, and very realistic. The acting was good, but Jeremy Renner really shined in his part. Even the dark, moody soundtrack was perfect for building suspense. That said, it could be criticized for having too many parallels to 'Heat', another great film about a heist team with Pacino and DeNiro. Overall, if you're looking for a dramatic action movie that takes itself seriously, this will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Ben Affleck is an incredible two for two as a director. I was captivated by this film and thoroughly enjoyed it. I now understand all the comparisons to the movie “Heat”. It’s an intense film that keeps you on the edge of your seat, even in non action sequences. At times, you often wonder if it’s right to be rooting for Affleck’s character but even that aspect is addressed by a remarkably smart and crisp script. The cast is absolutely perfect and I honestly feel the film itself should receive some Oscar buzz.

Great for "collectors" of Special editions

Not a bad story, not great either. The acting is good from everybody and you can tell Affleck put his whole heart into this work. I'm not a fan of many of the main actors in this cast due to their political or social activism but if you can look past these thespians telling us they know what's best for ya' then you can get lost in the story. The book, mug shots and other stuff are great, especially if you are a weirdo like me that feel like they need to have the best version of whatever. The studios know they can get more money out of fools like me with these "Collector's" edition but this particular package is worth it.

Ben Affleck has surely come a long way over the years. I remember seeing him in Mallrats and thinking, "I like this guy...who the heck is he?!" Some time later he became quite popular and I grew to enjoy his performances even more. I think he shows equal talent as a director, so we really enjoyed this one. It kept us on the edge of our seats with great action scenes, but had more substance than the average shoot 'em up crime story, which is always welcome. Blu-ray quality was great with a nice clean image and no visible defects. I would definitely recommend this!
