Synopsis

Forget those stodgy portraits of England's portly King Henry VIII hanging in museums. This Showtime series introduces viewers to a young, hunky and lustful Henry. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is all dash and panache as the star of the historical soap opera, which bursts at the seams with sex, political intrigue, sex, dangerous court liaisons and sex. In the inaugural season, Henry craves a male heir that Queen Katherine of Aragon (Maria Doyle Kennedy) has been unable to deliver (but his mistress Elizabeth has given birth to an illegitimate son). With his interest in Katherine waning, Henry turns his attentions toward a stunning young beauty named Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer) and makes overtures to her to become his new mistress. Putting aside affairs of the heart to tend to affairs of state and religion, Henry welcomes his wife's nephew Charles V of Spain to court and dutifully tries to hide his lack of affection for his wife. After denouncing Martin Luther and his upstart theology, Pope Clement christens Henry a defender of the faith. With pressure from Anne to get a divorce, Henry sends the devious and opportunistic Cardinal Wolsey (Sam Neill) to Rome to petition His Excellency. Amid all the political, personal and religious goings-on, the stage is set for a monumental showdown between Henry, Rome, Spain and France, and all those involved do their best to keep their heads. ~ Ray Stackhouse

You Think You Know a Story...

Being a Tudor/Renaissance scholar, I am thrilled with this boxed set of Tudors Season 1. Faces to go with names in a book. Voices to go with dialog on a page. The visionary aspects the mind imagines and the soul wishes it could travel back in time to experience. While some characters are amalgams of several people, and others are omitted entirely, and perhaps not every event is portrayed precisely as it occurred, we overlook such discrepancies as irrelevant. The grandeur, the story, the magic of the time...Jonathan Rhys Meyers IS Henry the Eighth. Forever. The acting is natural, the actors comfortable in their roles as a second skin. The settings are fantastic. And, being from Showtime and without the constraints of network censors, this is one of the most realistic portrayals we could ever ask for. It is, in short...perfection.

I purchased the first season of The Tudors at my local Best Buy because King Henry VIII is my favorite English monarch! This show perfectly portrays him and his way of life! I am absolutely in love with this series! The only problem I ran into is that the labels on my DVD cases are totally wrong!! It says that episodes 4-7 are on disc 2 and episodes 8 & 9 are on disc 3 when in fact only episodes 4-6 are on disc 2 and episode 7 is on the 3rd disc with 8 & 9. If you happen to get one of the incorrectly labeled DVDs like I did don't panic like I did! All of the episodes are there! FANTASTIC series!!

I love this series. I have read numerous books about Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Its great to see it in a drama that pretty much follows what actually happens. I dont think they could have picked a better cast. Johnathan Rhys Myers as King Henry is such a awesome pick, not only is he sexy (as Henry was reputed to be when he was younger) but he also becomes the King of England, he makes you feel as if you are there and your heart goes out to Katherine. There is not a single scene that is not played to profection. I cant wait to buy the next seasons set and am waiting for season 3 to air! Dont miss this show.

This show is absolutely stunning. No matter how many times I've watched each episode, it still sucks me in every time. I love history, especially Elizabethan, and was a bit skeptical when I heard Showtime was using Henry 8 as a tv show concept. They have surprised me in more ways than one. Simply put, this show is brilliant. Buy and watch - you won't regret it.

I am not a huge fan on shows that are revolved around this era. It was ok and I am one that no matter what I have to finish a series if I start it. So I did get the second season. Its ok and if this series era seems like one you will go for then chances are you will like it.

I love this show! The story line is amazing. The producers gave it a totally different twist from a movie like The Other Bolyen Girl. Can't wait for the next season to be released! If you like historical movies like Elizabeth and Mongol then this is a good show for you.

The Tudors is an amazing show. I'm a latecomer -- I didn't watch Season 1 when it first aired. Attracted by the TV promos, I watched Season 2 and bought the DVDs for Season 1 to catch up. I will watch this show until Showtime takes it off the air. Its simply the best.

Johnathan Rhys Meyers is a great actor. His emotion while playing Henry VIII is amazing. He truly is convinceing. This show is full of as much drama as a soap opera but pulls it off soo much better.
