Synopsis

Now five years into their partnership, FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) have developed a bond deep enough to contend with the conspiracy they're faced with both inside and outside their professional lives. Unfortunately, between Scully's cancer and Mulder's guilt regarding his role in her condition, any potential romance is shelved while Mulder searches to find a cure, and Scully, while unsuccessful, comes closer than anyone to proving the government's role in hiding their knowledge of extraterrestrial involvement on Earth from the people of the world. In addition to addressing some of the series' very early mythology, the vast alien cover-up continues to build; ultra-clairvoyant Gibson Praise (Jeff Gulka) is introduced, as well as Cassandra Spender (Veronica Cartwright), Agent Jeffrey Spender (Chris Owens), and Mulder's former flame, Diana Fowley (Mimi Rogers). Despite all the doom and gloom, The X-Files: Season Five nonetheless included some lighter fare, including a much-needed retrospective on Mulder's relationship with The Lone Gunmen, a town obsessed with talk-show host Jerry Springer, and a tale of vampirism as told from Mulder and Scully's wildly differing perspectives. ~ Tracie Cooper

The fifth season of the science fiction television series The X-Files commenced airing on the Fox network in the United States on November 2, 1997, concluding on the same channel on May 17, 1998, and contained 20 episodes. The season was the last in Vancouver, Canada; subsequent episodes would be shot in Los Angeles, California. In addition, this was the first season of the show where the course of the story was planned, due to the 1998 The X-Files feature film being filmed before it, but scheduled to be released after it aired. The fifth season of the series focused heavily on FBI federal agents Fox Mulder's (David Duchovny) loss of faith in the existence of extraterrestrials and his partner, Dana Scully's (Gillian Anderson), resurgence of health following her bout with cancer. New characters were also introduced, including agents Jeffrey Spender (Chris Owens) and Diana Fowley (Mimi Rogers) and the psychic Gibson Praise (Jeff Gulka). The finale, "The End", led up to both the 1998 film and the sixth season premiere "The Beginning". Debuting with high viewing figures and ranking as the eleventh most watched television series during the 1997–98 television year in the United States, the season was a success, with figures averaging around 20 million viewers an episode. This made it the year's highest-rated Fox program as well as the highest rated season of The X-Files to air. Critical reception from television critics was generally positive. Remember! THE X-FILES: Fight the Future feature film is set between Seasons 5 and 6!

    Great Mutato = Great Purchase

This season's best episode is "Unusual Suspects," in which we learn the origins of the Lone Gunmen and how they came to know each other. It's a humorous story about paranoia and love. The Great Mutato was also a fun and comic-inspired character. There's even a Christmas episode that's so emotional and critical to Scully's character. Pusher returns from Season Three. This season even includes an episode by Stephen King, involving a killer doll. "Bad Blood" is another fantastic and well-though-out episode about vampires. Both Scully and Mulder have to retell the same story in their own words. It is amusing to see how they really view each other. There are some truly great episodes in this season and I think Agent Spender was a superb addition. There are wonderful twist turning up in Season Five.

In a world of cookie cutter entertainments, The X-Files was largely sui generis and continues to be one of the more distinctive entries in series television of the past couple of decades. Fans are already jonesin' for the reboot, but will at least have this massive new set to keep them knee high (or higher) in conspiracy theory until the new version begins airing in 2016. While some fans are understandably upset about the absence of the original aspect ratios for the first few seasons and/or the kind of weird decision to replace the show's iconic fonts, when taking this release as a whole, The X-Files: season 5 blu comes Highly recommended.

This season is tied with Season 4 as my all time fave! With powerful performances by Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny leading off the season in 'Redux I' and 'Redux II', along with such fan faves as 'Detour', 'The Post-Modern Prometheus', and 'Bad Blood' coupled with mythology episodes like 'The Red & the Black', 'Patient X', and the dramatic finale 'The End', season 5 keeps you on the edge of your seat right into the feature film 'The X-Files: Fight the Future'. A must-see!!

Season 4, 5, and 6 (plus the first movie) were, in my opinion, the golden age of the show. It was at the height of its popularity, and the creative team was really firing on all cylinders. Season 5 is notable for many great episodes, and of course is the precursor to the first film. Highly recommended. Best Buy offering this at 14.99 was a fantastic deal.

Picked up the individual seasons on sale at Best Buy. Being an owner of the DVD version of the series, it's AMAZING the transfer to Blu Ray. Almost felt new watching the series again in the format. If you grew up loving the X-Files, pick up the Blu Ray versions of the season...definitely worth the money!

The GOAT of TV series in my opinion. Sure, like most things it tailed off in the end but that does not take away from the greatness of the first several seasons (this one included). Definite upgrade over the DVDs.

Another great season with plenty of emphasis on "mythology" episodes. Scully's cancer is prominent, Mulder begins to question his belief about the existence of aliens, and the story behind the meeting of Mulder and the Lone Gunman is explained. All in all, a great series continues to get better.
