Tigrero: Mika Kaurismaki - A Film That Was Never Made [DVD] [1994]

Tigrero: A Film That Was Never Made documents director Sam Fuller as he returns with fellow filmmakers Mika Kaurismäki and Jim Jarmusch to a portion of the Amazon where Fuller had once begun work on an action film that was to star the biggest box-office attraction in America in its time, John Wayne. Although that film never happened, this documentary gives Fuller the chance to reminisce about his legendary career. The DVD release of this documentary offers a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.66:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Kaurismäki, extra interview materials edited from the finished film, and some of the footage filmed by Fuller during his initial trip to the Amazon in 1954.

Tigrero: A Film That Was Never Made
The unique film set within a Karaja village in Brazil's Mato Grosso, Jim Jarmusch listens while Sam Fuller describes the 1950's "Tigrero" movie that he was unable to make. It also profiles the Karaja people. The non-film "Tigrero" had a fascinating history. The name was purchased off a novel by 20th Century Fox by Darryl F. Zanuck. Screen writer Fuller was sent to Brazil to come up with the story. There between two jungle rivers, he meets the Karajas who allow him to film their ceremonies and their village. Upon returning, he wrote a blockbuster film which would have starred John Wayne, Tyrone Power, and Ava Gardner. Because it was to be filmed in the dangerous jungle, Fox nixed the project. A lot of this movie focuses on Jarmusch interacting with the natives. The two also discuss Fuller's career and religion. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
