My new go to machine at home
|Posted .I have been pleasantly surprised with this Toshiba Chromebook. This is my first Chromebook. The extra 2 GB of memory and the IPS HD screen on this machine makes all the difference. It handles my typically activities such as email, Facebook, and web browsing with ease and turns on in 5 seconds. This is all I need at home, a machine that is ready to use 5 secs after I open the lid. Extremely pleased with this purchase.

Great product if you manage your expectations
|Posted .Build quality doesn't scream premium and feels plasticity but it is of a nice quality for its price point and has a quality HD screen. Something that's hard to find at this price. Chrome os is simple and fast but is not for everyone. It's a great laptop with nice display for anyone that's looking only to do simple Web based activities and for those that can manage their expectations prior to buying this or any chrome os based machines. Google is making android apps available for select chromebooks and it will be nice addition to limited apps currently available on chrome os.

Perfect for mobile technology
|Posted .Small, lightweight, and love the fact that it has access to Drive. In our work of grassroots nonprofit and organizing this is perfect for the job. I'm able to easy document housing complaints, draft emails, make agendas-basically greater ability to complete tasks on-the-spot. I have more comfort than lugging a laptop around.

Toshiba Chromebook 2 Product Defect
Posted .Three months after buying the computer, I started having display issues with lines appearing on the screen while the computer was still early in its warranty period. (See attached photo - personal info redacted). I had been using my laptop normally, with no physical abuse - the lines appeared after I had closed my laptop, then re-opened it five minutes later. Toshiba refused to honor the warranty, claiming physical damage. I tried to uplevel the issue within Customer Service at Toshiba, maybe even speak to a product manager or someone who works in Quality Control, but the manager I spoke to said I couldn't move the issue beyond him. If you look at the one-star reviews on Amazon, you'll notice several people have had the same issue with the display after a few months. Given the number of similar claims, it seems obvious to me this is a product defect that either Toshiba is not acknowledging - or may not be aware of. All right then, so I'm taking the whistleblower route instead. Beware of the Toshiba Chromebook 2 - it very likely has a product defect.

BEFORE YOU WASTE $350 ....
Posted .I like the Chromebook concept, but Toshiba offers a poorly designed shell for this product. I had this computer LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS before the screen was broken internally, rendering it useless. It wasn't broken from being dropped or from anything falling on it. It broken from normal use. The reason? The shell that houses the screen is not properly engineered. It is not rigid enough to withstand the stress of normal lifting the screen from its closed position so that it can be used. BEFORE YOU BUY THIS PRODUCT, LIFT THE SCREEN AT THE STORE AND NOTICE HOW FLIMSY THE OUTER SHELL IS. IF YOU BUY THIS PRODUCT ANYWAY THINKING TOSHIBA'S WARRANTY WILL COVER THE REPAIR, THINK AGAIN!!! I would have been just as well off if I took the $350 I spent on this computer and thrown the money out the car window. It's a shame, because my only other experience with a Toshiba product was positive .... but, that was years ago. I would have added a third photo, but Best Buy only allows two. If I could upload another photo it would be a photo of the outside of the case to show that there is no external damage as well. Also, I would have given this product zero stars, but I was forced to choose at least one.

Posted .Thank you for the review, WookieUprising, and sorry to hear about the broken screen of your Chromebook 2.
Certainly normal lifting of the Chromebook should never result in breaking it, though it's possible to do damage if excessive force or pressure is applied.
The standard warranty covers all defects in parts & workmanship, but if a technician determines that the laptop is physically damaged then the repair can't be covered by the warranty. Toshiba does offer a SystemGuard warranty extension option to cover accidental damage which would cover such issue if purchased.
Thanks again for the feedback.

Very good laptop for my needs
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendFor anyone on the fence about a ChromeBook, ket me help. If you're looking to buy a ChromeBook, first do yourself a favor and buy a model with at least 4GB of RAM. It'll serve you much, much better in the long run as for performance over any 2GB model, even if they can be cheaper. This particular Toshiba model benefits from a nice 1080P HD screen, so if you like watching YouTube videos or movies on your laptop, you may want to invest in this model to experience a better resoultiopn for all tasks. Cheaper ChromeBooks usually suffer from much weaker screens, but are still workable. Its all based on your preferences and goals for the laptop. Now as for performance, this question is asked a lot or thought of when it comes to using a CrhomeBook and replacing a traditional Windows or Apple computer. I personally have a Microsoft Surface Pro 3, built desktop with 32GB of RAM, Dell Venue Pro 8, laptops, etc etc. use a wide variety of technology and have been very impressed with this Toshiba ChromeBook 2 and would definitely recommend it to anyone. To understand its use and whether it'll fit your lifestyle you must ask yourself whether all your needs are online or if you need to programs available offline. And by offline I mean, not connected to any internet source. If you use things like nine bill paying, social media, YouTube, Plex, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, then this laptop will work perfectly for those tasks. Since I've owned this I've used it to help me throughout the day as the Tech Coordinator for my job, remote deskptop functioning to my home computer, printing and document creation. If you are an avid Microsoft Office users you are still presented with the ability use Office Online and later sync those documents through the cloud for access later on any device. This offers you a lot of flexibility. If you want to keep it simple Google Docs is available offline as well for quick documentation. What you CAN NOT do on this laptop is install any application, as you normally would on Windows. IF you go to a website that runs an installer to installer a program, you be presented with a dialog box stating it being incompatible. One rule of thumb to remember is, if its not available in full firm/function online, its not going to work as an installed program on this laptop. So, no iTunes, Photoshop, etc. Everything else works great and the performance is very, very good.

Best Chromebook to date for the price
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI have been using a Chromebook for over a year. I originally bought a Acer C720 11.6" Chromebook and really loved it. I love that when I want to get on line and browse or write an email its fast. I also own a 17" Toshiba Laptop and a Samsung Note 8 tablet. What is amazing is the fact that I can get on line in less than 7 seconds and I have a full size keyboard. I hate typing on my android phone and my tablet. Recently my grandson who is in High School just bought a 14" HP Chromebook which I loved because of the larger screen size. I decided I wanted to upgrade to a larger screen and did exhaustive research and read reviews. Decided on the Toshiba because of the Bright screen, IPS display and the higher resolution of 1920 X 1080. LOVE IT!!!!!! I actually reset the default screen size and lowered the resolution slightly to 1536 X864 so that the text was easier to read. I am 65 and found this ideal for viewing. Highly recommend this Chromebook. Gave my 11.6" Acer to my son who is in college taking courses and is a better solution for him to carry to classes. Lighter than his 17" Laptop. Chromebooks are perfect for students and I highly recommend the Toshiba Chromebook. I am very tech savvy and love this is my best tech purchase that I have made in several years.
Q: QuestionIs the keyboard lit?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer No, no backlight other than there's a small light built into the power button. These things are all about the battery life and being small/lightweight - so a backlight isn't really part of that.

Q: Questionspeakers/soundHow good is the sound?
Asked by bob.
- A:Answer Sound is okay. I wouldn't say that its anything special. There is no thumping bass or wide sound stage. But its loud enough for watching TV, listening to music in the kitchen. I did a comparison to my MacBook Air and the Toshiba doesn't come close in comparison. In two words - the audio is good enough!

Q: QuestionCan you install and use Microsoft word on this chrome book?
Asked by Bill.
- A:Answer You cannot "install" Office on the Chromebooks (any of them), but you can use the browser version of office 365. Just not the native program. I know a co-worker that use Office 365 on a Chromebook and says it works flawlessly. I personally have not tried.

Q: QuestionItunesI was looking at other laptops, but will this Chromebook allow me to use iTunes? It's seems like a great laptop and I am definitely considering it.
Asked by Aileen.
- A:Answer No, Chromebooks do not support iTunes. It supports almost every other web based music service. Apple still doesn't have a web based interface which is ridiculous. Use Google Music for free.
