good laptop for the money
|Posted .My first impression, the keyboard felt a little cheap, you could feel it was very thin by the pressure of your hand it would have a slight buoyancy. The keys you have to tap them hard for them to respond when typing. I do not recommend this laptop for someone doing a lot of typing. So I rate the keyboard as flimsy as it can get. I was not impressed, I was frustrated with the experience. The screen is bright and clear, with a lot of resolution, it was definitely an upgrade from my last laptop. The screen is very sharp and in detailed. I enjoy watching films and videos. The mouse pointer device is not the best. I had a hard time with getting it to function when I needed it to. I had to restart my computer several times because the mouse would freeze up and not respond. I had to re-install drivers, everything seems to be working fine now but the pointing device buttons feel flimsy when pressed you can actually see the shell of the laptop plastic impress when using the buttons. I feel like I will be using an external mouse later on because I know the pointing device will cause much frustration in the future and may not work properly as well. Startup time- what can I say its almost no wait time which is a good thing. when you turn on the laptop its an immediate start up almost instant to windows. This I have enjoyed very much. Windows 8 was bothersome, confusing and frustrating, I upgraded to windows 10 free, which im still having trouble getting use to. I would much rather have widows 7 or vista. This I know well but the new windows im not sure about yet. Overall, this laptop would be great for a beginner or for someone that does not have a lot of money to invest in a laptop. If you like to type thing a lot then I would NOT recommend this laptop you will be very disappointed. There are things to work around. There are some good and some bad things but my experience has been good. At first I was frustrated at a few things but I have managed to work around them.

Great Laptop
|Posted .My laptop - my work-horse. I purchased this system initially to produce my reports while travelling. However, I have been able to accomplish much more than that. It is easy to use yet sturdy enough to take a beating while taking from one place to another.

Gets the job done with some flaws
|Posted .No, I would not recommend this to a friendFirst, let me say this review is with updates to Windows 10. I updated it as soon as getting it setup, so it never ran Windows 8.1 for any of my use. I've had no major driver issues with Windows 10 except for one minor issue with the touchpad not re-enabling itself when unplugging an external mouse. I purchased this laptop for some general use such as writing some papers and doing a little bit of software development. With the 750GB hard drive it has enough room to load everything and then some. Also, the 17 inch monitor really makes it nice for doing that kind of work. The display is bright enough and has good color. The processor is generally fast enough for booting up and loading various programs. Now, for the not so good stuff. The hard drive is a tad slow. When the virus scanner is running, it pulled down 100% of the drive usage. I'm not a fan of the keyboard either, and am considering getting an external one. The key presses when doing a lot of typing have to be much harder than one would expect. There's no bluetooth on this model either, so make sure you read the specs closely if you were planning on using something external that needed that. Finally, there's one major flaw that is a watchout. The external 'power brick' is much smaller than most other laptops I've ever had. The result is that it runs really hot. There's a sticker on it that says to watch out for it getting hot, but this is so hot that you can't actually touch the thing. I have to use the cords to pick it up or you can risk burning yourself. I called Toshiba and they recommended returning it to Best Buy. So, I did that, and it's still the same with the next one. Overall, poor design on that part, so don't put it near anything that's going to be heat sensitive (including your fingers). As the summary indicates, this laptop gets the job done. It was reasonably priced, and I didn't need the features of the new 2-in-1 machines. The features meet the need.

Great Laptop: Mediocre Support
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI love this laptop! It was relatively inexpensive and has more than enough headroom (e.g., RAM, Processor speed, Hard Drive space, etc.). The only reason I don't rate this laptop Five Stars is due to what I believe is mediocre post-sale support. Somehow within 30-days of making this purchase the PowerCD appl required an Activation Key?!?!... I took the laptop to the Customer Service desk at my local BB and they wanted me to invest an addl $100 for Geek Squad support to get the Activation Key for the PowerCD appl. I considered returning the laptop altogether, but decided that I didn't really need PowerCD. I wound-up downloading VLC Media Player for free off the Internet and this has worked beautifully! I likewise avoided the expensive Microsoft Windows Office Suite by downloading OpenOffice that has given me the equivalent of a free WIN Office Suite. So, all things being considered, I am very happy with the TOSHIBA Satellite Laptop, but feel that BB Customer Service, in light of my problem with the PowerCD Appl. within 30-days of the date of purchase, was far below average (C-)/mediocre at best.

Amazing for the price:
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendThis laptop is fast and able to handle processing to a very good degree (for a laptop and for an AMD A series). I primarily used this laptop for programming, multimedias (swapped out the drive with a bluray drive), and college stuff. When you get this laptop one thing to be aware of is that it will be slow because of 8.1. You MUST must must get rid of the bloatware. Also, it is best to immediately upgrade straight into Windows 10 as 8.1 with my experience has very poor performance. Once I upgraded and got rid of the useless programs/apps this thing starts up from sleep within seconds and also boots up within a few minutes. Performance after that (High Performance setting) is basically flawless. No stutters, freezing, etc. Only con I can think of: The screen is average. Yes, it is 1600x900 @ 720p, but do not expect amazing, vivid color or 1080p display. I repeat, It is average. Blacks are not true blacks. But I expected this when I saw the model and also knowing that this is a $400 laptop. Even so the specs and performance is a worthy investment. This is where I minus one star: the static black/grays. ******If you know you will want a screen with 1080p and true blacks is a must with vivid colors, this is probably not what you want. You will have to spend extra for that commodity on a laptop. But don't get me wrong, this screen is bright and mutch more than able to produce very clear images for streams like Hulu and Netflix. Maybe I'm spoiled by my Nexus 6. Now if you're worried about an 'AMD' processor, please don't be. The A8 6410 is comparable to a 5th Gen i3 or a 4th gen i5. Being that I am a desktop gamer with an intel setup I am very pleased with the performance and speed of this laptop.

Great for price, size
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendGot this for very basic use - email, internet browsing mainly. Wanted a large display screen, which this has. It doesn't seem to run slowly or lag. We did have most preinstalled programs removed, just because they won't be used. Haven't found out how long battery last as we haven't had it for long, plus it's generally on a desk plugged in. It's pretty large if you are going to be carrying it around or traveling, but the large screen size was our main criteria.

So far so good!
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendPurchased this computer as a back-up for ecommerce business. Always have bought HP products but decided to try Toshiba. Price was good and had what I was looking for. Updated to Windows 10 when it became available and that went without a problem. All in all very satisfied with the computer and will consider Toshiba in the future.

Great laptop for light users.
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendThis Toshiba contains a high-end AMD processor. It has a nice display and came with a free game. The only problem is that it is slightly slow to boot due to the low cost of the machine. The laptop runs extraordinary well for how cheap it is and comes with a free upgrade to Windows 10!
