After several months, some notisable problems .
Posted .I purchased this Laptop on 11/10/11, it is now 1/15/12 and i've had several problems that bother me as i try to use the internet. A few days ago the mouse "scroll" up/down feature on the Right side Stopped Working! I hate having to use the Arrow in order to go up or down the pages (websites). One of the Many things i do like about this Laptop is that You Can use storage space from a USB Flash Drive to "Speed up" the computer. The feature is called ReadyBoost (i havent tried it tho..lol). This Laptop is Fast, once you turn on this computer on you can quickly right away Access the Internet, no need to wait for it to load. (To me, that says Alot!) Other problems are with the Windows Media Player Music RIP (saving music to Laptop) is slow many times and if i try Listening to music while Ripping a CD the WMP will stop working properly and most songs will not Save to the computer, i hate that. But trust me, this Laptop is worth it compared to the other "Way Expensive" Laptops that have the same or Less GB Storage. The only reason why i havent taken it to get fixed at Best Buy is cuz i havent had the time but when i do, i'm sure it will work perfectly. :)

OK Within Limits
||Posted .Bought this as the best price vs. capabilities. Biggest drawback over time is the AMD low-end chip, due to high heat and battery life problems. OK computer for a number of applications. We actually bought 2 of them and my wife still uses hers with no problems, although it's starting to get a bit sluggish like mine did. I'd recommend it as a good buy, but you need to have realistic expectations as "You get what you pay for.".

Great price; some nice features; slow processor
Posted .This laptop might or might not be the right laptop for you -- it all depends on what you're looking for in a laptop. All I was looking for was a glorified netbook, and for the price I paid ($269, a week before "Black Friday"), it fits the bill perfectly. It's the first computer of any kind that I've owned that's running Windows 7 (my desktop is running XP Pro, and my old laptop -- don't laugh -- is still running W2K). So for the price, it enabled me to replace my old, obsolete laptop, AND see if I liked Win 7 (some parts I like, some I don't). It's got a decent size hard drive (320GB) and a nice amount of memory (4GB, expandable to 8). The screen is very clear and bright, and the battery performance is fine (5 hours, +/-). (My old laptop gets 1 hour -- totally unacceptable for most anything away from a plug.) Also, the built in wireless is much stronger than the PCMIA card that's in my old laptop. The only way I can really use that laptop in wireless mode is to be sitting close to my router. Also, my old laptop runs VERY HOT; this one does not. I also like the "pebbly" surface -- it cuts down significantly on fingerprints compared to a high gloss surface. Since this is my first experience with a touch pad (My old laptop is an IBM T30 Thinkpad -- not even Lenovo, it's that old -- and has always been set to use that little joystick in the middle of the keyboard, and I've never been able to figure out how to switch it to the touch pad. I inherited the thing and it didn't have any instructions, so I just kept using the joystick until eventually I got very used to it.) I was curious as to how I'd like the touch pad. Personally, I prefer all the options available on the touch pad on the new Toshiba. It's very important, however, to play around with the settings to get the right sensitivity for tapping, dragging, etc. It took a couple of days, but I think I've got it set just right now. There's also a setting sensitivity to adjust so that you don't accidentally engage the touch pad with your wrists while you're typing. And I like it so much, I actually prefer it to the trackball on my desktop. I also like the keyboard -- it's easy to type on it, even though I'm used to a split MS keyboard with my desktop. The keyboard on the Toshiba is much better than the one on the IBM. Once it's up and running, the speed for surfing the net is fine. I really don't have any programs loaded onto it, other than utilities like Spybot, Spyware Blaster, Malwarebytes, etc. It seems to take a long time to run Spybot, and the Win 7 defrag utilities. I loaded PerfectDisk, because I wasn't happy with the Win 7 defrag utility, and that takes a while to run as well. Be aware that this laptop comes with NO DISCS whatsoever, although there is a restore function (which I honestly don't know how it works, since I use Image For Windows to make periodic full system image backups.) I partitioned the hard drive to create a partition for my image backups, and hope that will do the trick. The laptop I purchased from my local Best Buy came pre-setup by Geek Squad, with Webroot subscription A/V pre-installed (the first 6 months is free, but I uninstalled it, and installed a free A/V program instead), all current MS updates, and a set of backup discs to restore the laptop to its original state. (NOTE: You'll get a warning because both Webroot and MS Web Defender are active. You can Google how to totally disable Web Defender if you're interested.) That cost an additional $99 -- which is NOT clear on the sign on the shelf; there's a sticker on the box with 3 places for check marks. The unit I purchased had the most expensive option checked, and it was added on at the register. I did not appreciate that, but figured it was worth it, and since there's an extended holiday return policy, I knew I could just return it if I wasn't satisfied. For the price, I'm satisfied. But your mileage will probably vary. If you do light computing, this could be the perfect laptop for you. If you do anything beyond that, you will probably find this unit under powered for your needs because of the slow processor. Also, as others have pointed out, the sound quality is a bit weak (i.e. the volume seems low even at the highest setting.) And it only has 2 USB ports, vs. 3. Additionally, the power adapter input is on the right side, and the LAN cable port is on the left side, which is somewhat cumbersome, (on the IBM, everything was in the back), although everything works fine. (I have not tried the combo CD/DVD player/burner yet, so I can't comment on that.) Finally (and maybe this is just me), I had a hell of a time figuring out how to OPEN the thing. On my old IBM, the small logo on the lid FACES me when I open it up. On the Toshiba, the name faces AWAY from me, which seems counter intuitive (although from a marketing perspective, I suppose Toshiba wants people to be able to read their name when the laptop is open) So in order to open it up, the name on the top has to face AWAY from you. Obvious once you know it, but until then...it was driving me crazy. I was just about to call Toshiba to find out how to open it up when I realized I had it backward.

Can't beat the price!
Posted .Bought this to replace my mom's aging Turion-based machine that gets painfully hot. What I like: Price (of course!) ~3 hours of battery life with the screen at medium-high brightness and a medium-heavy workload (YouTube videos, software installations, multi-tab web browsing, music playback). Windows estimated nearly 5 hours of battery life sitting idle at the Desktop. Temperatures: this thing barely got warm during the workload mentioned above. The screen: big and bright with decent viewing angles (horizontal is better than vertical) and even (not patchy) backlighting. Competent GPU (capable of 1080p video playback, OpenCL-accelerated Web content [Google Maps]) with regular driver updates from AMD. Quiet exhaust fan. Decent trackpad; handles multi-finger gestures pretty well. Plenty of RAM, especially considering the price: After the video processor takes its cut, you're left with about 3.7GB of memory. Storage: 250GB hard drive is enough to hold onto a decent sized picture and music collection. What I don't like: It's obvious where corners were cut. The chassis is flexible, and the keyboard is a little mushy. Speakers are pretty bad. Only 2 USB ports. No HDMI output (although VGA is included). Weak CPU performance (but a little better than Atom-based netbooks). The textures of the trackpad and palm rest are similar enough that finding the trackpad without looking will take some getting used to; I found myself dragging and tapping away and wondering why nothing was happening, only to find that I wasn't on the trackpad. The screen: there's a huge jump between max brightness and the next step down; colors are a little bluish. 5400 RPM hard drive. Overall, this is a competent machine if all you're after is something for web browsing, word processing and video-watching, although you might want to plug in some external speakers for the videos. It's a bit big, but it won't cook your lap if you choose to put it there.

Fantastic entry-level laptop for the price
Posted .I was in the market for a 15-16" laptop to give to an older relative. My only requirement (other than the basics) was that it have a webcam. Nothing I found could beat the Toshiba C655D-S5300 in terms of value for the money. First things first: format the hard drive and install a clean version of the OS. It's not fair to judge the functionality of this computer based on the bloatware it comes with. Unfortunately since this laptop does not come with a Windows 7 DVD, you will have to obtain the DVD on your own (there are official download links of the ISO file available online for free directly from Microsoft.) The laptop design is quite nice; it has a textured finish that is fairly fingerprint resistant and feels solid to the touch. This is an advantage over the current Dell Inspiron series in my opinion, which has a smooth plastic finish on the palm rest that feels a bit cheap. I don't get that feeling at all from this laptop. Now to be fair, if you're looking for HDMI connectivity, a sleek form factor, or state of the art hardware, this isn't the laptop for you. But if you need a basic laptop for web browsing, video chatting, music and video playback, and office tasks, the Toshiba C655D-S5300 will be perfectly adequate...and for under $270 it's easily one of the best values, if not the best value, available.

Wow! Great laptop from BestBuy
Posted .Please read: I got this laptop on a whim. I saw the price and thought too good to be true. I read the reviews some were iffy...but still did it. It's AMAZING! Now I'm a tech guy and I'll walk you through what I did: 1. Delete the programs you don't need. Easy. 2. Turn off start up programs you don't need. 3. Turn down all the effects on Windows 7 (do you need a shadow under your mouse pointer?) 4. Enjoy a $500 dollar computer for $269. I've tested games on this laptop, right now I'm doing this review, watching the office streaming on nbc.com and downloading a rpg (massive file) game in three different windows, all at the same time. IF someone has left a review about slowness, they must be doing something wrong. The computer feels great, strong build, good keys. Stays cool. Couldn't ask for a better laptop out of a $500 dollar laptop...and this was $269! P.S. I work at a computer repair place and have handled over 200 laptops the past year at least. Old ones, new ones. And this review comes from reviewing those and I sold an Ipad 2 to get this laptop. Just in case someone thinks "He's never seen a good laptop, or some other comment that questions people's judgement." Only comment will be how its 15 inches big and its weight. But that's like comparing a Civic to a Hummer in wall crash tests. Not quite fair to compare. It is what it is.

Q: QuestionWhat kind of set up has to be done in the computer, before being ready to use?Im getting it for my parents and don't want them to struggle with that.
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer I got it for my mom, so I was in the same boat! It's basically ready to use right out of the box (it even comes with Google Chrome preinstalled!) but in order to cut down on the "it's telling me that blah blah blah" calls later on, you might want to do the following: Replace Norton Antivirus with Microsoft Security Essentials. Norton's not bad software, but it's a trial version, and it will be asking for money soon. Security Essentials is free and unobtrusive. Uninstall all of the Toshiba software except FlashCards (on-screen display for the shortcut keys) and Service Station (checks for driver software updates). A lot of the other stuff runs slowly on this PC and/or duplicates functions already built into Windows. Run Windows Update. If you have more time, update the graphics driver (download the auto-detect software from amd.com) and the Adobe Flash player too--that helped high-def YouTube videos play back better, but it isn't essential. Good luck!
