5Better than Expected

A little history about me I had a macbook through college. Loved it, it was a great computer. Then I wanted something more mobile, so I bought a tablet. That wasn't working for me because I enjoy being able to type and it saves me time when I can type. So I bought the Samsung chromebook, I loved that for what it was, it was a great computer (Internet book). Then the screen died and I was looking for something similar to a Chromebook (cheap and mobile). So my replacement was this item the Toshiba Satellite 11.6 2 in 1. I chose this over other chromebooks because I would be able to use Itunes and the other programs Chromebooks don't have. This computer does everything and more for a very low price. I'd say I'm a light computer user, I stream videos (Netflix, Youtube, WatchESPN), email, download music,. I don't do much gaming, but for what I like to do this computer does it all very well. The computer is extremely mobile. It's very light and doesn't take up much space. The touch screen is very responsive and it's actually fun to use as a tablet/touch screen computer. So having the option to type and do things at a fast rate, or just using the computer leisurely with the touch features make it feel like a super tablet. Going from Mac OS to Chrome OS I was wondering how much the learning curve would be to learning Windows 8.1. But it's not hard at all its actually cool to see how they are moving into the app realm and away from the "desktop" style. I've noticed with this computer, the apps actually run a lot smoother than going to website through chrome. It all runs as fast as the Chromebook I was used to. Streaming video is very important to me, so I didn't want something that would be slow making video choppy or of low video quality. But this computer passed all the tests and I can stream any video and it comes in, in HD. The only thing that I struggle with on this computer is the trac-pad is a little touchy. I'm sure it has more to do with me than just the computer. But, I find when using the trac-pad that it doesn't do what I want it to do. But all in all, for the price ($309) it's a great mobile computer.

WHY I WANTED TO LOVE YOU, TOSHIBA SATELLITE: 1. TOUCH SCREEN: WOW! Awesome! So cool! How have we Mac users gone this long without touch screen capabilities on our laptops?? IDK!!!! I LOVED IT! 2. PRICE: I wanted to save money on something portable that I could lose without losing my mind. WHY I DECIDED I COULD NEVER LOVE YOU: 1. TACKY BRIGHT LIGHTS: The LED lights on the front of the computer are BRIGHT. It made for a horrible user experience at night, I googled "ways to turn off toshiba lights," worded a million different ways, read forums and eventually it became clear that that would be impossible. 2. DECREASED RESPONSIVENESS: I've done almost NOTHING on this computer in the WEEK AND A HALF that I've owned it, it is already showing signs of glitching and lack of responsiveness. FREEZING to be exact. Not cool.... 3. THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMELS BACK.... INTERNET SPEED: In the beginning it only bothered me when I made downloads. I was patient. I thought I could find a way to fix it, or optimistically, learn to live with it and operate around it. NO. I PAY FOR HIGH SPEED INTERNET. THERE'S NO REASON A COMPUTER MADE IN 2014 SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN A HIGH SPEED CONNECTION. Go ahead and look up "toshiba satellite internet speed" and the first things that pop up are negative. I know my way around a computer, I've had one since I was 5 but this really was a headache I could not get rid of. I put in a lot of time trying to solve it and it doesn't look like anyone out there was able to find a solution. HOW SLOW WAS IT? KILOBYTES. KB's! DIAL UP WORTHY! It was BAD. NOT LIVABLE. I would only recommend this computer to someone who has a dial-up connection, who is trying to find an inexpensive laptop, and who isn't too concerned about having a reasonably decent-performing laptop. I returned it and purchased a 15 inch HP Model 15-f111dx with a touchscreen and double the memory for $20 more.... The only downside is that the screen doesn't fold back but everything else is AWESOME! Save yourself a headache and get something else.

After buying and returning six (yes, six) other small computer/tablet combo's I was ready to give up until I saw this on Best Buy's website. I gave an old Toshiba Windows 7 to my 84 year old mother last year and it's still going strong, so I knew Toshiba was a brand I could trust.. LOVE Toshiba! The memory and ram equal my full size, much more expensive Acer and the speed is excellent. Setup was ridiculously fast and easy. I have thrown everything at it (figuratively speaking) because I didn't want any surprises down the line like I had with others I had returned.. ie: freezing screen, touchscreen not working, not charging when plugged in, had never seen plugged in not charging before I went through 3 Dell's#, streaming videos sitting and buffering more than they played #I have the fastest cox internet service available so that was not the problem). The one and only downside I can see with this is when you flip it to use as a tablet there's no way to turn off the keyboard so you have to be careful how you hold it. Size, weight, usefulness of all features are incredible. At 11 inches I don't have to use my reading glasses all the time so that's a plus.

1I wish I was lucky or able to get refund
PostedSCCCNThe review show 4.0 & up, but I experienced differently. I have bought this Toshiba laptop for my vacation in the mid of March. First, I love this cute computer with a touching screen even I feel this computer is running quite slow. During my vacation (6 weeks long), I only used the laptop few times for copying pictures there. The computer was kept in the same place without moving or using. However, the screen was not working and I was unable to turn on it before I was heading back home the night before. Primary the screen was showing only partial image & was very washed off to almost just in grey. Screen also descending from top to bottom. Entire image "shifts" downward slowly. When external screen was attached to TV, all images look fine. I am glad that all vacation pictures were able to back up before sending out to repair. The worst was calling customer service. The call center voice seemed very far away. After waiting for few hours and they called back and talked to few people, they agreed to send back the computer for repairing. Unfortunately, there is no repair service in my area. They sent me a link to choose the shipping option. I have to pay $29.99 (I was told that is the best option even this computer comes with 1 year warranty), then wait them to send me a shipping box to ship out for repairing. The entire shipping& repairing period was from May 7 to June 1. Yes, it's long. I have just received my computer back today. Everything is gone, just like a new computer to restart again. Toshiba Service Center attached a product repair receipt states the "the problem: Video display quality problem - Unknown". I hope this is the end problem of this computer.

Thank you for the review, SCCCN, and sorry to hear that your Satellite L15W developed a display problem that required repair.
Hopefully the agent explained to you that the $29 paid for Toshiba to deliver a Toshiba custom shipping box with packing and including the prepaid shipping label. Customers also have the option of using their own packing materials and shipping carrier.
I have every expectation that you'll get many years of reliable service from it now that it's been repaired.
Thanks for the feedback and for choosing Toshiba.

2Several glitches

Let me first say I do not know how many of the issues are directly related to being stuck with windows 8.1 and how many are because this device is just not good quality. The things that bug me the most: unresponsive keys on the keyboard. I oftentimes have to hit a key multiple times before it registers, and also, when trying to type in a box,it can indicate I have clicked in the box but it doesn't type in the box unless I click it again. Speakers: horrible. Sound is really bad and weak. If I'm using the computer speakers I have to have the volume at max.My bluetooth speaker: Most of the time the computer can't find it. When I click on "playback devices" it shows it and the computer speaker, but when I click on the bluetooth speaker, it'll say say it appears to not be plugged in. Yeah. It's BLUETOOTH, and most of the time it IS plugged in. I set it as the default, when it finds it, and when it lets me set it as the default (which is rare) but it won't stay that way. If I reboot the computer it finally finds it. I should not have to do that every time. And it also will say the computer speaker is disabled when it's not. And, opening new pages and links is excruciatingly slow. Oh, and for some time it kept saying on my wireless connection that I had a weak connection. Same wireless, same location. Shouldn't have been weaker. Suddenly it's no longer saying that, but it's still not working well so obviously that was not what was making it slow. Recommend it? Uh, no. I already told a friend to hold off. Since I have to fight with it every time I use it, 2 stars is being generous. It does work. Just not well.

Thank you for the review, KTK514, and sorry to hear that you've had issues with your Satellite L15W.
Regarding the keyboard response time, slight delays can sometimes be caused by an application or service being prioritized by Windows above keyboard inputs. In the worst of cases the system may be consuming too many resources on a runaway process to respond to input in a timely manner. If rebooting resolves the problem then I recommend taking note of which apps are running when the problem occurs to see if there seems to be a pattern of it happening with specific apps or specific combinations of apps.
As for the low volume using the internal speakers, you may want to update or reinstall your Audio driver with the software you can find at support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1200009427 by clicking the "Drivers and Updates" tab and select the "Windows 8.1" and "Sound" & "Wi-Fi" filters.
Use of Bluetooth speakers is fully supported and shouldn't be an issue. I wonder if the verbiage of the error message you mention actually says that the speaker is not "plugged in" or if it might actually say "not connected", a term better suited for Bluetooth speakers that have been paired but are not currently linked. Each Bluetooth speaker model has its own unique method of "pairing" with a Bluetooth supporting device (your Satellite L15W in this case) so check the speaker's documentation for details about how to do this. A Microsoft article at windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/why-isnt-windows-finding-device provides details about Bluetooth use in Windows.
Finally, regarding Wi-Fi issues, I recommend connecting to a different network, such as a Wi-Fi hotspot in a coffee shop. This will clarify whether or not the problem you're experiencing is isolated to a particular router, rather than the computer itself.
For additional help with any of these issues please visit support.toshiba.com or contact Toshiba support at 800-457-7777.
Thanks again for the feedback and for choosing Toshiba.

I wish I'd done a bit more homework on the components of this product before purchasing. It had all the features I wanted (small, touch screen, seemingly adequate memory & decent sized hard drive). The one thing I should have researched more is the Celeron processor. From the day I got this machine, it seemed slow. Figuring this was attributable to Toshiba's bloatware, I started disabling/uninstalling unwanted features and apps based on recommendations found through internet searches. I also installed CC Cleaner, which can breathe new life into even the doggiest of systems. Things improved, but find when the system is used for a while it gets slower and slower. I'm talking keyboard keys not always responding when pressed slow. I'm a stickler for ensuring my systems are always free of adware, trojans, viruses, etc, and after confirming no harmful apps were running and doing pretty much all I can to speed this thing up I've come to the conclusion it's the Celeron processor combined with the Windows 8.1 64 bit operating system causing the performance issues. If the Windows 10 upgrade doesn't help, I may well switch to Ubuntu on this machine. Chalking this up to a learning experience. My next new PC will for sure contain a Pentium processor.

Thank you for the review, NativeTexan, and sorry that you are not fully satisfied with the performance of your Satellite L15W.
Even though this unit is equipped with a Celeron processor, it should be sufficient enough to handle typical consumer day-to-day computing needs. That said, our models with Intel Core processors certainly do deliver significantly greater performance for powering more demanding applications.
Thanks again for the feedback and for choosing Toshiba.

5Compact, fast, overall great laptop!
PostedAaronMember
I bought this laptop for college use. I was in need of something to surf the web, use Microsoft Office, and I also wanted to install iTunes and listen to all of music on it. For what I needed, it fulfills all of my needs and is incredibly small and compact! I love how it weighs less than 3 pounds and can be slipped into my backpack with ease. I do appreciate the fact that it came with various programs pre-installed, such as Office (which just needs a product key to start-up), McCafee, and multiple ways to store files online (such as One Drive). The touch screen is crisp and clear, and the finger track pad is very responsive. If you are looking for a college laptop, or one to use for teen use at home, this laptop is perfect for you. I'm not sure how it would fare being used for more high-speed data use, such as gaming, but so far so good!!!

2Mediocre laptop with a terrible keyboard
PostedReneeMember
I've been wanting a 2 in 1 for a while and did thorough research before buying one. The Toshiba got rave reviews but a few minor things about it irritated me enough to return it. It is a very slow moving laptop. Initially starting the laptop up is very cumbersome and it just seemed to lag when trying to multitask. The most annoying thing about the laptop was the keyboard. I could not get over the keyboard at all, that was my reason for returning it. When you flipped it to tablet mode the keyboard was still active. So when my fingers would hit a key the screen would move around. On top of that, the keys themselves weren't very responsive. I had to really press down hard on a lot of the keys to get them to work. So it affected my typing and made typing a chore. The keys are very small, which is fine, but the tab and enter button threw me off. If you're as picky as I am about the keyboard, I do not recommend this laptop at all. I have a hard time adjusting to new keyboards and no matter how long I spent typing on the Toshiba, I just could not type efficiently.

Thank you for the review, Renee, and sorry to hear that you had a keyboard issue with your Radius.
The keyboard would normally be disabled when in the tablet mode so it seems most likely that you were experiencing a driver problem. We recommend using Windows Update only for "Important" updates and not for "optional" updates, since optional updates often include non-critical device drivers which may not be compatible with unique features. We recommend downloading driver updates only from support.toshiba.com.
Since you also referenced performance, I should also mention that we have more high-powered processor options within our Satellite Radius product line, for those who have power demanding performance needs.
Thanks again for the feedback and for choosing Toshiba.
