Toy Story of Terror! is Pixar’s first TV special, and a really good one. The studio has previously only made feature length and short films before, and a TV special was a new challenge. Pixar has previously been able to tell stories of various lengths, but the half hour of network television gave Toy Story of Terror! a very specific runtime. Toy Story of Terror! had to conform to a runtime of exactly 21 minutes and 30 seconds in length and not one frame longer or shorter. This is just one of the many insightful things learned on the great Toy Story of Terror! DVD and Blu-ray release. The release is packed with special features that show how Toy Story of Terror! was made. There’s more to be done than the average person would expect, and there’s enough in depth material that anyone will learn something. The filmmaking process is undoubtedly different when using animation, and there’s a lot of material that shows just how different it is. Part of this is in an insightful featurette, but a lot of it comes from the various great commentaries included. Also included on the release are deleted scenes, the Toy Story Toons shorts, and vintage toy commercials. The toy commercials focus on a few of the new toys introduced in Toy Story of Terror! and are made in the style of the eras the fictional toys would have come from. Like the one embedded below, these are a highlight of the release and completely hilarious. As for Toy Story of Terror! itself, this is an excellent TV special. The half hour format allowed Pixar to tell a smaller Toy Story tale that is as intimate as the movies. Focusing on Jesse was a great idea, and the way the story is structured around her character works absolutely perfectly. The TV special is an interesting type of story for Pixar to use, and we’re completely excited for Toy Story that Time Forgot. Bonus Features Toy Story Toons shorts (Blu-ray, digital, DVD) • Hawaiian Vacation • Small Fry • Partysaurus Rex Audio commentaries (Blu-ray, digital, DVD) • Toy Story of Terror! • Hawaiian Vacation • Small Fry • Partysaurus Rex Team of Specialists (Blu-ray, digital, DVD) • Director Angus MacLane goes deep behind the scenes to introduce the team of specialists required to make Toy Story of Terror 3 deleted scenes & editor introductions (Blu-ray, digital) • Pencil Topper Trilogy • Travel Brochures • Road Trip Roulette Vintage toy commercials & director introductions (Blu-ray, digital, DVD) • Old Timer • Combat Carl • Transitron D23 Teaser (Blu-ray, digital, DVD)

This fun movie has tons of cool plot twists and suspense. It makes fun of horror movies and horror conventions while also using brilliant story telling, and uses a group of vintage toys as a sort of team of specialists Ala mission impossible. Combat Carl, a name mentioned in Toy Story as their version of GI Joe, makes an appearance as a key character (Although eagle-eyed Pixar Nerds like me will notice the Combat Carl in this is black while the one in Toy Story is White. Obviously, like GI Joes, there are different versions of Combat Carl.) And the commercials included are amazing! I definately recommend watching it first with the commercials. As for the Shorts, it has Hawaiian Vacation, Small Fry, and one I haven't seen before: Partysaurus Rex, which is AWESOME in High Definition (you may want to turn your volume down in some spots. It gets pretty loud!) All in all, a fun time for and Pixar Nut or Toy Story fanatic. The biggest complaint I have is I wish they hadn't put the menu in black and white!!! Because the highlighted stuff is White and the unselected stuff is a whitish gray, it's hard to tell what you're selecting.

Short special originally done for the ABC network but you can see it here with no annoying logos on the screen with a better picture and 7.1 sound. You also have the choice to watch with no commercials at all or with some funny fake commercials put in where the real ones would have been. Though it's done for Halloween and the title implies scariness, it was quite disappointing in that regard. The only 'terror' that happens is the toys are once again in danger of being kidnapped and sold by an obsessive collector. It appears this was animated in 3D, so would have been nice to have had that included on the disc. Some of the included extra shorts were also done in 3D but aren't presented as such here.

It seems that no matter what Pixar does with Toy Story, the result is gold. After three great feature length movies, they have now brought us a made for TV adventure with the whole gang, this time with a horror movie set-up. The jokes are solid and, as always, there is as much for the adults to enjoy as for the kids; funny references to other horror movies and Carl Weathers as Combat Carl! In addition to the main feature, the extras include 3 Pixar shorts that are available individually elsewhere, but it is nice to have them in one place. Each short also features its own commentary track from the filmmakers. There is also a commentary track for the main feature, which is also a nice touch. Blu-ray video and audio is top-notch. This is an all-around nice package.

If you can grab this on sale, it's a great animated short! Since it's not a full-length movie, I wouldn't recommend buying it at full price. However, the short itself is wonderful. It had me laughing a lot and the pacing is really good. One thing you can always count on from Pixar is great animation. Pixar's animation is amazing and fantastic with so much attention to detail. It's great to have on Blu-Ray in high definition. The Blu-Ray also includes 3 previously released Toy Story shorts attached to previous Disney/Pixar Home Video releases as well as a few commentaries and a few featurettes. Definitely recommended for Disney/Pixar and/or Toy Story fans!

If you like the Toy Story movies you will like this. It isn't a full length movie, but for the price and the included 'extras', it is worth the price. The main 'movie', Toy Story of Terror is a good blend of humor, action and a good storyline. While it isn't full length, it does come with three funny 'commercials' for some of the products/toys in the movie that are entertaining and nice 'fillers'. What adds to the value of the Blu-ray/DVD is the inclusion of three Toy Story Toons; "Hawaiian Vacation", “Partysaurus Rex” & "Small Fry". The main movie is only 22 minutes long, but with the extras, your entertainment value gets stretched to about 45 minutes.

Watched this last October when it was on TV, never thought I'd be able to watch anything else ever again with all the times my son wanted to rewatch it. A semi-sequel to TS3, it follows the same characters we know and love while they try to "survive" an overnight stay at a shady motel. Without giving anything away, the big bad feels a little too similar to that of TS2. The focus on Jessie and a nice message about overcoming fear was a nice change of pace. Nice extras, including a few shorts (really short) to give the kiddos a little something more, should they tire from the dozens of viewings of the 23-minute main feature.

Pixar spared no expense when it came to this short feature. Oftentimes when you see a spiritual made for tv sequel like this it is haphazardly done and doesn't capture the look and feel of the film predecessors, but this Toy Story short manages to not have those common pitfalls. Its to bad this couldn't have been an hour long tale, but it kind of makes sense when you think to work and detail that went into something like this with a short turnaround to actually finish it between most Toy Story films and the time that had passed from the third one's release. great extras and a great nugget in the toy Story franchise.
