Tech for Business Travelers

Airports, plane rides and meetings. Packing, unpacking and… repacking. Business travel can be one long headache. But while life on the road might never be glamorous, having the right travel tech at your side can take you from stressed to serene. Let's run down some of the best business travel gadgets to take with you every step of the way.

Streamline Packing

One positive about most business trips is that they're short, so you can pack light. Keeping your business travel luggage to a carry-on-sized suitcase and a personal item that fits under the seat is your first opportunity to preserve some sanity throughout the trip. This way, you'll never be separated from your luggage, and you won't need to worry about whether it made it onto a connecting flight. You'll also avoid getting bogged down with stuff on your way to and from the airport and hotel.

To pull this off, you need to pack with a purpose and employ space-saving options, such as an all-in-one grooming kit that checks off multiple shaving and trimming needs in one slim device. This should leave plenty of room in your carry-on for other personal care items, business attire and any other tech you don't want in your bag under the seat.

Speaking of which, make that personal item the same bag you take to the meeting, conference or convention. Two options to consider: a laptop bag, which offers a stylish, professional vibe you can highlight by removing the strap for a briefcase look; or a laptop backpack, which is sure to hold all your business essentials and might be more comfortable to carry around.

Find Peace on the Plane Ride

The dreaded part of any trip, business or otherwise, is the drudgery and discomfort of air travel, from long lines at security checkpoints to difficult seatmates. Here again, a smart corporate traveler can use tech to get through, settle in and make it out of the airport as painlessly as possible.

Let's start with smartwatches. As you make your way to security, you're not likely to have a free hand to keep checking your phone, much less a tablet or laptop. With a smartwatch, you can check your texts and e-mails, take phone calls, and in some cases, pull up your boarding pass with a turn of the wrist. Plus, if you're determined not to let this trip become a vacation from your fitness goals, you can use built-in tracking apps to stay up to date on health metrics like steps, heart rate and sleep quality.

After making it through security, you'll probably have some down time before departure. This is when your phone, tablet, e-reader or other entertainment device inevitably runs out of battery. Your options now are to buy a $10 magazine you didn't want or desperately search for one of the few power outlets near your gate (which are invariably already in use). Or, you can avoid that struggle and bring your own portable power pack with you to keep your devices topped off. These pocket-sized chargers come in a variety of storage capacities, with some allowing you to charge multiple devices at once.

Once you're on the plane, it's time to either get some work done or relax with a movie or music. Except the person next to you wants to strike up a conversation, or the child a few seats behind is wailing. If you want to quickly escape into your content, time is of the essence, so fiddling with a tangle of wires will not do. Wireless headphones are the respite you're looking for — just turn them on and tune out.

Make a Professional Presentation

When you reach the big meeting or conference, you have a presentation to deliver, clients to impress, and the spotty Wi-Fi at the convention center or hotel just won't cut it. For a reliable connection you can share with your clients and colleagues, bring your own mobile hotspot. Connect several devices at once to share files, loop in others for a conference call, whatever you need to get the job done.

And if you really want to wow your hosts and clients, but you need an extra visual element to add to your presentation, a pico projector can be an invaluable tool. Stream that slideshow or product video right from your phone or laptop and fill up any size room with a stunning visual that sets the stage for you to shine.

Keep Track of Everything

You rocked your presentation. Mission accomplished, right? But you know that expense report is looming when you get home. If you packed a portable scanner for your trip, all those receipts, business cards and meeting notes you've accumulated could already be in the Cloud. Look for a model that includes text recognition software that allows you to organize a contacts list or search keywords from all your documents to make compiling that list of business expenses a breeze.
